Why is there no Martin Luther King movie?

The anniversary of the King assassination was a few days ago, and it reminded me of something I've been wondering for years: why is there (apparently) no major movie about his life? It's certainly an obvious subject for one, but I don't remember a movie like that even being proposed, let alone made.

Any idea why such a movie has not been made, 41 years after his death?

I guess it depends on what you mean by "major". Though it's been years since I saw it, I remember the 70s miniseries King, starring Paul Winfield, as a significant piece of work. (I just looked, and it's available on DVD.)

I also keep meaning to watch the HBO film Boycott, about which I've heard nothing but praise.

If Spike Lee and Oliver Stone collaborated on this, it could be huge.

I prefer Spike Lee. He did a fantastic job with X, splitting the movie into two distinct storylines.

Oliver Stone might show James Earl Ray being paid off by E. Howard Hunt and G. Gordon Liddy.

EDIT I spoke too soon....

Toplin has edited a new book of essays on both Stone and his films entitled Oliver Stone’s USA. In it nine of his films are examined. Also, Toplin has allowed Stone to respond to the critiques in three long sections. The book is well worth reading for both the controversy and some new information it contains. ... Also, Stone reveals here that his proposed film on Martin Luther King was turned down by the studios based in part on the criticism it got in the press when word of the proposal leaked out.
