Re: 2009 MLB Thread

I was just coming into this thread to report what I read on this. How sad. I watched Adenhart pitch for the first time a couple of nights ago during the Angles / Athletics game. When I read the news today, the first thing I thought of was Buddy Holley (1936-1959) -- both he and Adenhart (1986-2009) were twenty-two when their lives were cut short. My prayers are with the Adenhart family at this time.

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

It is just so sad. I was watching last night thinking that he was pitching really well and was glad when relief pitchers came in as I am a die hard A's fan. When the A's came back and ended up winning I went to bed happy.

I get to work this morning and it is the first thing my boss tells me. It is just so weird and sad how quickly someone can go.

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

I'm biased, because in Jr. High, a classmate and his entire family were killed by a drunk driver.. on their way to the hospital to deliver a new baby into their family, everyone in the car was killed. The father was on the way to the hospital in a seperate car, as he left straight from his work to meet them there.

It was one of those things that just really hit me. Later, in high school a few students killed another by having him fall off of a truck while they were drunk, driving around back roads.

I've never been a drinker, and drunk driving is one of those crimes that really burns me. The person who caused the accident was already suspended on a prior drunk driving conviction. He was drunk when the accident happened last night. And, rather then stay for the cops, he saw the carnage and fled on foot.

Now, 3 people are dead, with a fourth critical. I'm going to be the arse here, but I'm hoping that more then reckless endangerment or manslaughter, he is prosecuted under a 2nd degree murder charge, and use of a weapon.. the weapon, of course, his car while he's drunk. It's happened elsewhere. Does it make him an example? Sure. And, if he had stayed at the scene and turned himself in, I might say 5-10 and counseling. But screw it, the guy fled the scene of the crime and tried to run away. Throw the book at him.

Matt,

I agree with you 100%. I am just glad they caught the f**ker.

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

Just an update.. the murderer has been charged with 3 counts of murder. He blew a .21 on the breathalyzer based on reports about 3 hours after the accident, which puts his level at the time of the accident likely above .24... three times the legal limit. But what probably helped cook his goose were: (a) giving a bogus address (b) running from the scene of the accident (c) prior conviction for drunk driving (d) no license because of the previous (e) violation of previous DUI agreement, apparently.

DA's may be lenient, but make them look like idiots for giving you leniency, then run or.. you know, kill a car full of people.. expect to get the book thrown at you.

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

I was pleased finally to see the BoSox win a regular-season game against the Angels yesterday. Penny looked good in spots, and Papelbon -- after looking a bit shaky -- got his second save. I think his fast ball was riding a bit high; at least it looked that way on the highlights.

The rubber game is today. Beckett, who looked very impressive on opening day (which was actually the next day, due to the game being rained out), is on the mound for Boston.

And in today's score, it's Seals 3, Pirates 0.

I must be slow. I checked and thought "what is he talking about?" My ah-ha moment came a moment later. Those Seals are a formidable club.

The organization backing the Seals has been fielding World Series champs for centuries now.

Those Seals are one tough unit.

In a different incarnation, but on-topic, Joe Dimaggio played for the San Francisco Seals before heading to the Yankees.

Seals field was torn down when I was a toddler. The only "Joltin' Joe" left in SF is found at local coffee houses.

first 2 game win streak for the Phils.

Indeed. A rough week for baseball.

On The Sports Reporters yesterday, Mitch Albom suggested that a first offense for DUI should result in automatic jail time. Can't say as I disagree.

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

Unbelievable. Mark Fidrych has passed away, apparently from an accident involving him working on his truck. I hope there are those on this Board who remember him from the mid-1970s. His antics and his eccentricities/idiosyncracies were legendary.

Count me as among those who remember his antics well.

So short a career...but such an impact on our generation of baseball fans. What a personality.

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

How the hell did the Royals manage to hold onto a talent like Grienke? I've watched this kid pitch several times, and when he is one, he's like watching a young Greg Maddux. It's not fireball and tons of strikeouts, but his pitch sequence is mesmerizing... to go from a fastball to this goofy 54MPH pitch that you wonder how it gets across the plate. It's rare you see a player swing and it seems like forever before the ball crosses the plate.

Fun time at the k today.

This is very sad news. I have very fond memories of Mark Fidrych, having grown up in SE Michigan during his time here. I'll never forget our family's trip to Florida in the 1977. We stayed with the Tigers at the Holiday Inn in Lakeland, and Mark's motel room was just below ours. I have a picture somewhere of him waving to us as he entered his room. We were driving back to Michigan when we heard on the radio that he had injured his knee shagging balls in the outfield. It was the beginning of the injuries that ended his too brief career.

I still have an autographed baseball from that spring training visit that has many Tigers on it, including Mark Fidrych.

He died way too young. RIP, Bird.

Mike F. and Scott,

Hey, thanks for the pics / memories. I am a BoSox fan since way back when, and Fidrych was a very engaging personality to this 'non-Tiger' fan. He was a lot of fun to watch on the mound. In retrospect, I now wish I had paid more attention than I did when he was pitching.

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

Here's a pitching memory from last night.

Nick Swisher pitches the bottom of the 8th in last night's Rays/Yankees blowout. Swisher had been in the game at first base before he moved to the mound.

Video is okay, audio sucks but is understandable. Announcers are Michael Kay, David Cone & John Flaherty.

I always enjoy when odd things like this happen.

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

They mentioned on ESPN this morning that Swisher was the best pitcher the Stanks had last night. (Maybe the Red Sox should've been trying to sign him instead of Texiera!)

In first place on April 14:

KC, Toronto, Seattle in AL

Florida, San Diego & St. Louis in NL

Anyone wanna change their predictions?!?

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

And the AL East is truly backwards at this point.

But it's only April, and the Orioles always get off to a good start, before coming back to earth (more like buried into the earth).

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

Okay...now I'm ticked off.

MLB has just suspended Josh Beckett six games for throwing high & tight to Bobby Abreu in the Sox/Angels series this weekend.

He wasn't even thrown out of the game!

Three different Angels were (including Mike Scoscia).

Put aside the fact that I'm due @ Fenway Saturday (Beckett's next scheduled start)...but that's crazy! He'll probaly appeal (and pitch Saturday)...but if you saw the play the umpire granted Abreu time just as Beckett was beginning his wind-up. I'm not even sure why the Angels were so apoplectic about the incident.

Sorry about your tickets, but I'm happy a Red Sox has finally received some punishment.
