let me start by saying i dont have the budget to buy a new setup, so i am trying to find the best solution, spending the least amount of cash for now.

Issue 1: DVD player needs to be replaced
Issue 2: A/V Receiver has intermitant sound issue on startup.
Issue 3: A/V Receiver has only 2 component inputs, 1 component out
Issue 4: A/V Receiver has no HDMI
Issue 5: TV is old, has only one 1080i and one 480p input, no HDMI
Issue 6: TV component input does not auto sense

Wants: Media extender / player. at a min, want to watch dvds from HDD, play music over the network. Not have to switch inputs on the TV
Pluses: Watch streaming over the web, web browsing etc, blueray

Knowns: new TV is not in the budget

Q1: is there a reasonably priced receiver (maybe even an older model) which will convert 480p to 1080i? this solves the A/V issues near term, and the TV input switching
Q2: of the newer HDMI output receivers, can they output 1080i, use an HDMI to DVI cable, and then a DVI to component adapter to the TV? This would allow me to get a new model A/V Receiver which i could use with a new TV in the future.
Q3: any other suggestions?
