Jason Werth, a straight steal of Home.

They just showed Jamie Kennedy and Jen Love Hewitt sitting on the stands watching the Phils

Yeah, and that's only one third of the story. He stole second, third, and then home! I saw the steals on ESPN an hour or so ago. I watched the catcher throw the ball back to the pitcher and wham! He (Worth) was there before you knew it.

Scott that's right. amazing.
I'm sure it's happened plenty of times but I remember in 1979 or 1980
pete rose did this while with the Phillies, and at the time as a kid I never heard of such a feat.

So...I dutifully head over to ESPN's "Live" morning SportsCenter just now to check out highlights and stumble onto Top Ten Plays. That's cool...except somehow a straight steal of home didn't make the cut!

There were some nice fielding plays, etc. But, c'mon! A guy steals 2nd, 3rd and then HOME...but doesn't make the top ten plays of the day?!? Crazy.

Guess I'll have to wait for the game highlights to roll around. Hope they think the play is worth the cut in the context of game highlights.

I didn't know that Pete Rose did it, but I must say that that doesn't surprise me.

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

A good comeback win for the BoSox against the Angels last night. They were trailing 3-1 in the top of the eighth inning, and scored two to tie, and one in the ninth to win it. Ortiz was HBP with the bases loaded -- ouch (probably more for the Angels than Papi).

BTW, is anyone getting excited about Zimmerman's run? I know I am. Just think -- if this continues for another 6-10 games or so, we'll be getting cut-ins to the Nationals games to see this. I am looking forward to it. But the media will be all over this very, very soon. Right now, they're somewhat tepid. But if he extends it to near forty games, watch out.

Doc Halliday handed it to 'em last night...and gave a little schoolin' to his old teammate AJ Burnett. He's kinda old school. Complete game five-hit (5-1 score) win in just two hours-twenty-two minutes. Nice!

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

I may need some help here. What does a die-hard BoSox fan do when the Yankees are playing a series against the first-place team in the Red Sox's division (Toronto Blue Jays)? Does one root for a tie?

Mike, here's a video highlight:
Baseball Video Highlights & Clips | LAD@PHI: Werth steals four bases in the game - Video | phillies.com: Multimedia

The above link came from a news article page and someone made a super funny comment: "Are the Dodgers gonna blame that on Manny?" LMAO!

Nice try Mike, but they DO currently suck . Their age and infirmities are once again starting to bite them.

That was the one saving grace about that game, it was quick. As are most well pitched games (or at least half well pitched). Goes to show you that games take longer than they used to because of crappy pitching. Throw strike one and the game speeds up.

Once again, the Yanks' management has managed to show how out of touch they are. Can't afford seats at the new place, well how about a sweet deal on some slightly used ones ? New York Yankees - Featured Listings

As a Northeastern alum, do what I do whenever BC and BU square off in hockey . . . root for an earthquake that brings the stadium down.

Hey, that's some good advice. Thanks.

Seriously, I don't root for the Yankees very often -- it has to be an extraordinary circumstance, like when they're not playing. Now, if they were about thirty games behind with twenty-nine to go, and they were playing the Blue Jays, and we needed Toronto to lose so that Boston could make the playoffs, another exception would kick in at that moment.

Yeah, in that case I'd root for the Yankees. Or I'd root for a purpose pitch that breaks A-Rod's wrist, setting off a bench clearing brawl that causes Toronto to forfeit. That's a perfect outcome, IMHO.

Then again, I once told a Yankee fan on the 'T' that I wished Thurman Munson had owned a bigger plane so he could have taken that whole team of lowlifes for a ride. Nettles, Rivers, Munson, Jackson . . . the current Yankees are relatively tolerable compared to that crew (and Jeter's a downright saint).

This early in the season? I can handle Toronto in first place a lot easier than rooting for the Source of All Baseball Evil.

The old Red Sox motto: "Anyone in first except the Yankees".

And ever since last year, I'm adding Tampa Bay to the list - although, I'd much prefer them to the Yankees because I don't have to hear from the Tampa Bay fans throughout the course of my day (and especially on Facebook).

That was something! I like the way he timed it on the catcher's soft throw to the mound...along with the fact there was a righty batter standing in the batter's box. Batteries are going to have to take notice whenever there's a guy at third. Worth made it look a heckuva lot easier than Ellsbury.

BTW, you guys are killin' me!

Torre's not managing the Yanks any more. There probably not a high risk of a tie game any more.

Jeff,

You really said that to someone? I'm surprised you weren't confronted -- or were you? I don't like the team, but I don't wish that kind of thing on any of them, past or present.

why sawx fans have become the new yankee fans.
that's really sad Jeff.
being from philly I despise several teams like the Cowboys, the Celtics
the Rangers in hockey but I would never say they should die.

also that doesn't have a place in this topic were everything is lighthearted and all in good fun.

Yep. This was prior to 2004, and the guy was obnoxiously touting all the championships and how much he loved seeing the Yankees of the 70's beat up on the Sox, etc., etc. After I said that, he said "Wow, I'd heard about Sox fans like you, but I thought it was just a myth."

Remember, I got to watch Nettles and Rivers grab Bill Lee's arm and yank it back out of the socket. Fisk and Munson were mortal enemies. Those teams truly hated each other and wished each other harm, not to mention they inflicted harm on each other. Me, I was only going along for the ride.

As far as being confronted, he was a Yankee fan on the 'T', what the hell was he going to do? Besides, back in the late 80's two buddies and I dropped our pants to reveal Red Sox, Bruins and Celtics boxer shorts during the 7th inning stretch at Yankee stadium. Being afraid of confrontation was never my strong point.

Hey, Lew B (and anyone else interested in Yankee ticket prices)!

Check this out!

And for anyone who wants to know what Manny is up to...

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

I have a question: Why did they build a new stadium again? Was the old one that bad or were they just looking for a makeover?

With the insane ticket prices, it seems like building a new stadium was the only way they could charge such riddiculous prices to afford their payroll.

It sucks that the die hard fans (that were responsible for most of the teams profit in the first place) are being pushed out the door.

and p.s. Mike, you're not supposed to post a response without saying something about the Sox. Man, Wake got himself into a mess of trouble last night. That's too bad.

C'mon, Tony. Jeff was really not wishing death on the Yankees. That's just an example of good-old Northeastern sick humor. Like "Red Auerbach walks inot a bar. The bartender says 'Hey Red" would you like a nice cold draft?' and Red says 'No thanks, I already had one.'" Even fans of the teams indulge in it. I still find it lighthearted.

Let's go Red Sox!

Quite appropriate as I have read that the area between the 'Legends' seats and the rest of the ballpark is being referred to by some as 'the moat'.
