Fox the next "Ten"

FOX to release the following on Blu-ray on June 2nd:

Dark Blue
The Graduate
M*A*S*H
Navy Seals
Out of Time
Road House
Rollerball
To Live and Die in L.A.
The Towering Inferno
Walking Tall

Specs have not announced yet, but expect a 1080p video presentation with a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

This is good news. and though I love M*A*S*H - is this really one of the best films to put out to show off the format?

Re: Fox the next "Ten"

It would be nice to think we're past the point of only releasing titles to "show off the format." It's time for studios to just release good movies in the best format possible.

Well, there are so many films in FOX's hands that will look fantastic on Blu-Ray. With something like M*A*SH - I'll stick with the standard DVD - the film is grainy to begin with and wasn't filmed in 70MM.

After viewing FOX's "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" on Blu-ray I past on a purchase since I didn't feel the need to upgrade. This are good films - just not ones that I feel need to be in HD at the moment.

Where's "Cleopatra' or "Agony and the Ecstacy" or "Sound of Music" - these will look incredible on HD. Most consumers wouldn't be imrpessed with the p/q of M*A*S*H - and isn't sales what drives these releases?

Re: Fox the next "Ten"

Great, based on Blu-ray.com it looks like Rollerball is going to be the awful remake, not the original. Just fantastic.

(I hope I'm wrong and Norman Jewison's version is getting released.)

Re: Fox the next "Ten"

Fox believes these films will make money, and that even in spite of the 1970s-fog-and-diffusion-everywhere-imaginable look there will be some gain over a DVD. The Graduate and The Towering Inferno have aired on HDNet Movies and looked pretty good, and the BDs should be even better.

Re: Fox the next "Ten"

There's 10 titles I don't have to worry about buying. Love M*A*S*H, but really don't feel compelled to buy it on Blu-Ray. The other 9 I don't even own on DVD so definitely of no interest to me.

Re: Fox the next "Ten"

Wouldn't they be of *more* interest if you don't already own them?

I'm definitely interested in The Graduate, which I never bought on DVD, but doubt I'll upgrade the ones on that list that I already own (unless I see 'em really cheap).

Re: Fox the next "Ten"

It all depends on pricing as to whether I even give these a glance on release day. But unfortunately knowing Fox I don't expect them to retail below $39.95.

OOOOH! NAVY SEALS!

Name that movie!

From that list, count me in for The Graduate day and date. I'll wait for M*A*S*H, To Live and Die in L.A., and The Towering Inferno to go on sale.

Speaking of which, Kevin Smith has said that Clerks and Chasing Amy are both coming to Blu-ray in July (I assume that date is tentative though).

Have you seen those other nine titles? If you love "M*A*S*H then why not buy it on the best video format available to you?

Re: Fox the next "Ten"

I'll buy The Graduate and rent M*A*S*H to give it another shot. Otherwise, not my type of films. But more catalog is good.

I think I know what Brent means. I think Silence Of The Lambs, for example, is a great movie and I love it but based on how often I watch the DVD of it, I don't know if I'll ever pick it up. That being said, I see your point too but the higher price on Blu-rays has made me more selective in what I buy.

There are a couple of somewhat bright spots in there. M*A*S*H, To Live and Die in L.A. and The Graduate are all good films. But the rest? I agree with another poster in this thread - I'm growing weary of the 3rd rate catalog titles some studios keep peppering their release announcements with. Dark Blue? Navy S.E.A.L.S.? Road House? Walking Tall (probably the remake)? Come on Fox. Why spend the time, money, and effort on dreck like this? There are so many GREAT movies not available on BRD. People will buy more Blu-ray *if* you release films that they WANT.

I understand the pricing issue and the current state of economy. However, there are very few films that I actually love that I wouldn't buy on the best video format available to me. Also, just because you think of a film as great doesn't necessarily mean you love it. As as example for me, I think "Saving Private Ryan" is a great film, but it's a film I wouldn't want to watch very often.

Don't talk bad about Road House, now you're crossing the line.

Also, two of those films aren't just good they're great films that impacted the way films are made, but to each his own.

THIS.

And Doug, if you're not interested in any titles, don't post in the thread. It's just unnecessary, antagonistic threadcrapping to those who are interested in these titles, two of which happen to be in the AFI Top 100 films of all time. Just remember that what you want (or not) is not the same as others, and that just as there are Top 100 films like The Graduate and M*A*S*H, there are films like Road House and Navy Seals that you may not be aware are considered popular cult classics.

Whoa there! Unnecessary, antagonistic threadcrapping? Are you suggesting that anything other than glowing praise posted in a thread discussing a BRD release announcement by a major studio is inappropriate? Me thinks that someone is a bit too thin-skinned. I didn't criticize anyone's taste in film nor did I personally attack anyone. The industry reads HTF and I was merely expressing my opinion about this slate. My thoughts on Fox's decision to release these titles are just as legitimate as yours Jesse, even if you don't happen to agree with them.

Re: Fox the next "Ten"

I'll be snapping up the brilliant To Live and Die in LA asap.

I LOVE that film.

Re: Fox the next "Ten"

Towering Inferno will be a buy for me. While I truly love MASH, I worry if the grain in the original will go the way of Patton and The Longest Day. I will wait until the reviews are in before I get that one. The others, I have on SD and do not feel the need to upgrade.

Re: Fox the next "Ten"

Just M*A*S*H and To Live and Die in L.A. from this batch.

The Graduate isn't a film I'd rewatch more than once every 10 years or so and I didn't like any of the rest.

Exactly. I'm MUCH more selective about what I buy on Blu-Ray than I was with DVDs. Of those 10 movies listed, I really only like M*A*S*H and wouldn't be interested in owning any of the others.

Huh? No, I was saying if you're not interested in anything but one-word quips, move along. It's not adding anything to the discussion and it's meant to be inflammatory (otherwise you wouldn't have posted it, see previous). Unnecessary, antagonistic, threadcrap.

Now, if instead you'd just posted your actual comments, which you had to be prompted to do, that would have been different.

Well, considering I never said any of these things to you, I don't see where it's relevant.

Re: Fox the next "Ten"

We have HTF Mods in place to police the threads, if you think there's a problem with a post then hit the report post link and let the bosses decide.
Or seriously, use the Ignore function if you get this worked up over people's opinions.

Personally I'm interested in a couple of these films but took no offence with what was posted. I'd perfectly understand someone clicking on this this thread title which only specifies 10 titles and then being disappointed in the selection. If people want to vent about what the studios are offering after spending their money buying into this format then they have every right to IMO.

It's a lot different then when someone purposely enters say an Indy IV software thread just to chime in on how much they think it sucked. That's a genuine threadcrap, and while I usually think of those types of internet posters as dipshits with too much time on their hands, I don't get all worked up about it.

But again it's not up to me or you to decide.

Re: Fox the next "Ten"

I love MASH, but i wont buy it on Blu until it hits the magic $15, or under. Like others, while i love the film, i am not sure it will "look" any better on my 52" LCD, than the 2 disc DVD. Oh, and if its a bare bones Blu-ray, without the DVD extras...i wont buy it at all.
Id also buy The Towering Inferno cheap. Give me the classic Poseidon Adventure too, and not the crap remake.

Re: Fox the next "Ten"

There should be some improvement, as the advanced codecs seem to be far better at handling film grain than MPEG-2 ever was. Assuming they use them.

Re: Fox the next "Ten"

More fodder for the bargain bins of the future. So naturally I applaud this announcement. It has nothing to do with whether the movies are "good" or not, it's more that I recognise the natural habitat of these titles on home video formats. Says more about me than the titles...

This is what we get when Walmart and Best Buy tell the studios which titles what they will and will not carry
