Star Trek TOS studio models used for filming-photos

For the many Star Trek fans on this forum, if you're like me and you're into the original props and models used for filming, you might be interested in this site: Category: Star Trek Selections

There is a series of 94 images of the original model in various states of disassembly during the most current restoration of the model for The Smithsonian. This work was controversial. You can see, from what's left of the original paint job, how it used to look.

Ed Miarecki is a professional model maker and has done a lot of work for the film industry, but I think his vision for the restoration went wrong. But that's my opinion.

There's also images of the original Klingon Battlecruiser and Tholian ship too.

Thanks for the link Nelson. Very cool. I will have to give it a good look over, after work!

Enjoy it Rick! I had seen some similar photos from another source of the same disassembly period and was amazed how much was wood, it pretty much is all wood! Except the saucer section of course.

Oh. My. God.

I suspect most people wont realize just how much of a treasure these pictures are. I can assure you though, the modeling community has just collectively wet its pants.

Thanks so much Nelson.

Re: Star Trek TOS studio models used for filming-photos

You're welcome Zack. Yeah, I saw another set of images from the same session about a year ago. They were also shared on a prop forum for Trek and they did wet their pants.

Doesn't it just make you wince though to see him placing sand paper against the model? I think the model had to be repainted though as an earlier Smithsonian re-work wasn't done very accurately. It's such a shame the model had been treated to so much abuse! The IDIC page has more discussion on the history of the models journey from studio to a local college in the early 70's and back to the studio where it wasn't carefully stored to the Smithsonian.

I'm hoping that the model might get one more re-paint to really put it back as this last job was overdone a tad.

Thanks for the link.

Is the IDIC page is still around? I thought it vanished when AOL shut down the sites hosting it.

Re: Star Trek TOS studio models used for filming-photos

Glad you guys are enjoying the images. I see that since I first posted this thread, that site has added quite a few more models. So if you want to see the original Enterprise, you have to click on the "Next page" button in the lower section of the images window, it's the 3rd page in as of today.

Re: Star Trek TOS studio models used for filming-photos

If I were filthy rich, I'd buy one of those models just so I could make a YouTube video of me smashing it into little bits and feeding them into a wood chipper.

Or maybe not (but it would be funny to see the reaction to a video like that).

Interesting, do you often have these thoughts?

No, I don't think about model space ships very much.

Like people who buy the Nintendo Wii for the same purpose....If I had the money I'd do that to a Wii during the height of the Christmas season....I hate that damn machine.
