Same here. As I say every year, I still think the All-Star Game in baseball is the only one worth watching. The ones in other sports are almost as laughable as an all-star version of a reality show. And it remains an honor to be in one, unlike football, where it seems like half of the players selected end up backing out.

Also, I like the fact that it's held every year, and in MLB venues only.

Hearing the starting lineups announced, somehow takes me back to the days of collecting baseball cards. I used to thought the All-Star version of the cards would be worth more than the regular ones.

I think the starting line-ups might just be my favorite part of the event.

love the game too.  and the HR derby is WAAAY too long.  the thing should be 90 min tops.  but whatever.  if i had to change the actual game, i'd say leave the starting lineup in for at least the first 6 innings.  i don't like seeing replacements starting to trickle in after 4.  and i'd like to see the starting pitcher pitch more than 2 innings.  while alot of people hate the "1 per city" rule, i dislike the "everyone has to play" unspoken rule even more.  leave the best players out there.

You're joking, right? How could the American League possibly win the game if Bay, Beckett, Papelbon, Pedroia (assuming he were able to play), Wakefield, and Youkilis were the only players to play for the American League? I think that's asking a bit much, even for them.

Mike,

Do you love the All-Star game enough to wish that the league would go back to two All-Star games per year?

can't wait to see Doc vs. Pujols :)

that would be as ridiculous as expanding the "best picture" Oscar to 10 nominations.  HEY WAIT A MINUTE -- !

The HR derby goes on WAY too long.    And, I don't think it's just because of the sparkling interplay between Berman & Morgan.

And I never saw such bogus technology in my life as that ball tracking device which provided a colored trail of the flight of the ball--yellow to begin with and then green "when we know it's going to be a home run."  And then they use it on replays of homeruns?!?!?!  D'oh!  The flight of the ball is still hard enough to follow that we don't need gimmicks gunking up the works even more.  If EPSN weere to really start using this crap during games...

And then there was that little on-screen counter to let us know how far the ball traveled.  My son, who's attending an engineering school quickly explained to me how there's no way such a device could possibly work as they must be basing their estimates on hang time and couldn't possibly be factoring in the trajectory of the ball itself.  Prince Fielder hit that one ball pretty darn far...but I'm having a hard time believing that the estimate of 503 feet was anywhere near accurate.

I think one All-Star Game a season is enough, Scott.

I used to watch the home run derby, but nowadays, I just catch the Sports Center wrap-up of the event.

One all-star game is one too many for any sport!

(Mark dodges the barrage of stuff thrown at him)

I caught the final round of the derby, and was like "oh no" when seeing the trail of the home run ball.

And I won't be surprised if FOX starts using it. After all, they were the ones with the glowing puck when they had the NHL in the 90's.

Also caught a couple innings of the celebrity softball game, which aired after the derby. Kind of fun to watch, seeing some of the old Cardinals (like the Wizard and Lee Smith), along with seeing some pathetic play from some of the celebrities. I was hoping to see Bobby Knight would go off on someone.

I too enjoyed the celebrity softball game.  Goose Gossage -- at the plate?  And how about Rollie Fingers?  Now he really looks as though he belongs singing in a barber shop quartet. :)

I didn't see this, but my son told me that at one point--during live action--the ball left the bat, the yellow trail showed up and turned green (signaling a "for sure" HR) and the ball landed 10 - 20 feet in front of the fence.

I thought it was funny they had some girl gymnast doing back flips down the base paths, etc. with Ozzie Smith on the field during the celeb. softball game.

Him along with that Backstreet Boy (whatever his name is). ;)

A nice game for Nelly, a great catch and a home run.

My man Mariano wins it for the American League tonight, 4-3!  Way to go my man! ;)

How about that catch by Crawford?  That's just the way he and Papelbon planned it before game time. :)
the last few All-Star games have been pretty good.  if the Yanks don't make it to post season, i wouldn't have a team to root for so the AL in the All-Star game would be the next best thing :)

during Justin Upton's at-bat, the camera inexplicably switched to a closeup of an expressionless bald guy in the stands.  who was that?!?

Um, Scott.  It was a guy named Papelbon that won the game for the AL tonight, Mo just saved it.

I've got no freakin' clue.  But I asked the same question at my house.

Fox used WAY too many reaction shots during the late innings of tonight's game.  And how did Mariano's kids get in the dugout?  I thought that was verboten.  They were in street clothes!

My son was shocked that the President wore a White Sox jacket to throw out the first pitch last night.  I was surprised to hear him say he couldn't possibly ever root for the Cubs.

I was even more surprised to see him wear jeans and sneakers for the ceremonial first pitch.

Fox must not have known there was going to be a first pitch since they completely botched the coverage of it with their on-field crew.

Nah. Papelbon tried really hard to give it away. It was CC from my Rays that won the game with his catch.
I was pleased that the game concluded when it did.  After last year's 15-inning affair, I couldn't handle another late-night (or early morning) game....

Paps been saving/winning games like this all year.  He's been lights out for so long, he now wants get back some of the excitement we we're missing from the "closer by committe" days.

For goodness' sake, yes.

C'mon.  Two pitches = two outs!  What more do you people want from him?!?

How's about asking to be traded and then going  to the worst team in the NL? That'd work for me.

Who threw out the first pitch before presidents?

Maybe we could start a new myth that John Hancock threw out the first pitch at the 1776 World Series.

Ah yes, I remember it well.  The Redcoats versus the Rabble.  Scrappy guys those Rabble.  They eked out a victory against all odds.

Didn't see anything like it again until the 2004 ALCS.

Coolidge looks like he'd rather be home in bed or something. LOL

Do you have any photos to post? Or maybe the some screengrabs from the Sports Illustrated championship DVD set?

Taft looks like he had a hard time even getting the ball onto the field.
