Should I put subwoofer behind projection screen?

My husband and I are building a theater in our basement. The walls are framed, and we are moving on to the ceiling. I am going to have a 4' wide soffit all the way around the perimeter of the room, with a starfied ceiling in the middle. Should I make the soffit 5' or maybe even 6' at the front of the room to allow for the front speakers, subwoofer, and the screen? I ultimately want the ceiling soffit to be the same all the way around the room.

Okay, i'm probably missing something here. But why are you putting your subwoofer in the soffit? I understand the screen, but why the speakers?

What's the reason for the soffit?
You're putting the front speakers and sub in the soffit?
Something sounds very strange here.

Re: Should I put subwoofer behind projection screen?

Everyone, has a different way of interpreting the English language. I have read your posts a number of times and have reached the conclusion that the soffits are for decorative purposes around the perimeter of your basement and that the projector screen will either be in front or housed in the front soffit. Your appear to be asking two different questions:

1. From a design stand point how wide should my Soffets be 4', 5' or 6'?

Answer: That is up to you.

2. Is it OK to locate a Subwoofer behind a projector screen?

Answer: I will let a member who has a projector system and screen answer that one.

Okay thanks for clarifying that Bill. I know that there are screens that allow speakers to be placed behind them. However, i don't think subwoofers are in the same league because of the low frequency. I would suggest placing the subwoofer on the floor to the side or below the screen.

Re: Should I put subwoofer behind projection screen?

There's an old trick to determine the best place of a subwoofer (from a technical point of view; aesthetical might be a different matter ).

Place the sub in your #1 chair. Let it play some great bass. Walk around in the room using your ears or a sound meter to determine where the bass sounds best (loudest). That place is the best place for the sub.

NB. Behind the screen probably won't harm the transmission of low bass frequencies too much (unless it's a really closed space), but I wouldn't advice it (unless it's the place coming up from the method described above. )

Re: Should I put subwoofer behind projection screen?

Many people with false front walls and AT screens have their subwoofers behind the screen. In fact, it's the preferred location for such a setup.
