Rights Issue Delays North By Northwest's 50th Year Release (April Fools!)

I did find it odd that WHV did not mention NORTH BY NORTHWEST at all in their latest chat. Apparently there is a reason:

Mary Alma Stone, granddaughter of Alfred Hitchcock reported at a seminar at the USC Film School that the Hitchcock family would be purchasing the rights to North by Northwest (1959). "In consultation with my mother and my two sisters, we decided to go forward with an option we hold to purchase back the rights to the film."

Full link to the story:

Entertainment News from Yahoo! News

Man, North By Northwest on Blu-Ray was my most anticipated title of the year.

Disappointing news indeed. I was also salivating over the prospect of getting my hands on NBNW in high def this year.

EDIT: Your link is broken. I didn't get suckered into an April Fools thing here, did I?

Sounds like this could be a joke... if it isn't what would they do with it hand it over to Universal so they can U COntrol all the bonus features. ha ha

True.

Hope it doesn't come back to haunt me as I really do want this title.

Well, the last I heard is that Jar-Jar Binks is making a pitch to buy the rights to "North..."...oh, never mind.

It is a Turner property, and will remain so. All the Hitchcock family owns is the "lost films" that were re issued by Universal ("Rope", "Rear Window", "Vertigo", "The Man Who Knew Too Much", "The Trouble With Harry"). Nuff said?

Talk about an April Fool's Day joke blowing up in your face. FWIW, the granddaughter who holds rights on behalf of the Hitchcock estate is Kathleen O'Connell Fiala (check out your copies of Vertigo for confirmation).

Yeah, I'll get right on that.

So, an April Fool's Joke is something that is true ... dang I'm so embarrassed.

Btw, just to correct the corrector the "rights" to the films that Jo C mentioned are held by the Alfred J. Hitchcock Trust. Kathleen O'Connell Fiala is one of the trustees. Big difference and still nothing to do with North By Northwest.

Actually, a typo was in the article.

They're buying back the rights to Topaz so the negative and all existing prints can be melted down for a limited run of Alfred Hitchcock busts made by Sideshow.

No, an April Fool's Day joke, effectively done, is something that has an air of reality initially, then becomes so ludicrous that it is incapable of being believed. There was no air of reality to this one.

Now that the joke has run it's course, could we close the thread?

Agreed. Perhaps even deleted as I wouldn't want anyone to surf into it after the fact.
