DVD player to HDTV component help.

I’m not sure if this is the right place for this or not but her goes.

I have a Panasonic DVD recorder DMR E55 and a LG 40 inch HDTV. The DVD player has been connected to the TV by composite cables and everything is fine but I wanted to upgrade to component for a better picture.

When I hooked it up with the component cables the picture with a wide screen DVD move playing had black bars not just on the top and bottom, but on the sides as well. With the composite cables it only had the bars on the top and bottom. The TV is set to let the device pick the screen size. I can stretch the screen to fit but it looks bad and I don’t want to have to change the settings of the TV all the time. My Xbox connected by hdmi plays DVD’s with just the bars on the top and bottom but it’s too loud to use all the time.

Is there anyway to have the DVD player play a widescreen DVD using the component cables but without the bars on the side?

Re: DVD player to HDTV component help.

Basically, what you have here is a dvd that's non-anamorphic (letterboxed). An anamorphic dvd presentation (enhanced for 16:9) would present the image in a manner to take advantage of your widescreen tv. Studios released non-anamorphic presentations a good bit in the early days of dvd because widescreen tvs were not as common place at dvds launch. And sometimes even today, to the dissatisfaction of many of us here on HTF, they still release titles this way. It is rare. What you've already tried is pretty much all you can do to get rid of the bars on the sides. You could zoom the image, but, it's not desirable. That's if your player even has the function. You could try seeing if the title/titles you're having trouble with have been re-released in anamorphic presentations. I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help. Maybe someone else on the forum may have a solution.

I tried 2 DVD's, Body of Lies. Its like 2 months old. I also tried The Kingdom. Are those known to do that.

No, those 2 movie dvds should not be doing that. Is your dvd player and tv set for 16:9 widescreen aspect display?

Re: DVD player to HDTV component help.

yes the dvd player is set for 16:9 but it did not change anything. Even without a dvd in the player the welcome screen is letterboxed on all sides but only with the component cables.

Re: DVD player to HDTV component help.

Please confirm:
- DVD setup menu, TV Screen/TV type, is set to "Aspect 16:9 & 480p" ??
If not exactly what is selected?
- does picture look OK or not if you force TV to "16:9" instead of "set by program"? Does it fill screen, everything in proportion, or are objects wider than they should be?

With the bars on all 4 sides, is the picture itself in proper proportion or do objects look too tall/skinny? It's really weird for letterbox on all 4 sides to be in proportion, unless your DVD player is in fact set to 4:3 and you are mistaken in it being set to 16:9.
