No Sound through HDMI?

I have an issue with homemade DVD-R that others have made for me playing through HDMI.

I know my DVD player supports these discs as they played fine prior to hooking it to a new HDTV through HDMI. The discs "feature film" have MPEG2 and LPCM audio which don't play but the video does (as well as sound recorded for the menus). Only DVD-R's recorded with Dolby Digital seem to play with sound.

Previously I had my player hooked to a Phillips catho television through Audio-Vidio jacks.

Now... I have a Panasonic S52S DVD player and a Vizio SV420XVT set.

Any way to get these disc to play properly with HDMI? I don't see any settings in the DVD to make any difference.

Re: No Sound through HDMI?

Have you made sure the TV can process that audio signal? If I understood correctly, you are running both video and audio through the Vizio, and it worked before you ran it through this new TV. I would check to make sure the Vizio accepts and processes LPCM audio.

EDIT: Okay, I noticed you said the sound for the menus works correctly. Does your MPEG2 video have MPEG2 audio associated with it? I've edited MPEG2 before and had some major issues with the standard audio not playing, and your problem sounds exactly like mine.

Re: No Sound through HDMI?

Yes, it is the same DVD player that was previously hooked to an old analog set through cables and worked. The DVD player does upconvert and plays all sorts of audio/video. I replaced the old Phillips 20" with a Vizio 42" HD and now no sound comes through via the HDMI cable.

I will have to check to see if the set plays other than Dolby but being a new generation HDTV, wonder why it wouldn't? All I remember seeing is Dolby.

Never having burned DVDs myself, is there a way to change the audio from MPEG2 or LPCM to Dolby while burning them?

Re: No Sound through HDMI?

Looking at my TV's specifications... Here is what it says:

Outputs:

1x Optical Audio (SPDIF Optical), 1x Stereo Audio (RCA)

Features:

FULL HD, PIP, POP, Noise Reduction, CC, V-Chip, 3D Comb Filter, Freeze, Support Motion Enhancement and Motion Correction, Picture Enhancement, MPEG-2 Decoding via DTV input, NTSC Video decoding via Video (AV, S-Video or Component), Progressive Scan Video via HDMI, Component or RGB, HDTV via HDMI, Component or RGB (Set-Top Box required), Computer 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024, 1920x1080 via RGB or 1920x1080 via HDMI, Built-in SRS (TruSurroundXT) Audio Supports 1080P (Full HDTV), 1080i (HDTV), 720 (HDTV), 480 (EDTV) and 480i (SDTV) video signals. 1080P FHDTV, HDMI V.1.3, 120Hz Motion Estimation & Motion Compensation, 3.0 channel audio, built-in Dolby Digital Decoding, upgradeable to 5.1 Dolby Surround sound speakers w/ wireless linked subwoofer.

With the above information, can you tell if the MPEG2 or LPCM audio on DVD-Rs are supported? If so, can you hook multiple cables to the set to switch back and forth on the back of the DVD player without affecting one or the other?

Re: No Sound through HDMI?

Okay, it looks like audio is only supported through stereo cables rather than HDMI. Try using RCA (red, white) audio cables from the DVD to the TV.
