Are you using IE, Firefox or Opera? I am using XP Firefox with no issues using the javachat. After you download the applet it does take a bit for the interface to load.

I also tried it in Opera and IE with no problems.

I am having problems. I just wanted to ask if Shadow on the Wall (1950) would ever get a proper release I have discussed this with the film's director and he said he would record a commentary for the film.

I have never done online chats before. I use Mozilla Firefox, that much I can tell you. I went to check out mIRC, but there is a fee to use them.

Maybe international members are being kept out of this chat so we won't here all the bad news that we have been fearing. For what I have heard over the last day or so, it sounds a lot like this is going to be the future of classics on DVD. It will be funny just seeing old Warner product sitting on the shelves up here in Canada. Because we won't be seeing anything new. We might see repackaging of old titles to trick people into purchasing the stuff, but we know better.

Like I said I am using Firefox with XP and no problems using the javachat. Maybe you have something set in your browser that doesn't allow java. In your perferences make sure that you have enable java turned on.

There is a text area at the bottom that you type your question into. It is right above the change nick, the public room information. Your cursor should be flashing in the text area input box.

I had the same problem with Scaramouche. Still hasn't been fixed on my end. I can wait until the deluge ends.

BTW, If WB is reading, the site is great but the screen shifting to match where my cursor is makes for awkward shopping.

I'm sure what ever transpires today, there will be more wonderful classic Warners on release that us Internationals CAN buy.

I just hooked up an old computer that I used last week to view the fox chat. Since I will not bother asking questions, can someone ask the following questions for me.

1. Is there still going to be a second Lon Chaney collection. This was promised several years about but nothing as been said yet.

2. Is there going to be a silent collection out on regular DVD. King Vidor or Rex Ingram films would be nice to start with.

3. Are the three "Showboat" films coming.

4. Are there plans to allow Canadians to order the exclusive titles, maybe through a Canadian online store, or even TCM.

5. If not, will Warner's try to offer Canadians something in return for having been cut out of this project. I think that something should be done.

Well, I certainly feel better hearing that the DVD-Rs are of the highest quality, and more reliable than home use discs. Also that they are prepared to stand behind them.

Additionally, the comments that this will not affect future standard releases. I assumed this to be true after noting a large number of omissions from the first batch of titles, including the silents & Jean Harlow titles to name a few.

Who than in their right mind would spend $20 on a barebones dvd-r with generic packaging only to possibly have the same title later appear in retail at a cost efficient msrp and properly pressed and presented?

Charging double the retail cost for burned media with zero features over Warners usual store bought product just seems like an awfully bold move and perhaps not the brightest idea... especially considering the above quote which is sure to turn people, like myself, right off this concept.

These discs are way overpriced no matter how you swing it... Also their website is horrible and takes forever to load; I gave up even browsing the selection. It would be nice to see some of the Marion Davies talkies released however. And Warners untapped theatrical animation library, especially their MGM shorts...

They may be bare bones and too high in price but it may be the only way I'll ever get Bright Leaf 1950 and some of their other Gary Cooper titles. I don't think that the two super rare Cary Grant titles would have ever been released in regular format either in Crisis 1950 and Room for One More 1952. There are probably some titles it is best to buy in this way and other one's that it might be best to hold off for a box set release. For instance, I may hold off on buying Gable/Crawford in hopes of a box set release on them.

Does Warner own international rights on their RKO and Allied Artist titles?

These are the titles I'm worried about not being able to order because of being overseas. I'm pretty certain they own world wide rights on W.B. and MGM films.

For people having troubles with the website, I received this email after being unable to add The Command to my wishlist:


The site has too much unnecessary Adobe Flash which just slows the whole thing down.

This link should sort the titles by popularity.

I don't think they have the worldwide rights for these titles (RKO and Allied Artists)... but, we'll find a way to get those titles anyway, don't we? And maybe Warner surprises us and those titles will be available nevertheless. I keep my fingers crossed.

I hope, they will make the website easier to navigate. I don't want to browse through the whole collection in order to find the new releases for example.

Yeah I hope so, but it is a hassle.

They will be all over eBay in a few weeks, but most likely at inflated prices.

I strongly believe that they should have been doing this for some time now. It was discussed 3-4 years ago in Home Media Retailing and nothing came about. Every studio has titles that would probably not sell well enough to make full pressings and that stores would be interested in taking up shelf space. This is a great thing, and I really hope the other studios follow. This will surely generate much revenue for Warner from their assets! The one that hit me in the face is a childhood favorite, Captain Sinbad, I've been wanting that film for years!

In one of the articles today Mr Feltenstein said that they now have the technology to make this happen.

This suggest to me that they have been trying to work out a method to manufacture discs that is cheaper than pressing them, but more reliable than simple DVD-R burns.

It seems they have finally settled on a technology that can do that cost effectively.

Warner chat said that "a selection of Ginger Roger comedies" is coming.

I think Warner doesn't control RKO titles in other regions besides US and Canada. Universal owns them in UK.

My guess is that there's a connection to HP's DVD manufactured-on-demand service announced a year ago in January. The article below says that Sony will be the first major studio using the service, which obviously hasn't yet come about:
