Has anyone mentioned Make Way For Tomorrow (1937) - directed by Leo McCarey?

It was originally a Paramount release.

They'll have to include a package of Kleenex in every case.

If it were the only way to get them released, then the films of Wheeler & Woolsey, such as Diplomaiacs, Cockeyed Cavaliers, Peach-O-Reno and Hips, Hips Hooray among others, however they deserve a better mainstream treatment with commentaries, bonus features, fanfare, publicity of a rediscovered comedy team and Warner should sponsor the duo some stars on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. This is about making right past wrongs done to these two, not by Warners but by others who neglected them when they shouldn't have out of ignorance or hate that allowed these films and their stars to slip into obscurity when they never should have. Still as I said, it would be better than nothing and perhaps it could spark a better release later on.

SKIRTS AHOY
A set of warner brothers sports shorts (They were the king of shorts on sporting subjects during the 50's and 60's)
Three early cinemascope shorts by warners CONEY ISLAND HOLIDAY (which included a rollercoaster ride) SPORTSMAN'S HOLIDAY and ALOHA NUI

This would certainly seem the place to release early musicals like RIO RITA, GOOD NEWS, SUNNY, SALLY, THE DESERT SONG (all three versions maybe), HOLLYWOOD REVUE OF 1929, and Al Jolson's films from his early sound period.

All their Colleen Moore silents especially Lilac Time and early sound films from 1928-1929.

Thanks for the info.

One of the greatest tear-jerkers of all time. I read somewhere that Leo McCarey, after winning the Best Director Oscar for You Can't Take It With You, is said to have remarked that he won it for the wrong film that year. That he should have received it for Make Way For Tomorrow.

So Criterion comes to the rescue of a great film once again!

THE BOUNTY HUNTER (1954) with Randolph Scott would a great one. Having the option to see this one in 3-D (shot in 3-D, but released flat) would be amazing. But given the type of releases we have seen so far in this category, even a standard 2D release would still be good.

You're right about what McCarey said, but for the wrong film. He said that he shouldn't have won for THE AWFUL TRUTH. Frank Capra directed (and won for) YOU CAN"T TAKE IT WITH YOU.

I would like to second this, more Randolph Scott westerns are always welcome. I would also like to see the previously mentioned Jack Benny films The Horn Blows at Midnight and George Washington Slept Here, along with The Saint series with George Sanders, the Gordon Scott Tarzans and maybe some more of Robert Mitchum's RKO films(Blood on the Moon, Rachel and the Stranger, The Lusty Men, etc.).

There are some great titles, esp. the bold ones, but I'd love to see them as a classic retail release rather than an Archive disc. Some of them would nicely fit in a box set or two. (Bette Davis Vol. 4, another Bogey-Set or Cagney Vol. 2)

I thought WBs mentioned they had a hardy set in the works a few years back. I guess that's out the window. I would like to see Human Comedy get a legit release. One of my favorite films.

How about some of the less mainstream series films in sets. Like the Maisie,Mexican Spitfire etc. I would really like to see Perry Mason's, Falcon and Saint.Also a set of Wheeler and Woolsey would be nice.

Frank, you're right. WB did mention that a while back but I'd guess the economy put that on the back burner or abandoned as far as a pressed remastered release. A complete Hardy remastered set is one that I'd get regardless of price.

Warner has been mentioning most of these series in chats for several years. Personally I would prefer a retail release of these. It would be easy to do double features on the shorter features and the pricing would be much better. $20 a pop for Maisie Does the Rhumba or The Falcon Gets the Bird isn't going to move many consumers to buy these titles (especially if they are sold at TCM quality).

The Hardy series needs some sprucing up - the TCM prints are well worn. Mickey Rooney was said to have been involved with these DVDs...he turns 89 later this year. Let's hope his participation is secured before it is too late (assuming his work isn't already in the can).

I would think if they did put out any of these series in the Archive program they would be put in sets or bundles. Like the Barker tarzans were. That would make them more attractive to buyers .I'm a big fan of the series films of that era. I would be very interested in those type of films if they were packaged in sets.

I wonder if the Errol Flynn western set did well enough for Warners to do a Flynn war set of the remaining films he made in this genre?
I guess the best or most of the best are already out (OBJECTIVE BURMA, DIVE BOMBER, THE DAWN PATROL), but would love to have restored, DVD set of DESPERATE JOURNEY, NORTHERN PURSUIT, EDGE OF DARKNESS and UNCERTAIN GLORY.

I hope MARA MARU at least makes it to the archives...

I would like to see all of the above Flynn films released in a normal box set; but I especially would like a non-PD version of SANTA FE TRAIL to round out the set.

NEVER SAY GOODBYE, FOOTSTEPS IN THE DARK, CRY WOLF, ESCAPE ME NEVER. THE PERFECT SPECIMEN, THE SISTERS, ANOTHER DAWN, GREEN LIGHT, THAT FORSYTE WOMAN, CRY WOLF, SILVER RIVER are all dvd-worthy, and I'd love to see TOO MUCH, TOO SOON finally released on homevideo.

I'd love all of these released as multiple BOXSETS instead of being in the Archives. I find it highly insulting anyone would suggest to have Errols filmography be released to the pithy Archive Collection instead of a smashing pressed disc.



Hopefully the above WWII films will be released in their own boxset very soon. I've yet to purchase the Western collection and aim to do so withing the upcoming two weeks or sooner.
I take it I'm going to join ClassicFlix since they're carrying the Warner Archives. I see no justification on my part to purchase any of these, including Four's a Crowd. Way to fuck up and not consider it for a future Errol Flynn set Warners.

Oh and the Cary Grant films? Could've had a Signature Collection Volume II for him. So John Garfield and Stewart Granger are only "worthy" enough for the Archives while the highly overrated John Wayne gets full DVD's? Where's Robert Montgomery? Oh, blame the economic crisis then...

Groovy '70s, bizarre black comic thriller with Rock Hudson, Angie Dickinson, Roddy McDowall, Telly Savalas...directed by Roger Vadim, written-produced by Gene Roddenberry (!), small roles for Jimmy "Scotty" Doohan and William Campbell, a Lalo Schifrin score and a theme song performed by The Osmonds.

An utter time capsule and a great Warner Archives selection if I do say so myself ;)
