Fox the next "Ten" - Page 2

Re: Fox the next "Ten"

^ You know, I never even thought of that. But I bet, to at least some extent, you're correct. Retailers demand cheaper back-catalog BD to make having a Blu "section" worthwhile to them, to "fill it out" at the lower end and to make BD seem less a fancy niche.

At WM in Canada, you go through the BD section and most new titles are $30 and over. Obviously this is not the most conducive to sales at this retail level, nor encouraging to potential BD adopters.

Well, I see that a number of these titles are showing up on Amazon for pre-order at $17.49 a piece. As long as the PQ/SQ quality doesn't suffer, I'm all for it even if they wind up being bare-bones.

Re: Fox the next "Ten"

I'm looking forward to M*A*S*H. The Five Star DVD was pretty good for it's time. I expect Fox to do the BD justice. A good non-DNRd transfer and extras will put it on my buy list.

Now how much market penetration do we need to get Alien? The SE DVD upscaled looks better than I expected but the BD should deliver much more.

IMO Dark Blue is a GREAT film and if I were upgrading my SD collection I wouldn't hesitate to buy it on BD immediately.

Just wanted to throw that out there.

I'd think it was less a market penetration issue than Fox waiting to tie in with Jim Cameron's Avatar, which happens to be set to premiere right in the middle of this year's holiday buying season (December 18), which would in turn fall in line with this report from Bill Hunt back in February (emphasis mine):

Now, however, we CAN confirm that our industry sources have informed us that Fox's current plans call for not just the first three films, but the ENTIRE Alien Quadrilogy set to be ported over to Blu-ray Disc for a late 2009 release. This would include all four films in the series - the complete set will all extras - and likely new material created exclusively for the Blu-ray release as well. We understand that the work is still on-going and (as always with these Rumor Mill posts) all of this is subject to change. But with a little luck, the Quad set should make its debut in 1080p before the year is out.

Market penetration. I wonder about that sometimes. Do more titles come out because people invest in the formats, or does the greater availability of titles provoke more people to invest in players?
