Suggested titles for Warner Archives future selections - Page 2

Re: Suggested titles for Warner Archives future selections

Well, I am only going to list some titles that are more obscure, as some of the more known titles or titles with Major stars/Directors I would rather have available retail rather than archive. In order to keep this list as short as possible, I have only listed films from the 60's and 70's (and you can see why a lower price is so important to me, I want so many films!!!) :

...tick... tick... tick...
7 Women
Alex in Wonderland
Biggest Bundle of Them All, The
Boys' Night Out
Bridge to the Sun
Bye Bye Braverman
Class of 44
Cool Ones, The
Dark at the Top of the Stairs
Day of the Evil Gun
Day They Robbed the Bank of England, the
Fortune and Men's Eyes
Going Home
Green Slime, The
Hearts of the West
Honeymoon Machine, the
Hook, The
Hot Millions
Ice Palace
Last of the Mobile Hot Shots
Last Run, The
Liquidator, The
Lisztomania
Maltese Bippy, The
Marlowe
Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter
Once You Kiss a Stranger
One Is a Lonely Number
Outfit, The
Pack, The
Pretty Maids All in a Row
Ring of Fire
Slither
Split, The
Strawberry Statement, The
Subject Was Roses, The
Subterraneans, The
Super Cops, The
Terminal Man, The
Travels With My Aunt
Two on a Guillotine
Walking Stick, The
Where the Spies Are
Where Were You When the Lights Went Out?
Wrath of God, The
Young Cassidy
Zandy's Bride

Re: Suggested titles for Warner Archives future selections

I second the Torchy Blane films.

What I want the most are all the Gary Cooper films under Warner’s control. Out of the those The Hanging Tree and Meet John Doe (I know this one is public domain) are the ones I would like the most and I'd pay any price for them .

Re: Suggested titles for Warner Archives future selections

Bureau Of Missing Persons - Bette Davis hated it (!) but it's a great example of a typical fast paced Warner Bros potboiler of the 1930s, and it has a fantastic cast too!

Also, Letty Lynton would be nice but I guess that is just wishful thinking ...

Re: Suggested titles for Warner Archives future selections

The Hanging Tree should of course be released in OAR Anamoriphic widescreen rather than the full screen version released on VHS. The restored version of Meet John Doe would be my second pick.

I would pay any price for a great-looking copy of MEET JOHN DOE too - one of my 20 favorite films and my favorite Capra.

Re: Suggested titles for Warner Archives future selections

OK- my choices:

From RKO-
the Mexican Spitfire series starring Lupe Velez and Leon Errol
The Affairs of Annabel and Annabel Takes A Trip
Five Came Back and its remake Back To Eternity
The French Line- the uncensored version with Jane Russell's extended version of "Lookin' For Trouble" with the closeups(!) and 'rap' on the opposite sex
The Enchanted Cottage
The Spiral Staircase
The Farmer's Daughter
(not sure if it's in the RKO library, may be part of the Selznick library)
The Unholy Wife
Second Chance
Born To Be Bad
Vivacious Lady
Our Betters
Love Affair
-a legit, restored version
Woman On The Beach
This Land Is Mine

From Warner Bros.:
You're A Big Boy Now
How Sweet It Is!
Dealing
Claudelle Inglish
Youngblood Hawke
Kisses For My President
Girl Of The Night
Between Two Worlds
Last Summer
- acquired thru Lorimar Prods.
Beyond The Forest- there may be a rights issue holding its release
Life With Father- a restored, legit version
One Way Passage and its remake 'Til We Meet Again- speaking of which, what about other Kay Francis titles?
Five Star Final- should really be in a Forbidden Hollywood set, but I'll take it on DVD any way!
Anthony Adverse
A Midsummer Night's Dream
Juarez

As for MGM..... there's so many, I'll get back to this thread later!

I thought only fragments of the 1930 version are known to exist?

TCM ran the 1930 version of Good News many years ago. The entire film exists except for the final reel containing the big football game. A simple title card filled in the missing plot point that (surprise) Tait College won the game. As far as I know, that missing reel has no musical numbers and the film plays quite nicely as is.

Re: Suggested titles for Warner Archives future selections

I am big fan of early widescreen films, so would love to have Strange Lady in Town, King Richard and the crusaders, and The Miracle (1959).

A Midsummer Night's Dream

Both the RKO titles above are in the Selznick library and Disney restored them several years ago. I am sure The Spiral Staircase made it to DVD

Also, A Midsummer Night's Dream is currently on DVD and it looks superb.

Jon, you're a guy after my own heart- picking three of my choices, and Lylah Clare, too!

Thanks for the clarity, John Morgan. So I can expect MGM/Sony/Fox to put them out- soon??

Hmmm, I wonder if they did do the Devils this route if you'd also get the commentary and other rumoured special features. To paraphrase a line from Robocop, I'd buy that for $19.97.

I would be so upset if Warner decided to throw the The Devils to the archives...but I definitely don't see them doing that...it would mean they think there is not enough sales potential for this title, and that is definitely not the case. The reason it isn't on DVD has nothing to do with potential low sales. Of all the possible titles which Warner could loan out to Criterion, this would be the most obvious one...in fact I hope that will be the case. When I first heard that Warner was talking to Criterion, the first thought that entered my head was "I bet they are talking about the Devils".

I would add Dealing, Last Summer, You're A Big Boy Now and No Blade of Grass to my list.

I am looking for the really rare stuff TCM hardly even shows, like NO LEAVE, NO LOVE with Van Johnson, and THE YOUNGEST PROFESSION featuring several star cameos in a film about autograph hounds.

Yes, I made a VHS copy of that broadcast, but I haven't watched it in years. COme to think of it, that might be something interesting to watch tonight.

I have to agree with you about THE DEVILS. And, I think you're right that it will eventually come out via WHV proper or Criterion. I think I momentarily forgot which product line I was making this list up for.

As for the other Russell titles, I would've thought they'd make for a great box set, with THE DEVILS, in the past. But, it seems that WHV is moving in a different direction and these are more likely happening as Archives releases now.

Obviously, I commend you on your additions to your list.

Charles,

You're blessed with exquisite taste. :-) I think we have spoken in the past here about LAST SUMMER and other similar titles.

Take a look at a past blog entry of mine. I think you will appreciate it:

Wow! Great site. And every Christmas I ask on this board about Perry's A Christmas Memory and why it isn't on DVD yet! I mean: Truman Capote, Geraldine Page, and Frank Perry together in the same film and it still hasn't been released? Come on!

No, it's still with MGM as it was a United Artists film. So that means there's no chance in hell it willl ever come out.

Yes, I was always hoping for a Russell boxset, in fact that would be a nice alternative if Criterion does not get it's hands on The Devils. There are titles that I left off of my list (Like Agatha, America, America, Freebie and the Bean, Legend of Lylah Clare) that I feel would be more likely to end up on the retail end of the business for various reasons. I don't want Warner abandoning it's retail catalog business due to our extensive lists

I really liked your site, we have very similar tastes in both Film & music. It's a shame that there aren't more Perry films on DVD, but at least Doc is coming out on DVD from MGM. Perry is one of those directors, (like Ritchie, and Friedkin) who seem to have lost their way in the 80's. I can't believe he ended up making films like Hello Again, but the 80's were definitely a different time and studio mindset than the 70's. I have never seen Ladybug, Ladybug or Man on a Swing and it is these types of filmshich get me most excited by a program such as Warner archives and the possibility that other studios will follow suit.

P.S.: I don't expect to ever see Urgh! A Music War on DVD due to rights hell, but thankfully I have other means of seeing it

Of course, I wish all of these films would get proper retail catalog releases, but this obviously won't happen. Aside from THE DEVILS, I feel like most of the films on my list are of that "orphan" type that seem to be earmarked for "Archives" status, but obviously all of this is entirely subjective. If the powers that be feel that LYLAH CLARE warrants a proper release, I don't think my listing it here under "Archives" requests will harm its chances. In other words, I'd say list away--maybe there's an Aldrich double feature set in the cards (...ALL THE MARBLES, LYLAH CLARE) if they show up enough times on people's requests lists.

Thanks for your compliments! I guess I will keep updating it then! Yes, good to see that DOC is coming out. I will note that on the site. Perry certainly is one of those filmmakers who fizzled. Maybe things would have been different if he and Eleanor had stayed together.
