Henry Hathaway's TRAIL OF THE LONEOSOME PINE March 30

Eureka Classics in the U.K. is releasing Paramount's earliest three-strip Technicolor film (1936), and one of the first color films to be shot outdoors instead of in a studio, in region 2:

The Trail of the Lonesome Pine | Eureka! Classics | Eureka Entertainment

Based on one of the most influential novels of the early part of the 20th century, Trail of the Lonesome Pine was a major film but is all but forgotten now. Several versions were made during the silent era. Hathaway's was considered the definitive version, and Paramount gave it everything they had.

Eureka always offers impeccable image quality, but where's the region 1 counterpart for this American classic?

I beg to differ; MoC usually comes up with the goods, but this is a 'Eureka Classics' (from their deal with Universal), and their Black Shield of Falworth was a cropped, indifferent transfer. It might be fantastic, but it shouldn't be taken as read.

I thought Black Shield of Falworth was shot in both flat and CinemaScope versions, and Universal only had a decent looking video master of the non-CinemaScope version?

No, it's definitely cropped, when I saw it for myself, it was plain.

Oh dear. I couldn't believe that a DVD company could be that stupid.

They should've just released something else.

Was hoping this would be part of the MOC series, but I'll continue to hold out for a proper R1 release...

I hadn't heard about The Black Shield of Falworth. Sounds like a film I should see.

The Trail of the Lonesome Pine is not a widescreen film so there can't be confusion with its aspect ratio. It was made in 1936, before widescreen came to pass. If the print looks as good as the TCM airing a few years ago there'll be no complaints from me about its picture quality.

Your comment was in reference to the 'impeccable image quality' of Eureka discs, my reply was that it was not always the case, the fact that I referenced a widescreen film is neither here nor there. The caveat still applies.

No worries, John.
I understood your point.
Pity about The Black Shield of Falworth as it sounds like a film I would like to see if it were properly transferred.

Black Shield of Falworth notwithstanding, I'm sure you agree Eureka has done a fine job on so many films I hardly think Trail of the Lonesome Pine is in any danger.
