Re: 2009 MLB Thread

but the announcers make up for it.

I was away from my TV when it happened and had to come RUNNING back in the room when I heard John Miller's voice freaking out. LOL

Ibanez has quickly made the fans forget about Pat burrell.

I'd much rather have a guy who can hit .270 and be consistent
for nearly an entire season then a guy who will
hit .390 for april and May then .195 most of the rest of the season.

the main concern i have is he is another lefty in the the lineup and
they continue to not really have any real bat for hitting behind Howard.

It was time to move on.

I have to come in to note that signing of Ibanez looks great even just 18 games in.
So far this SEASON
runs -18
hits - 25
tb's - 50
homers - 6
rbi - 16
avr. - .342
on base av. - .402
slugging - .685
ops - 1.087

Burrell

runs - 6
hits - 15
tb's - 20
homers - 1
rbi - 8
avr - .238
ob% - .364
slugging - ..317
ops - .681

He doesn't have speed but he's a great base runner, first to third
better then Burrell ever could have been
also Ibanez has been terrific in the field.
he gets to balls Burrell couldn't get to when he first came up.
Plus, 2 game winning home runs already.

This doesn't look like a silly move so far.

Sorry to break up the Yankees/Red Sox thing but

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

Speaking as a Phillies fan..... We remember Pat fondly since he helped win a World Series.... He'll be a hero in Philly forever. But we don't miss him. I was really jazzed when I learned that the Phillies had picked up IbaƱez to replace Burrell. Last night's game was like the all-star game Home Run Derby.

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

I was at that game last night, which was just unbelievable, although a bit difficult to enjoy after stuffing myself with hot dogs.

Farthest thing from the truth. He NEVER looked over. Ellsbury said he made the decision to go--on his own--after he saw Pettitte completely ignored him on the prior pitch.

A quote from Pettitte:

Quote:
"That one was a little different in that I was in the stretch and Aaron (Hill of the Blue Jays last year) took off. This one was my fault. Jorge [Posada] told me right before the pitch was thrown, 'Hey look over there' and I just didn't do it," said Pettitte. "I wanted to concentrate on the hitter with the bases loaded and I just blew it. I knew he was fast but something like that you realize how fast. I won't take that for granted anymore, I'll tell you that."

Girardi sounded pretty pissed that Pettitte let it happen.

Quote:
It was a huge play and an embarrassing one for the Yankees who stood in disbelief.

"[Pettitte] needs to check in," said manager Joe Girardi. "He knows to check and he just didn't do it . . . It shouldn't happen. It shouldn't happen, but it did."

Lew: Wanna grab a pair of seats next-to-each-other now that they've dropped all the way down to $1250/game?!? Let's see: multiply by the 75 or so home games left this season and we're in for $93,750 apiece.

What are we waiting for?!?

Mike,

Well, I never said he looked over there. This is what I was referring to when I wrote that Pettitte said he was paying attention to Ellsbury. I didn't want you to think I just make things up. Obviously, he wasn't paying good enough attention.

"Obviously, that's frustrating," Pettitte said. "I was in the windup. I should have been in the stretch. Jorgie told me to keep an eye on him. I saw him in the corner of my eye and tried to speed up my windup."

OK, but we HAVE to spring for this also:
Mohegan Sun Sports Bar | yankees.com: Ballpark

It's only an extra $750/head.

And if he keeps that up...he'll have guys stealing third & home on him all the time. Pitchers can rarely recover by altering their delivery.

And that was my main point. Pettitte's gotten lazy about some basics. You have to look before you pitch. THAT is "paying attention." Otherwise, it's too late. Every time.

Why not?!? Although I'm not sure if I like the idea of having to be in "appropriate attire" at the ballpark...

Afterwards, we can stop at Lobels and pick up some meat for a BBQ back at my place.

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

^^^

Did you see the botched play last night in the bottom of the ninth? Youkilis made a very good play (handling and underhanding it), but Lopez dropped the ball. Sigh. We should have gone to extra innings.

On ESPN, Kruk was all over Lopez (and pitchers in general) for that one. He went over the three things pitchers do in spring training: run, throw, and practice that particular play. He was not happy!

Mike:
You make a good point. It's a baseball game so 'proper attire' for men should be:
Team T-shirt, uniform top or the like (I usually wear an 'Evil Empire' T-shirt); jeans or shorts; sneakers, docksiders or flip flops (bonus points for built in bottle opener); top off with sweat stained ball cap (bonus points for a frayed brim showing a hat with some genuine age to it). I don't buy the 'I came from work BS', change before you head to the game. If you wear a suit and tie or even 'business casual' to a baseball game you are a tool

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

I was once on a bus with Johnny Damon's family and his father was wearing a BBQ stained T-Shirt (because he had gone for BBQ right before the game).

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

I'm not liking the early returns on the Cubs season. Today's 10-0 embarrassment featured the following starting lineup:

Soriano (.298)
Theriot (.308)
Bradley (.097)
Lee (.200)
Johnson (.222)
Soto (.111)
Miles (.195)
Fontenot (.227)

And the pitching was equally disturbing, with Marmol giving up 4 runs in 1/3 inn., raising his ERA to 6.75.

Wow. Royals win two in a row and go back into first while cutting down the (previously) hot Bluejays. 2 Triples from a catcher?

How about two triples from any one person in a game? It doesn't happen all that often. Now I want to know what the record is for a single game by one player -- probably three?

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

how about 2 triples in an all-star game by the same guy.

That gave it to me since I had just had some discussions about guys who had stolen home a lot when I was a kid.

Good piece of trivia, Tony!

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

Does anyone here remember Lou Brock and Curt Flood? Those were some excellent players from approximately that time period. Heck, Lou Brock had 118 stolen bases in one season -- astonishing to me, actually. And Curt Flood, while an excellent defender and a .300 hitter for several seasons, is a bit infamous for another reason. Looking at it in retrospect, it's quite different to me now than it seemed then.

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

I know both of course but Flood refused to be traded to the Phillies.
Resulting in the eventual creation of free agency

October 7, 1969: Traded by the St. Louis Cardinals with Byron Browne, Joe Hoerner and Tim McCarver to the Philadelphia Phillies for Dick Allen, Jerry Johnson and Cookie Rojas. Curt Flood refused to report to his new team. The St. Louis Cardinals sent Willie Montanez (April 8, 1970) and Bob Browning (minors) (August 30, 1970) to the Philadelphia Phillies to complete the trade.

heh, actually it turned out very well as Willie Montanez became one of the most popluar Phils ever and he was eventually traded for the "secretary of defense".

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

I'm quite pleased the BoSox won game three of their series against the Rays. Wakefield wasn't as sharp as his previous three or so outings, but he was good enough. I read where he is 20-5 lifetime against Tampa Bay, and 10-3 at Tropicana.

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

He's the first pitcher to have 20 wins against the Rays. He's generally been very good against them.

Too bad about yesterday though.
