Sub Performance vs Price

I live in an area where all the audio retailers have gone out of business (except Best Buy) so auditioning speakers is very difficult.
Before Circuit City disappeared I listened to a Polk DSW Pro 600 that didn't sound bad. It sells for around $500.
The Polk Micro Pro 4000 Sells for $1,500.
I realize I am looking at vented vs sealed among other signifigant differences but, my question is, does the Micro Pro sound $1,000 better?

Re: Sub Performance vs Price

With subs, it not really about sound as much as it is about loudness and extension. Getting really low and staying loud requires a lot of power and a lot of volume (size).

I suggest you look at internet direct brands like SVS. $1500 will get you their top of the line model. It is both big and powerful, but not too expensive.

Re: Sub Performance vs Price

Never heard either of those Polks, personally. Polk audio is known more for their speakers, than for their subs.
Have you considered an HSU or SVS sub? They make subs in those price ranges too, and are considered to be two of the best there is. I personally like the SVS cylinder subs.
See them here:

HSU Research
Good luck with whatever you do.

I am considering Hsu after reading all the raves on various forums. I brought up the Polks because I am familiar with their other speakers and because the two subs I mentioned illustrate my question about what you get for the big price difference. Are sealed subs that much 'better'?

Define your idea of "better". There are advantages and disadvantages with each type. Sealed subs may work better for music but not have the "punch" for movie soundtracks and are generally smaller.
Ported subs are larger but can play louder and go deeper than a sealed enclosure but may not be as musical.

You just provided two good points that I can use in shaping my idea of "better". One of the best short explanations I have seen. Thank you.

Now I can continue my search

Re: Sub Performance vs Price

Atlantic Technolgy makes GREAT subs for the money.Any of their subs are really amazing. basically the more bass and the bigger the room you just go to the next model up...
They only focus on Audio Speakers so they put a lot of research and engineering into every product...
