Sony KDS-60A202: Picture goes in and out

To start let me say I've been happy with this TV. The picture is great and the inputs are flexible.

The only problem I have is that lately the picture goes in and out but the sound is uneffected. At start up the power LED blinks until the audio/video kicks in. The picture looks fine but every couple of minutes the screen goes black for about 60 seconds the comes back. It will continue like this for about 90 minutes then it will stay on just fine.

I bought my set Aug 2007. The set sees above average vibration from kid traffic (wresteling, knee hockey, etc...) All my equipment is protected by a surge protector. I've seen seven others with the same problem but no solutions.

Lately, it seems, Sony has been producing TVs that fail within a couple of years. My only suggestion is to count the number of times the LED blinks and google that to see if you can get an indication of what the problem is. Sony TVs work great, WHEN they work. I have one a 60" XBR2 SXRD and Sony just replaced the optical block due to a defect in the production of it. Not sure if you have a warranty on this or not but if you do, by all means use it. If not, call Sony with a description of the problem and the number of times the LED blinks and see what they say.

In the future for all TV purchases, I highly recommend getting the extended warranty.

I found the fix. The problem was the lamp, even though the lamp light never came on. I broke down and called in a repair man. He popped in a new lamp and that did the trick. It's been in for a week now with no problems.

He was going to charge me $380 for parts and labor so I told him to keep the lamp. I did have to pay $80 just for comming out but at least I knew how to fix it. "The Parts Store" sold the lamp, and I mean just the bulb, for $139. "You Tube" had a video showing how to swap out the bulb and housing. It was easy. Anyone who can work a screwdriver can do it.

A little late but this is a classic lamp failure. It's also common when using aftermarket lamps. Hopefully the one you received won't start doing it in a few months. If it does, it's just the lamp and buying a Factory lamp would then be advisable.
