Well it was Doc Halliday.  But, still...

It's tough to feel good about the last half-dozen games.

Congrats to the Phillies!

the Sox only started 2 regulars.  i guess they're confident enough to turn it on when it matters.

And one of the Sox regulars was Wakefield.  I follow the Sox as much as anyone, and even I had trouble recognizing that lineup.  Then again, Tim really served it up.  Guess it was more of a rehab start for him.

Dusty Brown didn't look too bad in the ninth (I watched highlights on mlb.com).  We could put together quite a bullpen with Brown, Nick Green & Van Every!

I guess it ws the first time the Sox have had three position players pitch in a season...and it was the first time a catcher every pitched for the Sox.

I always wonder what prompted the day that Ted Williams went in to pitch for the Red Sox...  I saw that once in the baseball encyclopedia and have always marveled at what might have led up to that incident.  Maybe some kind of dugout bet between Teddy and his manager?!?  :o)

Eric,

You have no idea how much I want you to be right with this!

I'm assuming the 9 runs in 2 1/3 innings today wasn't in CC's game plan to win the Cy Young...

Normally this would be a throw-away game, but I doubt C.C. thought of it that way.  A very odd outing for him.

Like I said a few posts ago,l me the last time a pitcher went lossless for an entire season.  Even the best occasionally throw a clunker.

It'll be interesting to see how Greinke handles the Twinkies tomorrow.  A good outing there could clinch the Cy Young for him.

I hope the Tigers wrap up their division.  I have this sneaky feeling that the Twins are going to defeat Greinke today, and that Verlander is going to have to come through on Sunday.  The Tigers are really feeling the pressure now.  You should hear the Michigan-area sports radios shows this week -- just about everyone is talking doom and gloom.  I still think Detroit will win their division.
Probably as close as it gets to a playoff game for Greinke. Inside a dome in its final weekend, no less.
As I thought might occur, the Twins have gotten to Greinke. It's currently 4-1, Minnesota, in the top of the seventh inning. Before this series began, I was predicting that the Twins would sweep the Royals, regardless of whom was on the mound for the Royals.  What I still don’t know is whether the Twins or the Tigers would be a more formidable opponent for the Yankees.  Another thought I am now having is that the Tigers will lose tonight -- but I really hope that that does not happen.

On another note, I was really happy to see that Manny came through for us last night, whiffing four times against the Rockies.  I hope he keeps up his current batting prowess throughout the playoffs, but he probably won't. ;)

Well, the Twins win, and the Tigers lose -- again.  Now, Verlander may still come up with a gem of a start, and it may not matter if the Twins win their last game of the regular season.  We could be looking at a playoff game in Minnesota.

And that playoff game has to be on Tuesday rather than Monday...because the Vikings play the Packers in Minnesota on MNF!  Crazy world we live in.

Then the ALDS will begin on Wednesday!

Do you realize the Twins & Tigers are tied at 85-76...and that the Tampa Bay Rays are just one game worse than them at 84-77 (and the Rays are 18 games back in the AL East)?!?

The Rangers are 87-73.  The Mariners are 83-77.

Mike,

Ahh yes, the American League Beast. I've been following where the Red Sox would be this year had they been in any other division. It's quite interesting how consistently good the Yankees have been thus far this year.
With the way the Tigers have been hitting, scoring only 1 run in this series, I don't think it will matter who is on the mound for them. I watched part of that game last night, and the Tigers just can't get anything going offensively, getting out in the worst possible way.

I guess I should not be surprised that the final regular season game at the Metrodome won't be aired on either ESPN or TBS, since there is even less talk about it than that of Shea Stadium's final season.

The Twins and Tigers both lead in their respective games...  What fun!

Scott:  What happened to your font size?  It's kinda hard to read.

Too bad I'll miss the 1-playoff game since I'm at work that night.
wouldn't it be hilarious if Pavano ends up pitching against the Yanks in post season? :)

WOW.  epic game tonight.  congrats to the Twins.

Yes, that was a great game, and I'm not even a normal baseball watcher

It's games like that which prove baseball to be the greatest game of all time.

Wow.

That was a HELL of a baseball game.  Very awesome.  Go Phillies!

Mike,

From my end, my font size is easy to read -- it's about 12-point.

W
hat a fun game last night.  As Walter said above, however, the Tigers just can't score runs, even when they have numerous opportunities with less than two outs.  They are lacking in basic offensive fundamentals, and much of this lack lies with their manager and coaches.  Not being able to push runners from second to third, bunting a runner over, etc.  I remember the days when the Red Sox would be fined and then thrown into jail if they even thought about bunting, much less stealing a base.  Thankfully, that mindset has changed over the years in Boston.

This game had great plays, bad decisions, great pitching, superb defense, and ... not so good defense.  It was really a lot of fun to watch.

Walter,

The game was aired on TBS. Do you mean it wasn't shown on TBS in your area?

Who here gives the Twins any chance against the Yankees?

I was referring to the last scheduled regular season game, which was against the Royals. The 1-playoff game would have been shown in my area.

I give the Twins to at least push the Yankees to 5 games, since they have the momentum (kind of like '07 Rockies).

Walter,

Okay, I see.

I'd like for the Twins to steal game one, lose game two, and then win both games at the Metrodome. :)

Oh nothing would make my day more than to see the Yanks get eliminated.
But I just don't see it happening.

With the start of the playoffs only an half hour away, I'll go ahead and make my predictions:

Phillies over Rockies in 4
Cardinals over Dodgers in 4

Yankees over Twins in 5
Angels over Red Sox in 5.

Phillies over Cardinals in 7
Angels over Yankees in 6.

Phils over Halos in 6.

I admit my bias, and looking back at my picks at the beginning of the season, I got only 2 out the 8 correct.

FOX is hoping for Yankees-Cardinals, especially since the announcers used to work for those teams.

Complete game by Cliff Lee.  Phils up 1-0 over the Rockies.

I'm hoping for Red Sox vs. Dodgers myself.

I'm kinda afraid to go back and look at my pre-season predictions.

Not completely awful.  I've got half the teams in the playoffs anyway...

Red Sox over Dodgers in the World Series!

I guess that Mets pick didn't really work out for me.

i'm surprised Fox isn't hoping for Yankees/Dodgers.

anyways, i think the Twins/Tigers game will be remember for years to come.  i just love it when, in extra innings, a team goes ahead and then the other teams ties it up again :)  i wonder how often that happens :P  as for the Twins chances, ANYTHING can happen in baseball.  especially in just a 5 game series.

I'd have to think Fox would prefer Yankees/Dodgers, too.  "Show me the money!"
