Please help VERY odd issue we are having with Sammy 750/PS3/Sony820 Receiver

Hello,

I am not even sure if this is where this post should be, since we are not totally sure where the source of the problem is coming from. Please bear with the explanation.

Our HT Setup-
Samsung 52" A750
Sony 720 Receiver
Sony PS3
at&t Uverse

Connected as follows-
Uverse>TV
Optical Out from TV>Receiver
PS3>HDMI>Receiver
Sony820>HDMI>TV

We have had this TV for about 2 weeks now, with no issues stunning pic etc.
We purchased a PS3. Lately while playing MLB08 the TV would shut off, and then on again. (But no off/on sound) More like a reset. This has only happened when using the PS3.

Normally, I would consider the PS3 as the problem 190% However, how can the PS3 be powering off the TV?? I am returning the PS3 tomorrow just to start to eliminate one thing at a time, still we are very worried about the TV.

In addition, when we play the PS3. On the Sony 820 receiver if I recall correctly it always says Linear PCM is this how it should be outputting? All I did when I set up the receiver was to tell it we have a 5.1 system, and then used the included setup mic to set all the parameters.

Does anyone at all have any idea what is happening/we are doing wrong/etc
Please help us to understand and solve this issue.

Thank you in advance very, very much.

I'd like to hear more about the shut off, does it go to black and then back on, or is it more of a flash?

You mention a problem with MLB08, does this not happen with any other game? How about DVDs played through your PS3?

Anyway, here's some guesses (but only guesses). It could be a bad HDMI cable. Or it could be a handshaking problem with either the PS3 or the TV. You might want to try connecting the two via component cable to see if that helps.

This isn't your problem you're talking about, but it isn't right, unless you're getting local HD channels while hooked up to an antenna. That's the only use for the optical out on 99.9% of tvs. It is not to piggy back a connection, even for cable or satellite.

I set it up this way so I could have sound come out of only the TV when wanted, and through the speakers when wanted. I would appreciate the help in setting it up correctly if this is incorrect.

For the main problem I am hoping it is a handshaking issue (I turned off AnyNet on the Sammy) and I want to see if there is something similar on the 820. Still, I feel this PS3 has issues anyway, as it has popped up numerous error codes lately.

Thanks for the help.

Hey, if it works for you, go ahead and use it. You just won't get 5.1 surround from any channels broadcasting it, unless you're using an antenna. If you're on a cable channel that broadcasts in 5.1 (HD channels, Premium movie channels, or some PPV), the tv will down mix it to 2.0, and you'll get pro logic, instead of real DD 5.1 surround.
or
If your A/V receiver does audio and video over HDMI, use HDMI from Uverse box to A/V receiver for 5.1 audio and video. Then an HDMI cable from the HDMI output of the A/V receiver, to the tv.
If it only does video over HDMI, run HDMI cable from Uverse box to tv for video, and digital coax or optical cable from Uverse box to A/V receiver, for audio.

I don't have a ps3, but that's probably because of the setting you have in the ps3's setup menus, for audio output. You have it set to output LPCM or PCM? You may have to set it to Bitstream, for the receiver to say TrueHD or dtsHD. Maybe someone that knows more about the ps3 will chime in and help.
Good luck.
