Re: Warner Archive Discussion Thread

Thanks, Peter, for the TARZAN research. I also really like the two Jock Mahoney films, especially TARZAN'S THREE CHALLENGES.

Some folks here have listed titles that they would like to see on DVD. I'll list a few of my own:

BLOOD AND ROSES (1960)
TIME LOST AND TIME REMEMBERED (aka WE WERE HAPPY HERE) (1965)
THE LIGHT FANTASTIC (1966)
WHO KILLED TEDDY BEAR (1965) (region 1)
HOMICIDAL (1961) anamorphic
SWORD OF LANCELOT (1963) widescreen
THE ALFRED HITCHCOCK HOUR (hour-long TV episodes)
THE MANY LOVES OF DOBIE GILLIS (cult TV series)
THE HOUSE THAT SCREAMED (1970) region 1, uncut
UNHOLY ROLLERS (1972) with original rock 'n' roll soundtrack
FOR MEN ONLY (aka THE TALL LIE) (1952) fraternity expose
RED SKY AT MORNING (1971)
THIEF OF BAGHDAD (1961) anamorphic (Steve Reeves version)
KING RICHARD AND THE CRUSADERS (1955?)
WASN'T THAT A TIME (1982?) great documentary about the Weavers
and others too numerous to mention

I believe that the films people are listing here are not only films they'd like to see on DVD but, you know, films released by Warner Bros., being this thread is about Warners and the Archive Collection. I don't know that any of the films on your list are Warners - certainly I see a lot of Universal and Columbia titles. Furthermore, there are three volumes of the Hitchcock Hour available in region two with excellent transfers, there's an anamorphic Homicidal in region 2, and a Who Killed Teddy Bear in region 2.

Re: Warner Archive Discussion Thread

Okay, I'll restrict myself to Warner wants, plus a few pre-1978 MGM releases:

TWO ON A GUILLOTINE
THE COUCH (1962)
THIEF OF BAGHDAD (1961)
PHANTOM OF THE RUE MORGUE
STORY OF MANKIND
HERCULES and HERCULES UNCHAINED
GIRL OF THE NIGHT
THE MASK (1961)
SWEET REVENGE (MGM, 1977ish)
OUR TIME (1974)
THE SLAVE (aka SON OF SPARTACUS)
MORGAN THE PIRATE
WICKED, WICKED (1973)
TARZAN'S THREE CHALLENGES
TARZAN'S FIGHT FOR LIFE
THE MINOTAUR (was United Artists, so that one might be at Fox?)
THE FIREBALL (1950) originally Fox, but released on Warner VHS circa 1996
another time, I'll consider Allied Artists and pre-1978 MGM titles

Actually that's great for those that want to buy five titles at 25% off because you can add four other titles to your order along with that boxset.

Re: Warner Archive Discussion Thread

I bought the Tarzan set and 2 new titles and got the 25% off and free shipping because the order went over $60.

Re: Warner Archive Discussion Thread

I wish I could have found 4 more titles with the Tarzan set. There's just not much (so far) that I'm interested in but if WB can get some Paramount titles in the archive offers, I might be buying a couple more.

Re: Warner Archive Discussion Thread

I'm watching an old vhs of Naughty Marietta now, I think this will probably be a candidate for the archives. It's a shame that the widescreen titles necessitate a new telecine in order to make an anamorphic DVD, but the academy titles don't get new telecines. I imagine any DVD of Marietta will come from the same master that was used for this very old VHS, which is a shame.

Highly unlikely, since Warner and Paramount are two competing companies. But if this goes well, maybe Paramount will have their own version of the Archive series.

Hopefully not, I'd rather see them license out their titles to Criterion & Legend.

Didn't Warners say in the last chat that they are still working on restoring/getting hold of good copies of the MacDonald/Eddy films (including Naughty Marietta, I suppose). Tell me there's still hope that this set will appear as a "regular" release?

Re: Warner Archive Discussion Thread

I'd be surprised if a Nelson-MacDonald box set was not forthcoming from WB. I read in the last chat that WB was working on restoration of these films. Although I am surprised WB did not release a Lana Turner box set. Instead many of her films went in the the Archive collection including JOHNNY EAGER.

If anybody here (and there must be someone) has bought "Mr. Lucky", how's the quality? The online sample looked awfully dark to me. Didn't stop me from buying other things, though.

Re: Warner Archive Discussion Thread

Given some of the titles that have already found their way into the Archives, I'm starting to think that all bets are off regarding wide releases. Not to say that there won't be any, just that it's getting more challenging to predict which titles might qualify. With this latest move towards group pricing for the Barker Tarzans, Warner has demonstrated that a natural grouping doesn't automatically translate to box set.

Well that's fine and good, but it's not for me because I can't find 4 other titles I want! lol.

I added a couple in to get to $60, that triggered the free s/h. Thanks to the HTF member who mentioned that above.

Re: Warner Archive Discussion Thread

After all these weeks of me wondering how I can watch the archive discs without seeing that weird effect wherever there is red, I finally found two ways.

One, When I watch movies on my x-box 360, hooked up through component video on my hdtv, no problems.
But...if I put it in my ps3 hooked up with hdmi....the weird effect.

And downstairs on my rear projection hdtv...this tv does either 480p or 1080i...its an oldie. so if I watch a movie on progressive scan through component...the problems...same problem if I turn off the progressive scan but still watch it there.

Now...if I hook up an old dvd player through basic s-video...no problems. I can still get the 16:9, but my contention is that it won't look as clear as component.
I wonder why the 360 component hookup is ok. Would it have to do with the kind of cables used? I am using older monster red green blue cables for video and an optical for audio.
Would there be a better cable to get rid of this?

I at first thought it was the players, but having tried two through component a mitsu 8040 with farouda chip and now an lg lry-517 using same component cables i am getting the same effect.
Both players with sd cables have no issue.
Any recommendations on cable usage? Would these movies look terrible through s-video? I don't think it is the tv but could it be due to the fact that it is an older hd unit?

The best solution would be to get better discs, but I've been talking with the lady at WB and she says that they are working on the issue. But my contention is that if they are in fact working on it, why are even the newest archive discs still having this issue.

And to top it off, the man from allied vaughn is no longer calling me back when I request an update from him. So I don;t know. In some ways I feel like a rube for buying what is now around 23 archive titles and having to watch them in with sd cables when I have good quality component cables to at least get me 480p.

What are you guys watching the dvd's on? How about the people who are NOT experiencing this annoying effect.
It was most terrible on Big Circus as so much of that movie is red.

1) Call Warner
2) Complain you have a defective disc
3) Demand a refund.

Re: Warner Archive Discussion Thread

If the Archives do anything, it shows which classic films have been restored and which haven't. It's a little surprising that Warners is still dealing with video masters for so many classic 1930s and 40s films like "The Big House," "On Borrowed Time," "Three Comrades," "Johnny Eager," "The Pride of the Marines," "Mr. Lucky," etc. I do hope these films are still on the radar for a true restoration down the line. I would double dip if there were to release a restored version of each. Hopefully they release restored versions as general releases.

Re: Warner Archive Discussion Thread

A few miscellaneous MGM (pre-1978) and Allied Artists titles I'd like to see:

THE SUBTERRANEANS
RING OF FIRE (1961)
PRETTY MAIDS ALL IN A ROW
FORTUNE AND MEN'S EYES
SWEET REVENGE (1976)
WICKED, WICKED (1973)
TARZAN'S THREE CHALLENGES
MACABRE
CALTIKI, THE IMMORTAL MONSTER
THE HYPNOTIC EYE
CONFESSIONS OF AN OPIUM EATER (aka SOULS FOR SALE)
THE BLACK ZOO
THE DESERT RAVEN (1965)

Also, many of the early 1960's sword and sandal epics (some starring Steve Reeves) have been released by Warner on Spanish DVDs. Particular titles I'd like to see from this library:

THIEF OF BAGHDAD (1961)
MORGAN THE PIRATE
THE MINOTAUR
THE SLAVE (aka SON OF SPARTACUS)
GIANT OF MARATHON

Hi Jobla,

Warner has pre-1986 MGM titles, not just pre-1978.

Re: Warner Archive Discussion Thread

I thought WB shop had got the bugs out of their website. I put an order in on the 7th . I received a confirmation e mail the same day. Today i checked my account on the WB website and there is no record. I called customer support and they say they have no record of my order. I can't reorder till tomorrow because they claim it still may go through after five days. I told them i used a discount code and they told me they would honor it when i reordered. I hope so,but we shall see. This p me off.

Re: Warner Archive Discussion Thread

Yeah, we can dream. But is there any evidence -- even a verbal suggestion -- that they are interested in revisiting these films outside the archive product? We can blame the 'economic downturn' for the seemingly sudden drop in classic dvd releases, but i'm betting the archive is what it is and will be taking over from true dvd releases for all but the most prized products, ie 3rd generation releases of the French Connection, 40th anniversary edition etc.

I just checked and my order from the 7th isn't on the site either. I'll give them a few days before I complain. I've placed four orders so far, and this will be the third time I've had to call them. And it's not like I'm prone to complaining; I don't think I've ever called another e-tailer before in my life.

Re: Warner Archive Discussion Thread

I called back tonight and the customer service rep i talked to told me she wouldn't put in a new order till they check deeper into my May 7th order. Ok this is lame. Not too sure who is in charge over there ,but they really need to work on the online ordering process. It is screwed up. This is my fourth order and i've had issues with three of them. Rarely have i had an issue with other online stores. And it's not the product i've had problems with .

Re: Warner Archive Discussion Thread

I had the same problem on the May7. I called Warner yesterday and the sales representative say she would have her supervisor call me back . Unfortunately that never happened. I checked with my credit card company and I have a Warner charge pending. I called this morning and they said again they would call me back. The only party involved without any information is Warner. This was my fourth order and only problem.
Great Day

Re: Warner Archive Discussion Thread

I ordered the Barker Tarzan's online last week on 05/07 . I received the conf e-mail right after ordering but my credit card co also still has the charge pending. Maybe the archive store's doing more business than their staff can manage in a timely manner? What's the average time from placing an order and receiving in in the mail for most here?

Re: Warner Archive Discussion Thread

There should be an estimated delivery date in your confirmation email. Mine says 5/14, so I'm not going to hassle them until Thursday. My order doesn't show up on wbshop.com, but who knows -- that might just be a website issue and the discs might arrive on time. They don't charge you until the discs ship.

Re: Warner Archive Discussion Thread

Actually they do charge you before they ship. On the 3 orders i have put in ,before this one, they have charged my card well before they shipped . A week before in two cases. I was told at the time, by customer service ,that was the norm for them. They are the only online store i deal with who does that. But i can cope with that. My problem is they have no record of my order even though i have a confirmation email and order number. So they tell me they can't put in a new order till they can find my old one so they don't double ship.
I don't want to deal with a double charge either. They are supposed to get back to me this morning. Who knows.
