contrast suggestions/advice

just got a new 37 inch LG and am trying to calibrate it using avia. when adjusting the contrast i can NOT get one of the black bars that scrolls across the screen to blend or fade in to the black background.

no matter if i adjust the contrast to the lowest or highest level neither bar disappears. they change shades a bit but both are clearly visible no matter how much i change it.

as it is for now i have it set at 50, right in the middle and have calibrated brightness, sharpness, color and hue using the middle ground of contrast as a base to calibrate the other settings.

my question is that i'm not sure if the contrast is set properly seeing that i can't get one of the moving bars to blend in with the background so i'm looking for suggestions and advice. thanks very much.

Re: contrast suggestions/advice

Don't forget, the "brightness" and "contrast" controls (affecting white level and black level, respectively) are interactive. When you change one you alter the other, so you generally need to go back and forth several times between the two to fine-tune your settings. Also remember that LCD TVs, even the best of them, do not produce the kind of true blacks that a CRT set (either projection or direct-view) does.

And the fact remains that all calibration discs, test patterns and procedures were originally designed for CRTs. Even the latest and greatest HD versions designed for digital TVs still carry some of that analog heritage with them, because they need to be applied to such a wide variety of sets. It is entirely possible that your set isn't capable of making both bars disappear.

Or you may need to pick the contrast level closet to that point, then tweek the brightness, retweak the contrast, rinse, repeat, until you have both settings dialed-in perfectly.
