2009 MLB Thread - Page 37

Eric,

Yeah, the weather may not cooperate today/tonight.  I think another day off would not be a bad thing for either team.  Sabathia already would have had four days rest if he were to pitch Sunday (unfortunately).  With five days rest, there is no way that Sabathia could possibly give up even one hit, let alone lose the game. ;)

Congrats to the Yankees...who will host the Phillies in Game 1 of the World Series Wednesday night.

Tim McCarver:  I couldn't help but think of how appropriate it is for Mariano Rivera to start each pitch with a bow.

Are you kidding me?

Tim must think Mariano is bowing to Jeter's calm eyes.

Mike,

If you had to make a prediction for the World Series, what would it be?

I'll be rootin' for the Phillies...but if I was laying down $$$ it'd be on the Yankees.

I wonder if it was the cold or if something got inside the Angels' heads during those games at Yankee Stadium.  There were an awful lot of errors which cost them those losses.
I too will be rooting for the Phillies, obviously.  I'd love for Sabathia to get hammered badly in game one.  Now watch Cliff Lee get shelled. ;)

I laughed loudly when he said that.  McCarver and Morgan need to retire from broadcasting games.

Anyhow, at least Steve Phillips is history.:)

Morgan could have retired years ago, Robert!    (And it would've been okay with me...)

You see, I laughed outloud when I heard that, too.  It was delivered with that McCarver drama flair.

Whaddya say...we get together sometime next season and watch a YES broadcast of a Yankee/Red Sox game and critique the announcers.  If we can swing it, we'll switch half-way and critique the NESN announcers too!  I'll bring the beer!

Ozzie Guillen will be doing analysis for the WS, it should be pretty entertaining :)

Is he going to be "on the field" ala Ken Rosenthal?  They wouldn't put him in the booth...would they?
Hopefully, Craig Sager will be on the field.  Just seeing what style and color suit jacket he's wearing is almost worth the price of admission. ;)

Heywood Hale Broun was doing that schtick long before Craig Sager was on anyone's horizons...
^^^

Then why not bring him along for the event?

;)

We got Joba, we got Phil Hughes, we got Damaso Marte, we got Phil Coke, etc.
Who gets the call when the game is on the line ?  A balding almost 40 year old with one pitch that's about 3 or 4 mph slower than it used to be. I LOVE IT !
All of a sudden Girardi is a genius because Mo can get him 6 outs.  CC is a horse and we may yet ride him to #27 but for my money, Mo is the MVP of every series the Yanks win.
P.S. saw an interesting article online yesterday.  Seems some of the concrete in the $1.5B palace is already cracking

Things may start to get smelly...

When you don't have the likes of Jimmy Hoffa to use as reinforcement...

Did you see Cole Hamels commenting on his suit at the end of an interview in the NLCS?  Classic.  His ties are just as fantastic.

Philip,

Yes!  And every time I see Cole Hamels on the mound, I really do expect his father to trot out there to talk to him....

Go Phillies!
That wasn't his father, he was the father to the 2 kids still sitting in the stands.
Tony,

No, it was his father.  I know Cole Hamels personally.

Well he does say, who are you to the guy.

Anyway the phils really let C.C. off the hook in the first inning.

Yet still seem to have this game well-in-hand...thanks to Cliff Lee.
Cliff Lee and Chase Utley wow.

So the Yanks play that song even when they lose?

Yeah.  They used to play the Liza Minnelli version when they lost...but they finally ditched that and just loop Frank over and over and over and over while patrons exit the park--after every game.

Tony,

You're right, of course.  I was just kidding around.

Goodness, Christy Mathewson has been incredible in this post-season, hasn't he? ;)

Seriously, what a remarkable outing by Lee last night.  I knew he was good, but not this good.  His ERA is looking Bob Gibson-esque at this point.

One of the two-best road teams in baseball played like it last night.  I was thankful that the Phillies didn't resemble either Boston or the Angels against New York.  But I was a little concerned in the ninth inning after the throwing error.  Not too much, but just a little.  And dare I say it, Philadelphia may have just as good a starting lineup as the Yankees, and that is saying a ton.

I am so curious to watch tonight's game.

The "Pedro factor" will be huge.  The Zimmer throwdown, "Who's your daddy?", etc.

Should be fun.

Of all the pitchers in MLB, Pedro is still the guy--because of the way he throws and the movement on his pitches--who is "must see" for me.
I'm just suprised that after Chase utley ropped that ball foul, that Sabathia shrugged off Posada's next pitch and wanted to pitch him again to the inside.  Of course even worse, he left it out over the plate for the 2nd homer.
I have never been a Yankee fan because originally I was a Brooklyn Dodger fan. I am rooting for the Phillies because I don't like teams who spend alot of $$$$ to buy championships. Last year while Tampa Bay had a bad WS - they had a better TEAM without  spending alot of money.

Mike,

I am very impressed with Sabathia, but not so much with the rest of the Yankees starters.  I could easily see this series heading to Philly with the Phillies up 2-0.  Odd how one game can mean so much.  This is almost a must-win for New York.

MO IS THE MAN.  and to think that he's dominating the way he is, at his age.  words cannot describe.

but wow, that strike zone was huge tonight.  but consistently huge.  A-rod has been off 2 nights in a row(!)  i heard something like in the first 3 games of the Angels series, he never swung-and-missed at ANY pitch.  that's how locked in he was.  and how about Matsui taking that Guerrero-like swing downtown.
That Matsui home run was unbelievable.  He golfed it; it was so far out of the strike zone.  The gigantic strike zone put a damper on the game IMO.  Neither side's batters could figure out what to swing at.
Maybe A-Rod is a bit unnerved about being on the biggest baseball stage?

Well, the Phillies are sending Hamels to the mound for game three, and hopefully Lee to the mound for game four.  Hopefully, the Phillies will be up 3-1 by the time game five rolls around.  I really hope this series doesn't return to New York.
