dvd decoders

Why do they put DD and DTS decoders in dvd players? dvd players themselves cannot hook up to 5.1 speakers...you need a reciever.

Am I missing something here or do i need to buy a dvd player with a DD and or DTS decoder in order to make full use of my reciever? I have an Onkyo ht-r340. Please bear with me, I obviously dont know very much about sound systems but I am trying.

Re: dvd decoders

SD DVD players with digital audio decoders can output 5.1 channel sound via 6 individual analog cables to a receiver which has the appropriate inputs, but lacks a decoder itself.
