I thought he was much less nervous than I expected. If you want to see nerves, try and find Jimmy Fallon's first show. LOL man he was nervous. I love his show as well now that he has settled into a groove.
Ditto, he didn't seem nervous at all. I thought it was the same ol' Conan, which is what I like.

Re: The Tonight Show w/Conan O'Brien

Ferrel's clip made me want to go to the bathroom!

Decent first show. They're usually one of the weakest of any new talk show, so it's looking up for the rest of the run. The only hiccup is that I started watching the previous "Late Night" long after Andy Richter had already left, so I'm not entirely used to seeing him there. I've always found Max Weinberg to be hilarious as the calm, well dressed yet incredibly perverted sidekick, so I hope there are more opportunities to unmask Max as the sick and twisted sexual deviant that he really is.

And of course, LA BAMBA!!!

In my defense, I was sharing my own personal reaction to the show, but for the record, I am not the only person who thought Conan looked nervous. Here's a quote from an AP review:
Quote:
O'Brien appeared nervous at the long-awaited opening night, pacing onstage during his monologue and mugging with his red pompadour.
Reuters had this to say:
Quote:
It was a debut episode designed for those with ADD: O'Brien's monologue included video gags on political figures, a paean to his 1992 Ford Taurus, his nosebleed seats at the Lakers game, and a stint guiding the Universal Studios Tour. When not immersed in pretaped segments (which may have been piled on in case the new host needed a hand), O'Brien commanded the stage, but seemed more comfortable laughing it up with erstwhile sidekick-turned-announcer Andy Richter than interacting with his 380 audience members. The band, led by Max Weinberg, got barely a nod.

Will Ferrell was a safe choice as a guest; he almost made O'Brien superfluous as he took over the house and deadpanned his way through the segment. For his part, O'Brien was chatty enough, but seemed relieved that no serious questioning would be required.
Like I say, I was posting my own personal reaction to the show and Conan's performance. I said I am a fan and that I plan to continue sampling the program, which I will. I guess after all the hype and build-up, I was hoping for a "grand slam home run" debut, but for me, I didn't get one. As always, YMMV.

That is what he always does. How is that nervous? It seems like the writer has never watched Conan before.

Re: The Tonight Show w/Conan O'Brien

Now THAT's what I'm talking about! Tonight's show was great from start to finish! This is what I was expecting from Conan last night. Conan was... well... CONAN! Every bit worked like gangbusters and Conan and Hanks were terrific together.

Re: The Tonight Show w/Conan O'Brien

Hanks is the best. His Ron Howard stuff is just tear inducing.

In and Out Burger
Star Trek Name dropping.

Co-Co, Co-Co, Co-Co!

Just starting thinking about Hanks again, is he becoming the Jimmy Stewart of this generation (or is there a better comparison from the 30's to 80's)? From Screwball comedy to RomCom to hard edged drama, is there any actor who seems to so easily move from one genre to the the next and almost never miss a beat.

meh... not a conan fan. didn't care for his other show either.

too much slapstick. jay was just funny.

perhaps he will grow on me.......

Re: The Tonight Show w/Conan O'Brien

Well, Conan is getting his old groove back, La Bamba got his first introduction, and so did Max, (I noticed the backup drummer (?)doing percussion now), the monologue was hilarious, and the 'twitter' bit was not great but it was not bad either.the show was so much fun that I got distracted and missed recording Greenday...

I love Jay too, and I'm glad he's coming back at 10PM, Conan after Jay is the perfect combo for me.

The taped piece where he went to Rodeo ROAD had me on the floor. Hanks was the perfect guest(as usual) and Green Day rocked the house. Great show!!!

Re: The Tonight Show w/Conan O'Brien

Does anyone know when they're gonna show the complete focus group thing they teased on Leno's final show?

I've been enjoying it so far--never was a big Leno fan and I think Conan's probably the best interviewer of the big late night hosts. It's been hit or miss for sure, but mostly on the hit side.

Re: The Tonight Show w/Conan O'Brien

I agree with you, AnthonyC - out of all the late-night hosts, I think Conan is the best. The reason I know that is because even if I don't know who the guest is, I'll still watch the interview just to see what he has to say.

If you love Conan, you should buy his 10th Anniversary DVD (I think it was 10?). Probably some of the funniest stuff I've ever seen, including an homage to A Richter that is HYSTERICAL.

Definitely a terrific show. Starting with a much better monologue.

For me, every talk show appearance with Tom Hanks is a reminder that the guy's funny. Between starring in only serious fare and producing only serious fare, Tom Hanks doesn't seem like the same guy who starred in "Bosom Buddies". I miss Tom Hanks the comedian and would love to see him do an occasional dumb comedy again.

Highlight of the night for me too. When he's stepping down, hopefully many years hence, I think that remote will be on the highlight reel. Loved the spot on parody of "Pretty Woman", but the highlight was when he brought it all together in the end, stealing the floor fan and walking down the road in the Rick James wig, the Urban Outfit ensemble, and the Bitch belt buckle and seeing all of the reactions. Pitch perfect comic timing.

After Pearl Jam's shoddy performance, I was beginning to worry that the sound quality in the new set sucked. If it did, they got it fixed for last night: Green Day utilized the space to the max and improvised just enough that you knew you weren't watching a lip-sync performance.

Co-Co Christopher!

I found it interesting that Conan's addresses on his driver's licenses were his places of employment.

Not to get too far off topic here, but I totally agree with you. Hanks was absolutely hilarious in A League of Their Own, Bachelor Party, The Money Pit, etc. I'd love to see him do a comedic role again someday and I certainly wouldn't rule out the possibility...he might be ready for something like that after doing so many serious roles.

You mean Angels and Demons wasn't a comedy?

Re: The Tonight Show w/Conan O'Brien

YouTwitFace!

That was definitely fun. I'm kind of bummed to see the Year 2000 pass, because I always thought it was hilarious that they never changed the date, but at least they milked the change to 3000 for all it was worth.

Are Gwyneth Paltrow's legs made of plastic?

Re: The Tonight Show w/Conan O'Brien

I think it was a case of to much moisturizer lotion on her legs.... never seen anything like that on any of this shows before, but it looks like someone came out during the commercial and wiped some of it off.

Reminds me of a boxing ref asking the corner to remove the excessive Vaseline from the fighter's face..LOL

Is it my local OTA station feed or is the Audio not as good as it was before in the old set?

Re: The Tonight Show w/Conan O'Brien

How could Coop and Co Co be doing the bit about trying to get a nickname to stick with Julia Louis-Dreyfuss right there on the couch and no one referenced George trying to get nicknamed T-Bone and they call him CoCo instead?

Re: The Tonight Show w/Conan O'Brien

McHales story about his son had me in stitches, I think it was the delivery more than anything because the lines weren't THAT great, but I had to press pause and catch my breath.

Kids a playa.

Re: The Tonight Show w/Conan O'Brien

I'm not entirely sure I like Andy Richter being there. It appears as if the producers are trying to rekindle the past when Andy was on the show. I much prefer Max Weinberg and his dead-pan deliveries. The man can perform miracles even when he shows absolutely no expression whatsoever. In fact, the entire band is a complete sidekick comedy team!

I know I'll miss the "adult" antics of the old show, but Conan is playing at an earlier time slot, and we all have to adapt. Hopefully he'll find some decent running gags to replace what he had to leave behind in NYC.

Re: The Tonight Show w/Conan O'Brien

I am loving the new show, but then again I always liked Conan's Old show. I am worried that he is bringing too much over to the new show. This stuff (like "in the year 3000') might not play as well in this "older" demographic. I hope he tries some new stuff and ditch some of the old.

I have noticed that he is getting more and more "Hammy" in the monologue. Just like he was in the old show. I hope this doesn't scare away the old fogies.

Whew, I'm not the only one who was disappointed to see them switch! Fortunately the bit itself is otherwise the same but it just doesn't feel right.

So are they going to air Conan's senior citizen focus group tonight? I've been looking forward to that since they showed a sneak peek on Leno last week.

I never actually watched Late Night when Andy Richter was there so I don't know how it was then, but it seems to me like the issue is more that they're not actually giving him anything to do yet. He's made like one quip a night and that's about it.

Before he would be sitting on the couch like how Ed McMahon did. So he was out there for all of the interviews as well. I agree that they just aren't giving him much to do and it seems like a waste.

But in Andy's absence, Conan developed a great/awkward rapport with Max and the band so we now have two competing sidekicks splitting Co Co's attention.

Re: The Tonight Show w/Conan O'Brien

I'm glad to see that the show hasn't changed that much.

I wonder if Conan still serenades the audience with "Hunk O' Burnin' Love" before the show?
