Help with new TV & Blu-Ray setup

I'm a proud new owner of a Samsung 52" Widescreen LCD TV (LN52A550) and a Sony Blu-Ray (BDP-S350). I connected everything last night, video via HDMI to the TV and video via TOSLINK to my reciever. Went through the basic setup for the blu-ray, put in Iron Man and was ready for a life changing experience

So everything is displaying correctly on the Blu-Ray menu and the movie menu/splash screens. When the movie starts playing I have black bars on the top and bottom like I have a 4:3 TV watching a 16:9 movie. I messed with setting, searched these forums and fiddled with it for about an hour last night trying to get rid of the bars. I put in Wanted to see if it did the same, which it did. Quite dissappointed I spent so much and now have black bars.

What am I doing wrong in the configurations? TV is set to 16:9 as is the Blu-Ray player. I'm quite tech savvy, but haven't messed with home theater for 4-5 years when I got a widescreen DLP, DVD player and a Yamaha HTiB. Any help is greatly appreciated. I tried searching the forums but wasn't quite sure on what exactly to search, and had a lot of posts to sift through. Thank you in advance!

Re: Help with new TV & Blu-Ray setup

You did nothing wrong except not know the original aspect ratio of Iron Man is 2.35:1. So yes there will be black bars on your screen.

By the way, Wanted is also a 2.35:1 aspect ratio movie.

Oh thank god! Never knew there was another ratio, I just checked the discs and Wanted does say 2.35:1. Thanks RJ!

Re: Help with new TV & Blu-Ray setup

To add to what Robert said, there's three different widescreen aspect ratios. One will have no black bars (I forget which one), one will have small black bars, and the other will have bigger black bars.

Also, you understand that you'll not get the HD audio soundtracks from your blu ray movies, over the toslink cable? The only way to get those is over HDMI or 5.1/7.1 multi-channel analog outputs from player, which your Sony S350 doesn't have. You'd need the S550 for those. Of course, your receiver would need the 5.1/7.1 multi-channel analog inputs too.
Good luck with your new toys.
