So I wonder if places like amazon.com will lower the MSRP to match this press release.

Hmm, I notice they didn't brag about "original Theatrical versions!!'

or perhaps even...........

"Now NOT including footage always before seen'----referring to Trek 6

Re: Paramount Press Release: Star Trek Original Motion Picture Collection & Trilogy (BD)

I have been waiting for these movies to come out and part of me is very excited! However I think I would rather have these titles in there seperate Bluray cases. And I am a little surprised that they are not releasing all the movies. Why just the first 6 movies? The price is not bad at all for 6 Trek movies in HD. I am looking foward to hearing about the quality of these titles because of video quality issues with Paramount and other past releases.

Has there been any news when we might see the remaining movies released on Bluray?

It is a puzzler. I wonder if there is perhaps some sort of greatly hyped, highly lucrative event happening within weeks of this release that may tie into these six movies more than the other four.

Perhaps I missed it, but has it been confirmed what type of packaging these sets will have?

Thinpacks in a slipcase.

Any news if these will be sold individually?

Nothing announced, but rumors that it'll happen around when the Abrams movie hits disc this fall.

I don't know if I am in the minority of opinion here but I am
a bit distressed that "The Director's Cut" of the original motion
picture was not included --- especially on a format that could have
supported it via branching.

I'm not so sure that TMP could have been supported by branching. Even ignoring that the CGI doesn't exist in hi-def, or that many of the changes are not entire scenes but slices of a second or two, there's also the completely different sound mix. I'm not sure just how suited branching is to that.

I would have liked TMP to be available, but that one I can almost understand why Paramount didn't spring for it. I'm not so forgiving of the others missing their Director's Editions, because II was (as far as I can tell) straight splicing, and the minor optical transitions in VI shouldn't be terribly difficult/expensive to recreate.

You're certainly not the only one to express that feeling - there's another thread going where we spent pages and pages going back and forth on that. The bottom line for why it couldn't included is this: when the "Director's Edition" of TMP was created, Paramount only paid for the work to be done in standard-def resolution. (Now, we can debate whether or not the Director's Edition was better, worse, or equal to the original, but that's besides the point.) There simply is no HD source that the studio could have gone to for the Director's Edition. Being that TMP's theatrical version has run on some HD channels the past couple years, it would seem they already had an HD version available to use for the Blu-ray. I don't think this was a matter of Paramount wanting to shaft the fans - I think it's a matter of there not being an HD source they could use for the Director's Edition, and either the time, money, or desire to make one wasn't there.

I was actually in the minority opinion in being glad that if there was only one version being used on the Blu-ray, that it was the theatrical version. TMP has never been available on disc in its theatrical incarnation. In fact, the only versions I've ever been able to see were the "special longer version" made for TV and home video in the early 80s, and the "director's edition" that came out on DVD around 2001. I don't think it's worth me picking apart all the reasons why I have issues with the Director's Edition yet again. But what I will say is that I was seriously concerned for some time that the original Star Trek film was going to be one of those things, like the original Star Wars trilogy, where the owners of the rights would go out of their way to suppress the original version. So I'm glad it's finally coming out as it first appeared in theaters. Same for Star Trek VI. (It may turn out that I like the revised versions that have been on video and DVD better, but I honestly thought that the version I saw in theaters in 1991, the version that introduced me to Star Trek in the first place, was lost forever.)

I agree, I would have loved for the director's cut be available for the original motion picture.

I am assuming that the slimline cases are the same thing as the slimline dvd cases? If this is the case , then I am going to pick up the 6 disc set when it comes out. My main focus is the quality of the transfers and that each movie has a lossless audio track. And from what I have seen it looks like these titles are getting a Dolby True HD 7.1 mix, is this correct? If so would this mark the first titles on Bluray to come with a 7.1 Dolby True HD track? I just hope that they release the Next Generation movies in a set sometime this year. Or at least by the end of next summer.

Re: Paramount Press Release: Star Trek Original Motion Picture Collection & Trilogy (BD)

Josh, all you said about the DC vs the theatrical is true, but

if Paramount had ANY concern for the fans they could have easily included the "Special longer version' with the theatrical via branching.

It had NO new visual or sound effects and contained ALL the extra character bits in the DC ( as well as some the DC did not)

I like the DC best but, I would have bought the version I just mentioned because it does have the character stuff that is the heart of the improvments.

this would have engendered a lot of goodwill in fans--especially those whose favorite version is the "SLV'--even though they are are fairly small minority.
It's not just a bootleg or 'TV version'---it has had several official Paramount releases.

Just as people were afraid that the thearical versions of Trek 1 & Trek 6 would never see the DVD or blu-ray format, it is now almost certain that the 'SLV' WILL NEVER see DVD or Blu-ray because it is just as imcompatable with the DC as the thearical was. And I doubt we'll see the third and least popular version get it's own separate release in this economic climate and probably in any situation.

An explanation by Paramount stating that the Thearical and the DC were incompatable for branching, but stating that the SLV was being included would have been accepted as honest and generous.

Well, most of it. Kirk's spacewalk would probably have to be dropped, thanks to the studio walls showing.

Please. When has any for-profit business been concerned with fans or their consumers? And Paramount of all people? Come on!

Ya know, I can get on board with $105 for the set. Much lower than I expected, honestly.

Yes, they could have eliminated that or spent a very little amount of money to extend a matte painting as was originally intended---which would have also generated good will.

But of course the space suit didn't match, either!

The theatrical version was first available only in widescreen format on laserdisc back in '91. I have it. Then they put it out in widescreen VHS as part of a boxed set with all the movies up to 5 in '92, but I don't know if the W/S VHS issues were ever released individually.

I personally prefer the theatrical version, but won't mind the DE when it's decided to be done.

Ummm... it might just be me, but I seem to remember that the "extended version" was actually a "TV version" and, as such, for it to be presented in its OAR surely it should be 4:3? (Hence removing the studio walls, etc)

If it was presented in 4:3 it wouldn't be possible to branch it against the theatrical version.

Personally I'd love a 3-disc set for the movie, and I know that one was being considered for HD-DVD. I wouldn't rule it out for BD at some point.

Re: Paramount Press Release: Star Trek Original Motion Picture Collection & Trilogy (BD)

I am glad we will get to see the theatrical version on disc. I ordered the widescreen vhs of it from Suncoast more than 10 years ago. Back in the days before the world wide web. I've hung on to it not knowing if I'd ever see it on disc since I never had a laserdisc player.

I just hope the print is cleaned up. I found the VFX sequences to be quite dirty on the Director's Edition of the disc. Especially when compared to the clean up the Star Wars films of that era got.

I'm holding my breath to see how all of these films look. I'm a bit bothered that TWOK is the only one they are advertising as being restored.

Even if the cut were originally from the TV version, I'm not so sure that I'd grant 4:3 as being the OAR; everything was shot/composed with the intention of being shown at 2.35:1.

Maybe, maybe not. I don't know exactly what the Blu-ray PIP/overlay specs are--could they just drop two pillarboxes on top of the 16:9 image?
