I agree. Obviously, comedy is one of the most subjective things in the world and I can look at something like Paul Blart: Mall Cop (for example) and see how that might appeal to some people but Dane Cook is so painfully unfunny and untalented to me that I can't even begin to fathom how he's been so successful. That being said though, he can sell out huge venues (like Madison Square Garden) so it's clear that some people love him.

Add me to the list of those who can't stand Dane Cook.

Re: The Tonight Show w/Conan O'Brien

My local NBC affiliate is going digital at 2:05 AM, so I taping it off the analog rabbit ears and happened to catch a fantastic Andy Richter story from Norm McDonald on tonight's "Tonight Show". I'll post a clip tomorrow sometime.

You will post a show report I hope. Don't keep us in suspense!

Re: The Tonight Show w/Conan O'Brien

Letterman beat Conan again last night.

Conan Watch: Dave bests Conan again in preliminary household rating

The 2nd time this week. I guess the last time Dave beat Jay was in October.

Obviously, no need to panic and its just the start of ratings war between these two, there has to be some concern at NBC for it to be this close after 1 week.

About panic, who knows with network people but I sure hope they don't do anything drastic with Conan (I like him) and if they do make changes I hope its more in line of what Conan and his staff want rather then other people.

Need more Andy imo.

NBC said before he took over that they will measure Conan's success in terms of the first couple years and not the first weeks or even months, so I wouldn't be too worried. I'm sure the show will evolve, but in an organic sort of fashion.

As promised, Norm McDonald on his relationship with Andy Richter from last night's "Conan":

Re: The Tonight Show w/Conan O'Brien

I can't stand Norm McDonald. I simply don't find him funny at all. I even remember his stint on Saturday Night Live. His Weekend Updates were extremely painful to watch simply because THEY WEREN'T FUNNY!

Skipped over it. Next guest, please!

Re: The Tonight Show w/Conan O'Brien

I've never liked Weekend Update, and Norm's tenure was no exception. However, Norm McDonald + Conan O'Brien = hilarity in my book.

That Shatner interview from last night is one of the funniest and most entertaining talk show interviews I've ever seen.

Re: The Tonight Show w/Conan O'Brien

I looks like Conan's ratings are doing fine.

For Conan, a Strong Second Week

I love this quote:
Quote:
Among younger viewers Mr. O’Brien continued to dwarf Mr. Letterman’s ratings, beating him soundly in the most important group for many advertisers, viewers 18 to 49, and crushing him with the youngest end of that group, viewers 18 to 34.

It is looking like Conan is doing a fine job.

One interesting data point is the average ages of the viewers of the two shows:
Letterman - 56.7
O'Brian - 45.7
Leno - 55.7

I guess this means that NBC should be happy. I think they were hoping to get a younger audience.

Friday night's show was really solid all around. Gotta love Triumph.

Kudos on Shatner and Triumph. It's moments like these that make me not miss Leno.

Seeing the show in person earlier this evening was awesome. You can't see me or my two friends in the audience shots however because we were near the far wall on the band's side of the stage.

The set is just as impressive in person as live.

The coolest moment, from an audience perspective, was during the Demi Lovato's song. Conan's family came in and his daughter (5-6 years old?) was obviously a fan. She stood with him just off camera during the performance. You can see this in one of the very long shots during the performance on he bottom left of the frame, though maybe by air time they had cropped them out.

Anyway, good times all around.

Brandon - very cool, I am jealous!

As the show winds down, at least its going out with a bang. This week was his strongest and funniest of the run. Let's hope he tops it next week.

I'd say overall the show has been about an 8, but reckless Conan is a 10. Let's hope his future project out there in the ether is the latter, lack of handlers and all.

Here is an interesting article that I'm certain some on here will vehemently disagree with but there are some very good points in it.

As I said in the other thread, this is simply PR to back up the new Tonight Show meal ticket (Leno) and hurt as much as possible their future competitor (O'Brien). They were, just days ago before this story broke, defending OBrien (the article: "They have previously defended the performance of the show, saying seven months was not a fair shot for Mr. O’Brien to hone his comedic voice at the earlier hour especially in the face of reduced audiences for Mr. Leno’s 10 p.m. show and the late local newscasts that followed it.") Now their trying to push as much blame on the party leaving the network as possible. That's simply the way you do this; raining the crap down on O'Brien is something Howard Stern predicted around Tuesday this week. That's business 101.

EDIT: “He was just stubborn about not being willing to broaden the appeal of his show.”

Conan told the world on his last Late Night that "I am who I am" and that he wouldn't change that. He did bend a little, but they should have known who they were getting, They had 17 years of shows to see.

I can see both sides of that. Sure they had 17 years to see what they were getting, but it's like a promotion from the minor leagues to the major leagues... you expect the player to elevate to the level of competition, and you hope he can based on what you've seen against inferior competition. If Conan is not meeting ratings expectations, do the suits do nothing and accept the lower numbers, cancel him outright, or make suggestions on what might improve things? I've no problem with them making suggestions.

On the other hand, I also have no problem with Conan saying, "I am who I am."

I  don't think there's any wrong party in that exchange, just two parties with shared overall goals but divergent immediate ones. What I have a problem with is the public finger pointing -- especially while the show is still on the air.
I essentially agree with that.

The Andy Richter monologue about his expenses was side splitting funny.

Agreed. When he went from being the sad sack guy who always gets canceled to the sad sack guy who got terribly far into debt ("You see TV.... a spent some money.") I was laughing hysterically.

Seriously. I haven't had a laugh that good in quite a while.

That last episode was epic and just all around great. And you don't get enough people re-emphasizing the basics so sincerely: Don't be cynical, work hard and just be a kind person.

To be continued indeed.
That was completely worth getting up at 4 am London time to watch.

Joyous.

A one word description of a show that could have been so dark and downbeat or full of well deserved shots, talk about going all positive.  Greatest Kudos to Conan
