Soon to arrive Onkyo TX-SR607 or TX-SR606? Please explain to a newb.

After all my research I had decided on the Onkyo 606. Then I find out on the Onkyo website that the 607 is "coming soon". What THAT means I don't know. Thoughts?

Anyway, could someone please look at the specs and tell me in laymans terms which is the best bang for the buck? Obviously 7.2, I know and the HDMI up front but what about other things like the upscaling (same?). The 606 got slammed a few times for it's sub par upscaling.

Any input is welcome. BTW I own three Onkyo's and love them all!

I just got my 876, so I've been looking at the Onkyo's a lot lately. I don't see a whole lot of changes in the 607. 7.2 just means that it has an output for a second powered subwoofer. Unless you have 2 subs or plan on adding another one, this isn't much use. It has another HDMI on the back and also one added to the front panel, but I don't see having a lot of portable devices with HDMI. I believe the upscaling is the same, it looks like it's using the same chip and both have the same upscaling abilities. The 607 added a few sound processing modes and Ausysset dynamic volume. If it was me, unless you have a bunch of components using HDMI, or you have 2 subs, I would wait for the 607 to be released and start looking for 606's to drop in price very soon. YMMV

I don't have plans for a 2nd sub. I have a totally enclosed small theater with an SVS 12" sub that's 31 inches high. Adding another would be foolish IMO.

All we are hooking up, so far, is a dvd player, a Wii, and the PJ so front HDMI might go unused.

This is what I was after. I read several reviews of the 606 which said the upscaling was sub-par so I was hoping the 607 was an improvement but maybe it's not? Anyonel else also want to chime in on this one?

What about the Dolby IIz which allows two more high front speakers? Apparently they are to replace the back surrounds but I might be mistaken, and they might be in addition to. Since basically this feature would be the only one I would use buying the 607 over the 606, is this option worth a $200 bump in price? I'm thinking no.

I was really hoping they would beef up the HDMI upscaling...

I hadn't really looked at the DPLIIz. It actually has another set of outputs for them outside of the 7.2. They are not full size speaker terminals, so I take it these are supposed to be small speakers. I believe Yamaha has had something similar for quite a while. It might be fun to play with, but like you said, I wouldn't pay more for it, and I'm not crazy about processed sound fields to begin with, it's not how the movie was processed, it's something that is added. I don't see me running even more wires for something like this.

You might do a little more research on the upscaling, but I didn't see anything on Onkyo's website indicating any changes.
