There is a series of 94 images of the original model in various states of disassembly during the most current restoration of the model for The Smithsonian. This work was controversial. You can see, from what's left of the original paint job, how it used to look.
Ed Miarecki is a professional model maker and has done a lot of work for the film industry, but I think his vision for the restoration went wrong. But that's my opinion.
There's also images of the original Klingon Battlecruiser and Tholian ship too.
