Question About How To Get 5.1 With My System

Hi, these seem to be very helpful forums so I was wondering if someone can help me.

I have a Westinghouse HDTV and a Sony HT-SS2000 "5.1. Home Theater System" (this come with all 6 speakers and receiver all in the box), and I have Sony Playstation 3 connected with digital optical sound cable to the receiver, and also a HD cable box connected to receiver through the second digital optical sound input (in the SAT input). My family watches DVDs on the PS3, and my brother plays video games, and we all watch cable TV. But the problem is the maximum sound type we seem to get is always either "Dolby Digital 3/2.1" or "Dolby Digital 2/1" (it says this on the front of the receiver display, on the little picture it also only shows 3 speakers being used always- "SW", "L", and "R" instead of all speakers). I know that some TV shows we are watching and DVDs and games we try are supposed to be 5.1, but the receiver is not automatically making it so. I checked all connections and all speakers are connected right. I just want to know how I can make my receiver put the sound automatically at the right level, e.g. 5.1. Or maybe my system is faulty?

I am sure it is something I am doing wrong. Sorry if this is a dumb question, I am not very good with the technical side of things. And thank you for any help.

Re: Question About How To Get 5.1 With My System

Some receivers have to be specifically set to use all speaker; but yours doesn't seem to be one of them.

Did you permorm this step: (pg-24) "Before using the receiver for the first time, initialize the receiver by performing the following procedure ...(turn on; hold down power button for 5 secs)"?

Also, your receiver has easy, remote control access, to "Sound Field" settings. Make sure you aren't on 2CH.

When you perform auto-calibration, do all speakers emit a sound?

3/2.1 is the same as 5.1

2/1 is the same as 2.1

5.1 and 2.1 are both Dolby Digital. If a show is in DD, it could be either of those formats. It's not necessarily 5.1 unless it shows 5.1.

When you have something that shows 3/2.1, is sound coming out of all 5 speakers? If so, you're good.

If not, are you sure all the speakers are correctly hooked up? Do you have the ability to play test tones with that receiver?

After you told me about this step, I performed it (to clear settings back to factory defaults) and then I performed the sound field clearance also, and now all six of the speakers seem to be engaged when I am using a Dolby Digital 5.1 source. I can hear sound out of every speaker and the little picture on the front of the receiver shows all 6 in use. I don't know what setting I had it on before, but I guess a simple clearing of settings fixed it.

Thanks to both you guys for your help, I appreciate it.

I did not know that, I guess it's obvious when you think to add the numbers up.
Thanks again, Kevin.
