2009 MLB Thread - Page 38

Lee is starting game 5, Blanton's Game 4.

i don't think A-Rod's nerves have anything to do with it, his insecurities have had PLENTY of opportunities in the ALDS and ALCS to get the better of him, and yet he's responded not just with solid contact, but with homers.  i think it's just superior pitching for 2 nights.  game 3 will tell.

btw ratings for game 2 were up 44% from last year's game 2.

And the highest Game 2 since 2004 (which was the Red Sox sweep, btw), beating out everything else on TV.

Crazy NY-Philly weekend, starting with the Knicks-76ers today (which I doubt a lot of people care). And tomorrow, Giants-Eagles and Yankees-Phillies. Even more funny, it happens to be the 2 NY teams that shared the same stadium, once upon a time, which is why I usually assume Yankees fans are Giants fan.

Walter,

Hi.  As you can surmise from many of my posts from last year's NBA season, I care a lot -- and will be keeping an eye on that game, especially since Boston visits the Spectrum (or rather, Philadelphia) next week.  A perfect weekend for me?  The Phillies, Eagles, 76ers (against the Knickerbockers), and Celtics all winning.  Heck, I'll even throw in the Flyers for good measure.  But the Celtics have to defeat New Orleans on Sunday for me to really be hyped. :)

I meant to say, the people in both cities, would not really care about the basketball game, at least not as much as the other 2 games.

Game being delayed as I'm typing this.

Ya know, going back to that Pedro game...did anyone else have flashbacks?

Especially when Charlie Manuel was shown talking to Pedro in the dugout after the 6th and Pedro was up to 99 pitches?  Just like I was yelling at my televised image of Grady Little a few years ago when he went out to the mound when Pedro was at 100 pitches to take...him...out.

I don't know why neither manager listened to me.

More vintage McCarver tonight.

In describing the guy who "invented" the donuts used by on-deck batters, McCarver called him "the great Yankee great Elston Howard."

I always love getting news tidbits from the department of redundancy department.

Hey!  Scott's kids hero (Jason Werth) just put one out.  He pointed it toward that $1,000,000 banner in left field.

I was just thinking to myself that he stands rather awkwardly at the plate...then he goes and does that!

I think Nick Swisher could have caught that ball that became a Double for Feliz.

Wow!  Nice bunt by Hamels.

jeez rollins walks and victorino swinging at the dirt.

Yeah...but he came through.  Hamels should have taken third on Damon's arm...

Instant replay in a World Series.  I hate it.
yep and now the phils have stopped making pettitte throw pitches.

Hey!  Does anyone want to know what I thought of the big Jay-Z/Alicia Keys song before the start of game 2 of this WS?

...

I didn't think so.

I didn't know the Vice-President was at the game...until I saw him during the 7th inning stretch.
i don't think that A-Rod shot would have gone out, that camera was sticking out way over the fence, and it hit the lens.  simple physics.

gotta feel for Ryan Howard.  when he's not facing lefty starters, it's AJ Burnett.

these strike zones are so ten years ago.
oops, scratch that:

"It looked like the camera was out over the fence," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "The umpire told me that before the game that they talked about that, and if it hit the camera that it was going to be a home run."

But Manuel said that if the umpires discussed that among themselves, they failed to notify the Phillies.

"We tour the field during the Series whenever we go to a new ballpark and discuss specific ground rules and potential trouble areas, just like that," crew chief Gerry Davis said. "Because we cannot control what the cameraman does with the camera, one of the specific ground rules is when the ball hits the camera: home run."

Must have been so easy, even a caveman can do it! And with a baseball bat instead of a club.

Sorry, just couldn't resist!

The Phils have runners on 1st & 2nd with no outs in the bottom of the fifth and come up empty.  Ugh.
yeah, ugh.

I think this is the key inning here.

Tie game!

Man, thank goodness for Feliz and (again!) Utley.  I am thrilled that the Phillies tied this game up.  But the Yankees are tough as nails, scoring again in the top of the ninth.  I really hope that the Phillies win this game.  Then, Cliff Lee may get to pitch two more games. :)

Yankees take 3 games to 1 lead.  That'll be tough to overcome.

Tough outing for Lidge.  Ugly.

Even with Cliff Lee, I wonder if the Phils can score on AJ Burnett.

Walter,

You're probably right about that.  I'm recalling the Burnett from the beginning of the year, when the Red Sox defeated the Yankees the first eight times they faced them.  Burnett (and much of Yankee pitching) wasn't very impressive at that time.  But how they turned their team around this year is IMO amazing.  They are far and away the best team in baseball this year, finding a way to win in almost every situation -- and especially when it matters most.

Kinda reminding me of the past Yankee teams in the late 90's, as much as I hate to say it.

Until this year's playoffs, I was never really impressed with Burnett, who was usually injury-prone, and I kept expecting him to implode at some point. But so far, he hasn't!

WTF ...

WTF ?  Fox puts a camera in the field of play and no one tells them to move it before the game ?  I've read that the umps walk the field before the game to look the place over and talk about the ground rules.  That should have been fixed before the game started.
WTF is with the umps in the series this year, these are supposed to be the best rated umps ?
WTF Damon, why are you running to 3rd, are you nuts ?  Oh yeah, that's the 3rd baseman covering because of the over-shift on Tex when he's batting left handed.  Did either Buck or Timmy mention this fact or did Fox show the defensive alignment before the play ?  Maybe I missed it.
WTF is Philly doing in that defense with a base stealer at 1st ?  Guess they hadn't seen that play back-fire on other teams that over shifted against lefties before ?

I thought Fox did a lousy job explaining the shift on Tex during that Damon play.  heads up on his part.

Looks like somebody finally found their bats tonight...
