Merlin US Premiere announced

Primetime 2008 - Merlin - NBC Site

This is great news. Merlin, which has already aired on the BBC, is one of those rare finds that thankfully is being left in tact. The first season of Merlin is great stuff - great effects, interesting story, good acting. Let me put it this way, if "Heroes" had been 1/2 as good as "Merlin" this year, we'd be singing it's praises.

Good combination of humor, action, hot women, solid stories.

Re: Merlin US Premiere announced

I shall judge for myself, as yours is the first comment I've read that spoke of Merlin as being anything other than utter crap. I'll definately watch the show, though, so I can see it myself.

Nice to see Anthony Head there; haven't seen him over here since Buffy ended so I'll at least take a look.

Teenybopper Merlin? No Thanks.

Re: Merlin US Premiere announced

Didn't we already have a multi-part miniseries of the Merlin story?

Re: Merlin US Premiere announced

The BBC series is a lot more innovative then you'd think, and it definitely isn't what I'd call teeny-bopper; it's how Merlin met Aurthur and became the magician he ended up as within the mythos.

Imagine it a bit like Smallville... but better.

I really enjoyed this series, and it will be good to see it outside of a web browser.

Re: Merlin US Premiere announced

First episode aired on NBC last night.

The first episode isn't my favorite, but it's solid. And the series really gets rolling as it goes. But the first episode does introduce the characters well, and some of the presentation is VERY good. Plus, I liked the characters right off the bat.

One critic's take on this. Tom Shales of the Washington Post:

Quote:

Better Title for Sleepy 'Merlin': The Snore & the Sorcerer

The not-so-magical return of Merlin the magician to NBC prime time probably owes less to the ratings earned by the network's "Merlin" miniseries in 1998 than to subsequent gargantuan global grosses for movies based on J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" books.

Re: Merlin US Premiere announced

I have seen the entire first season of Merlin, and I think that it is a GREAT show! It does remind me of the Smallville show. I am looking forward to the second season. I am glad that NBC picked it up.

That's the good thing of it.. for those of us that like it, we are 100% guaranteed a full second season (and rumored a third) because it's popular in the UK. I do think it gets stronger as it goes, but I like the concept a good deal.

Re: Merlin US Premiere announced

Didn't NBC co-produce this with the BBC? That's why it's being shown on NBC instead of Sci-Fi or BBC America.

Re: Merlin US Premiere announced

No, they didn't. They did buy the US distribution rights, that's it. They were not part of the production costs. They have the option on the second season, which goes forward with or without them

Re: Merlin US Premiere announced

Well, the US Open Golf tournament on Sunday screwed up the scheduling back here in the East for Episodes 1 and 2 so I missed the last part of Episode 2. NBC did me a favor. Luckily I checked before trying to watch this so I didn't waste a little over an hour and a half just to be left hanging. I'm removing this from my DVR queue list since they didn't have the courtesy to air it again on another night (Episode 2). Yes, I know I can "watch" it online, but I prefer not to as it's nowhere as good as watching it on my big screen, etc.

If someone can convince me that this is a "must have" series I'll wait for it to come out on Blu-ray. Otherwise, there's far to much video on my plate for me to worry about this one.

Season 2 is off to a great start.  It's kind of sad that it gets slotted the way it does in the US; I'm going to have to find Bluerays of Season 1, because really.. the cast in this is good, the stories are fun, and this season is a great start.

Truly, I was looking forward to this premiere as much as any this season.

I laughingly joke if it weren't for a good proxy so I could watch online (BTW, thanks to StephenFry last year for posting one on his twitter to watch BBC/Channel4 live, and doing it again this year.. good bit! thanks!) I'd miss some of the favorite shows of last season.. Merlin, Satisfaction (Australia), Secret Diary of a Call Girl (boo!  delayed :( ) , Biggest Loser Australia (the fact that it's been in HD for 4 seasons and the US version isn't is terrible.. and it's such a better version of the show it's sad), and new Top Gear?

The world gets smaller every year, as we get to see what comes out around the globe.  :)

The special effects in this show really make it for me.  It has that nostalgic combination of good makeup and CGI and it blends it so well.. the troll wife double-header gets a big

Great stuff.  Lots of fun, and I love the actors they get for this.

I was waiting for a witchfinder episode.  Great stuff, some good callbacks to BlackAdder as well.

What I really like about this show is how brisk the pacing is.

And Morgana begins her curve to the dark side.  Great stuff!  The actors really flesh out their roles, and Colin is exceptional in his.

Season 2 in the UK ended.. incredible, incredible finish.  I'm hoping they do a US run also, but I'll definitely snag the DVDs!

Been approved for a 5 season run minimum from BBC, so at least 3 more seasons!  Good news for all, IMHO.  Second season, airing on SyFy now is quite good.

Wonderful news!  I knew a 3rd season had been approved and was shooting, but hadn't heard anything about an early renewal for a 4th & 5th season.  Fantastic show!  Enjoyed catching the season 2 marathon on SyFy this past Friday, capping with the 2nd season finale.

The most recent season has been one of it's strongest.  Just as long as they get Angel Coulby more screen time; the recent turn in the series hurts some with that.   It's great camp entertainment.
