bar mitzvah vs bat mitzvah

Shoot, I think I bought a wrong card... A friend of mine's daughter is having a bat mitzvah, which I thought was the same as a bar, but it seems that boys celebrate a bar m. vs a bat m. for a daughter. Oops, my card I was getting them because I can't make it specifically says "bar". Oops, do you think I should return it and look for a bat m. one? The celebration is this saturday, so time is running out!

What Michael said. Or, to put it another way, if you bought a card that said "Happy Birthday Nephew" for your niece's birthday, you'd exchange it, right? Same concept.

Joe makes an excellent point. "bar" means "son of" and "bat" means "daughter of". The recipient would never say anything, but if you know better, exchanging the card saves you from knowing that they know you bought the wrong card.

Just be glad it's not two kids going through one, like twins I went to school with. Finding pluralized cards are near impossibile.

Feh !

Cross out the 'r' and write in a 't'.
Write a message to the effect that you made a 'goyem' mistake but you learned something, also write in there 'Mazel Tov!' Cram some $ in there and seal it up.
Got all the things us Jewish folks appreciate: some self deprecating humor, a bit of learning on your part and a 'Mazl Tov' It's a winner

Talk about lack of selection, the local Shop Rite grocery store, there are about 3 cards related to a Bar Mitzvah and a whopping 1 related to a Bat Mitzvah, so bought the Hallmark card and exchanged them.

Actually, for twins, it's B'nai Mitzvah for twin boys or a boy and girl and B'not Mitzvah for twin girls. Dunno if there are combo cards though. That seems a little tacky to me.

Can a person ever have more than one bar/bat mitzvah (like they might have multiple birthday parties)?

If the octomom were Jewish, what would the event for her kids be called?

Now that there was one on Hell's Kitchen, enquiring minds want to know.

A bar mitzvah itself is a ceremony where you demonstrate that you are ready to become a Jewish adult and accept those responsibilities. Seems a bit redundant to do that more than once. I don't see why someone would have multiple bar or bat mitzvahs but multiple parties afterward I guess could happen.

As for octomom, if the children are all boys or a mix of boys and girls, it would be called a b'nai ("sons of" or "children of") mitzvah. If all daughters, then it would be a b'not ("daughters of") mitzvah.
