New to HT... making sure I have the right cables.

Hi. I am new to the site and HT/HDTV in general. I have not owned a TV in years, usually just opting to use a TV tuner in my PC and/or downloading TV shows for viewing on my PC.

I recently decided to dive into the HT thing, so I spent a little time researching online and by talking to some friend with HT systems. I recently ordered the following starter setup:

Sony KDL-40Z4100 40" LCD TV (http://www.docs.sony.com/release/KDL40Z4100.pdf)
Sony HT-SS2300 HTIB (http://www.docs.sony.com/release/HTSS2300_EN.pdf)
Sony BDP-S350 Blu-ray player (http://www.docs.sony.com/release/BDPS350_US.pdf)

I don't have all of the hardware yet, the HTIB and Blu-ray player have arrived, the TV should arrive early next week. I have not yet upgraded my cable service, so at first my TV source will be a coax feed with no box.

I ordered 3 HDMI cables from Bluejeanscable.com thinking I'd need one from the BR player to the HT receiver and another from the HT receiver to the TV. I ordered an extra one just in case the HD cable box/DVR ends up having an HDMI out on it. I figured I had it all covered, assuming the HDMI cables covered video and audio between all components, but then started worrying that I may have over simplified things.

Do I need an optical audio cable to connect the audio OUT from the TV to the A/V receiver? Do you foresee me needing anything else that I'm not yet aware of needing?

Thanks,

JD

No. For one thing, the digital audio output your TV will only work for the sound from its own internal tuner - it will not pass audio from other sources.

The HD cable box/DVR should have an HDMI output. Call the company to verify, or see if you can specifically request one with an HDMI output. (My HD DVR has DVI and component outputs, no HDMI. But I know the new versions of the same model do have HDMI. Since cable companies typically recycle DVRs that are returned by customers who cancell, and refurbish and recycle defective ones, So you can't just assume you'll get one with HDMI even if that's all the Motorola or Scientific Atlanta is making these days.)

At worst cable box should have a DVI output, in which case you'll need a DVI-to-HDMI adapter cable for the video, and an optical or coax digital audio cable for the audio. You HTiB does not have component video in, so that is not an option.

Regards,

Joe

P.S.

Nice initials.
