IMO, Youk should be solid at 1b.  He's a gold glover there.  Good at third, too.  But, better at first.

But we're getting into the Hot Stove discussions a little too early for my taste.  I've still got to worry about tomorrow's game first.  Why a 12:07pm start I wonder?

==============

And why should we pursue Matsui just because Lowell might be leaving?  Is there a rule that the Sox NEED to have at least one player who can't run?  That must be why we had Sean Casey for awhile!

Mike,

Okay, no more Hot Stove discussions until you allow us to continue. ;)

Seriously, I am confident that Buchholz will come through today.  I do hope that the Red Sox score about eight runs as well.  We'll see how it goes.  They were very strong at home this year.

I think I'm ready for some Hot Stove discussions now.

It seems obvious to me the Angels are mighty hungry this post season.  They've got that look in their eye and a confidence they've been lacking in years past.

Congrats to the Dodgers and Angels for making it to their respective Championship Series.
Mike,

And eight runs looks like it might have done it for Boston today, except for the way the Angels have been playing lately.  They look very, very good right now.

I can't pick the NL pennant, but I'd say the Angels in five games over the Yankees.  Any thoughts and/or predictions?

I like the look of the Dodgers right now.  I guess a Yanks/Dodgers series would be a cool thing for baseball.

Lots of history there.

BTW, does anyone else have the same issue as me with the TBS telecast of these Division series games?  That "pitch tracker" that's in the lower right hand corner of my 16:9 HDTV is half off the screen.  Any pitch that would be inside to a right-handed batter cannot be seen on that thing because the right 1/3 to 1/2 of the image is missing off-the-screen.  I find those things to be unnecessary anyway...but it seems odd that it's not presenting on my set properly.

I checked the settings on my TV and Dish Network box and they seem correct.  Anyone else?

too much overscan with your tv.

Adjustable?

The rest of the graphics all look like they fall where they normally would (inside the 4:3 frame inside the 16:9).  This is the first time I've ever noticed anything like this.
I'm pretty sure that graphic goes off the screen and all you should see is the box and a little to the right of it.

did you see the location of the pitches on the outside of the plate on that box, to Matt stairs assuming your watching the game now?

most tv's can only have overscan adjusted by a trained tv calibrator or someone who knows what they're doing with a service manual.
it's not really something to mess with.

btw if the Phils lose this game they have themselves to blame because they left runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out in the 8th inning.
Ok here we go it's Brad Lidge in for a close.
It's not half off my screen - but I can't see the right side (I have a 4:3 RPTV, and the HDTV cable box converts the signal to 16:9).

I'll go for that! Some recent history too - Torre's return to the Bronx.

Of course, I wouldn't mind a replay of the 1950 World Series either.

Getting past the Angels won't be easy.

Now I'm always going to be wondering if I've been missing something all these years (and will continue to miss something).  It's weird thinking that stuff is falling off the screen.  All these years of being OAR faithful...

You'd be surprised how much overscan those tv's have, especially crt's and tubes.
should be about 5% but is usually around 10%. Or more.

Mine is a CRT.

Probably one of the last of its kind.

Here's a couple pix of this phenomenon:

And here is the same at-bat (featuring Ryan Howard from tonight's game) in which they used the PitchTrax on a replay (moving it into the "safe" 4:3 area of the screen:

the easiest way to find out is play a DVD on your computer, which has no overscan.  then play it on your tv and compare.

anyways, in the Yankee game. i'm surprised Girardi lifted Pettite when he did, he only threw 81 pitches, but i guess he wanted to give Chamberlain some meaningful innings as he might need him for that later on.  also, Hughes hasn't looked good in the playoffs, and i think had to be bailed out a couple times by Mo in the days leading up to the end of the season.
Mike that IS overscan, and a good bit of it.

Thats what I see, a little overscan.

Hmph.  I can't even see the chalk line in the right-handed hitter's batters box on my set.  You get that and a whole lot more.

I'd be blissfully ignorant if it wasn't for TBS!

Congrats to the Phillies, Tony!  Back-to-back championships?!?  We'll see.  I think the AL will be sending some tough competition this year.   and the Dodgers aren't any light-weights either.  These should be two good Championship Series this year.
Oh man the emails notification is so annoying, when are they going to fix that.
Jeez it takes you right to the first post everytime.

anyway, that was a greta series nail biters every game but the first.
Much tougher then the Brewers last year.
Go Phillies!  What an ending to that game!!!  Wow!
That was quite a finish.  And to think, I've seen two of them in as many days.  The Angels did something quite similar to the Red Sox on Sunday (coming back from two runs down and scoring three in the top of the ninth to win it).

I have no doubt that the four best teams in baseball are playing for the pennant, and this is how it should be.  It's interesting to think that three of them will end up on the losing side of things when all is said and done.

It should be very interesting to see who gets there.  The Dodgers have a stellar bullpen -- much better than I thought it was, not having followed it all year like I have the bullpens for the American League teams.  I'm hoping for an Angels - Phillies World Series, with the Angels prevailing.  But methinks New York and Los Angeles may have something to say about that. ;)

so RS Fans:  what did you think of the Intentional Walk?  i didn't think it was that big a deal at the time (in truth, Papelbon just didn't have it and either way he probably would have lost) but Red Sox Nation seems to be up in arms:

An IBB of Torii Hunter to pitch to Vlad Guerrero with the bases loaded?

I didn't like the call.  That's Vlad the Impaler...he of the lifetime .321 batting average.  Hunter's a lifetime .274.  You make the call.
i dunno.  this ain't the same Vlad.  plus, going into the series, his postseason history was worse than A-Rod's :P  (rbi-wise at least).

friday can't come soon enough.

Vlad's a monster...just like A-Rod.

Big, brawny.  Hit...ball...far.

Eric:  HERE'S Francona's obvious explanation.  He stands by it (what else would he do?).

What is "overscan". I get the MLB and NFL in germany via "ESPNAMERICA" which used to be NASN. All are 4:3. The Pitchtrax appears on occasion. In the US on a widescreen - does it display all the time???
