Best Audio Format; HDMI, 5.1, Blu-Ray

With all the audio formats now coded to Blu-Ray discs, I'm confused as to which format to choose when watching my movies. My Sony receiver is capable of decoding all the newer formats including DD+, Dolby TrueHD, dts-HD Master, etc. I've got HDMI cables all around and utilizing my PS3 Blu-Ray player.

So, in my 5.1 system, which audio format is supposed to perform the best in my case?

Thanks!

I would try trueHD or DTSMA.

With the PS3, you'll want to set it up to pass PCM via HDMI -- not bitstream. And then, make sure you're playing back either Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD/MA whenever the title offers it -- this is especially true w/ Warner titles since *all* the ones available from Warner so far default to lossy DD. Most other titles will likely default to the lossless track for you, but it's good to doublecheck anyway -- you can usually tell just by bringing up the info display, which shows the proper (smallish) audio format logo and the bitrate meter (and seeing a *variable* audio bitrate that's usually well above 1Mbps).

In addition to Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master, multi-channel PCM is another high-resolution lossless soundtrack option you may find on some titles.

Oh yeah. Forgot about "uncompressed PCM". For that, the bitrate would *not* be variable, but would just be a high constant value -- maybe ~6Mbps for 5.1 channels.
