I think the best method to break the spell of DVD is to stop selling special editions for this format. It must be made clear that Blu Ray is the format of choice for film and home theater enthusiasts.
That's what I find so crazy about this selling approach. By everything I know, it's back-ass-wards. With 9 out of 10 consumers buying DVDs over BD, shouldn't Disney be promoting the SE DVD version of SW over the less profitable BD version??? Betcha Wal-mart and the other major retailers would agree. Just a thought......

They will be promoting it I am sure. Just 6 weeks later.

Is it really less profitable? Does it really cost more than $2.50* to press a Blu-ray?

*$10 MSRP increase means about $5 for Disney. You're adding one DVD, but subtracting two others that I'm not accounting for, so the per-disc cost could even be slightly more and still break even.

It certainly was that way with DVD.

Re: Snow White to hit Blu-ray SEVEN WEEKS before the DVD

Now this is a clever move -

The Blu-Ray /DVD bundle will come packaged in a Blu-Ray case:
Amazon.com: Snow White (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + BD Live w/ Blu-ray packaging) [Blu-ray]: Adriana Caselotti, Roy Atwell, Lucille LaVerne, David Hand: Movies & TV

- and also a DVD case variant:
Amazon.com: Snow White (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + BD Live w/ DVD packaging) [Blu-ray]: Roy Atwell, Adriana Caselotti, Stuart Buchanan, Eddie Collins, Pinto Colvig: Movies & TV

Having the standard DVD packaging should net a lot of DVD-folk purchases.

I hope the number of returns of the wolf in sheep's clothing Blu-ray in DVD packaging aren't too high.

Re: Snow White to hit Blu-ray SEVEN WEEKS before the DVD

Personally I love the fact that they're considering doing this.

Here in New Zealand, quite often we'll have a particular title (both new releases and catalogue) released on DVD, with the Blu-Ray coming out a couple of months later. Which annoys me because it means people who might actually buy the Blu-Ray will see the DVD only, may assume the title won't be released on Blu-Ray, buy the DVD, and then may not be inclined to repurchase the Blu-Ray when it does come out. (Indeed, one such delayed title was Sleeping Beauty - it was initially announced as a same-day release for both versions, then the Blu-Ray never happened and just appeared on the shelves a couple of months later. The other title that really annoyed me was season 4 of Lost - the Blu-Ray's release date changed three or four times, and eventually came out four months after the DVD.)

So it's nice to think that Disney might actually adopt the opposite approach.

I'm not sure if you understood what I meant, because my proposal is to stop releasing DVD special editions at all.

DVD = cheap bare bones consumer
Blu Ray = film / home theater enthusiast

In my opinion, this is a necessary step to manage the transition between the 2 formats. Blu Ray needs to take the place as THE ONLY format for film enthusiasts, and better picture quality isn't necessarily the only push people need to adopt this format. Perhaps the bare bones DVD version could include a coupon to buy the Blu Ray version at a cheaper price.

Re: Snow White to hit Blu-ray SEVEN WEEKS before the DVD

I just wonder how many people will be mad that to get the DVD they will either have to wait seven weeks or shell out extra cash to get it early. Standard DVD will probably sell for around $18-$20 while Blu/DVD combo sells ro $25 +.
As for the bare bones DVD and Blu special addition idea, that would really make some people mad. This may sound dumb, but I know people who, even though they would never watch the special features, would be mad that blu-rays get all the bells and whistles and DVD gets nothing extra. Some people are just that way. And then there are those DVD watchers that DO want the extras but don'g have blu-rays.
As for me personally, I hope Disney keeps making blu available first. But I'm a blu-ray owner.

My wife would kill me if I brought that into the house; moreso after seeing the price.

Re: Snow White to hit Blu-ray SEVEN WEEKS before the DVD

^ Yeah but $250 is only the MSRP. You'll probably be able to get it for about $175 so I can't see how she'd have a problem then.

Re: Snow White to hit Blu-ray SEVEN WEEKS before the DVD

I never paid that much for one movie except on 35mm film.

At least you have a choice between expensive knick-knacks or not, unlike WB with Gone With The Wind, Wizard of Oz, and Casablanca.

Re: Snow White to hit Blu-ray SEVEN WEEKS before the DVD

I haven't paid that kind of price on optical media since laserdisc box sets. Am I really getting new information that I didn't get in the original Snow White LD box set?

I do however spend that kind of money on 16mm when absolutely necessary.

Re: Snow White to hit Blu-ray SEVEN WEEKS before the DVD

That box set probably doesn't even come out here, so I can't even buy it. I wouldn't buy it anyway, the price is way too high for something like that.

Re: Snow White to hit Blu-ray SEVEN WEEKS before the DVD

But the price includes a coupon for a meet and greet with Walt Disney after they unfreeze his head. That's worth $250 right?

I will give Disney props for trying everything under the sun to get the buying public to embrace BluRay (Digital Copies, DVD's in the BR Box), but I see two outcomes here.

No one here will buy a BR in a DVD box, even if the contents of the box is the same.

And the non-enthusiast (the real target for this) that has not yet gone Blu is going to return the damn thing (as Bryan suggested) when they realize that they can not play 2 of the 3 discs.

What's next? Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
The glass coffin edition?
or how about packaging the DVD with a box of apples? This is just silly. The sick side of me thinks it would have been cool to package the box set in a replica of the box the Huntsman is supposed to bring Snow White's heart back in; in poor taste, maybe, but cool.

Re: Snow White to hit Blu-ray SEVEN WEEKS before the DVD

Actually, a tie-in rebate with Seneca apple juice would be pretty clever, and not too far out of character for Disney, which has had some interesting food tie-ins with their previous platinum/SE releases.

Let's see, it was animal crackers for The Jungle Book, Nature's Harvest bread for Sleeping Beauty, Minute Maid juice for SB/WALL-E/Prince Caspian/Tinker Bell, and peanut butter(?) for Pinocchio.

I'd give Disney major props for being clever and gutsy enough to actually go through with it.

Re: Snow White to hit Blu-ray SEVEN WEEKS before the DVD

Good lord; I just found out about that Snow White and her Big Box of Junk release, as pictured above. In terms of over-priced bells and whistles, I think Snow White wins the award, hands down. I think I'll start referring to it as the "Poison Apple Edition."

Re: Snow White to hit Blu-ray SEVEN WEEKS before the DVD

As long as I can buy the release with only its regular disc packaging I could not care less about how they package the various gift sets.

Well, normally I would be first in line to buy re-releases of Wizard of Oz and Gone With the Wind, but they are both only going to be available in "Big Box of Junk" editions this time around. I'm sure that by the holidays they'll come out again in a "Pauper's Edition." I already have Big Box of Junk editions for those movies in standard def.

Snow White Diamond Edition Detailed
Posted May 19, 2009 04:34 AM by Juan Calonge

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has detailed the exclusive extras of the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs', which will hit store shelves on October 6 in a Combo Pack, consisting of two BDs and one DVD. Video will be 1.33:1 1080p with optional “DisneyView” artwork. Audio will be 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio.

With 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs', Disney is launching a new product line, the “Diamond Collection”, which aims to bring audiences “the most immersive and highest-level viewing experience.”

Exclusive extras for this Diamond Edition Blu-ray include:

Hyperion Studios: viewers can virtually walk the halls of Hyperion Studios, which Walt Disney himself built and where 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' was conceived and developed. This “Backstage Disney” feature contains archival photos, never-before-heard animator recordings, archival transcripts and rare footage of Walt himself.
Magic Mirror: the Magic Mirror guides the audience through the disc features. It will recognize viewing patterns, know where the audience has left off and will even suggest where to navigate next. This new feature for a Disney Blu-ray release allows viewers to customize the viewing experience.
DisneyView: as with 'Pinocchio' before, Disney artist Toby Bluth filled the black vertical bars at the sides of the movie frame with (optional) custom imagery.
About Toby Bluth: Disney artist Toby Bluth tells how the movie inspired him to create the DisneyView art.
Mirror, Mirror On The Wall (BD-Live): this mirror can find the secret princess inside each viewer with a series of questions, then create a personal message from that princess, who will call the viewer on the telephone.
What Do You See?: to win this interactive game, players must untangle scrambled images.
Jewel Jumble: players put jewels from the Dwarfs' mine in the proper order to win this game.
Scene Stealer: this feature allows viewers to upload a personal photo and experience life as one of the Seven Dwarfs--on-screen in the actual film.

Same here. They could charge $50 or $50,000 for the gift box and I'll be buying the regular one.

So when you pre-order, they will accept the coupon when you pick it up at the store?

It is being reported that amazon.com has a code SNOWHITE (with just one "w") that will take $10 off the upcoming Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Blu-ray release (probably to "match" the $10 coupon that's floating around.  That drops the amazon price to $14.99.

Apparently there are also bundle deals if you buy Snow White and either (or both) of the recent Tinkerbell releases.  SW + TB: Lost Treasure = $8 off.
