HELP!! with Toshiba 65H80 - Convergence issue??

Thread Starter
Hi all,

Brand new here and first post. Of cours, it's because I have a problem.

I have a Toshiba 65H80 I got in Feb 2001, so 8 years old. It has been a great TV and Gregg L. calibrated it for me which made it even better.

Anyway, we watched a couple of movies last night and all was fine. However, when we turned the set on this morning, on the bottom third the color would separate and I would have double images, one in green and one in purple. It is primarily on the bottom third of the screen, middle seems to be fine, and again some separation in the upper corners. And there is skewing (arc / distortion) of the image on the bottom of the screen.

We have run the TV for a while to see if warming up would help, but to no avail. Is this what I see referred to as a convergence problem? If so, I read another thread where Gregg mentioned it could be old solder deteriorating on the convergence boards (I think behind the lamps). Is it repairable or should I just be happy I got so much use out of this for 8 years and move on.

Anyway, any help or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: HELP!! with Toshiba 65H80 - Convergence issue??

I used to own a 56H80 (the 56-inch version of this set). Convergence would drift on my set enough that I had to adjust it every couple of months. Also, sometimes switching from 480p to 1080i sources on the same input would cause the set's convergence to immediately be bumped off -- I could always tell when it would happen, because the set would briefly display some squiggly color lines while switching resolution modes.

If you haven't adjusted the convergence in awhile, I'd try that first and see if it holds. Doing this in the service menu, as opposed to through the main user menus, provides a much more granular set of convergence points -- something like 64 vs. 8, if I recall properly. I always adjusted via the service menu -- it was tedious, but worth it for the extra granularity.

Re: HELP!! with Toshiba 65H80 - Convergence issue??

hi guys
It doesnt sound like convergence. It sounds like the convergence ICs. This is an easy in home repair for a qualified tech. Contact Toshiba....figure $225-$275. If anybody mentions replacing the convergence board...tell them to go away as they do not know what they are doing.
Good luck,

Gregg
