Sony Blu Ray hookup?

I'm picking up a Sony BDP-S350 Blu Ray player today and was wondering how many HDMI cables I'm going to need. I'm new to this and as of now have everything ran in component video, I'm assuming you run HDMI from the player to receiver (Harman Kardon AVR247), then from receiver to TV (Sony Bravia 1080p 46").

I'd like to still be able to listen to regular TV in stereo for football games and such and am asking if this is still possible with the new setup? Will I need to keep my component cables from my receiver to the TV to do this on top of my HDMI cable or how does this work? Thanks ahead of time for the info.

Since your Blu-ray player has nothing to do with your TV source, it shouldn't effect the way you watch TV, unless you switch any cable box you have over to HDMI.

For just the Blu-Ray, you would need 2 HDMI, one from the player to the H/K, and one from the H/K to the TV. Don't spend a fortune on HDMI cables (NO Monster!!!). You can get great HDMI cables from bettercables, bluejeans, or other online outfits for 1/10th the price of Monster and the picture/sound quality will be exactly the same.

Thanks for the info! So all sound from my receiver will go through the HDMI cable or no? For example, watching football games, or do I have to keep my component cables on also as I use a different source (Video 1) from my H/K.

Re: Sony Blu Ray hookup?

For TV you have to run an optical cable from the TV to the receiver. The HDMI is all one-way, it carries the video from the receiver to the TV. The HDMI doesn't take sound from the TV to the receiver.

I recommend monoprice.com for cables, high quality & inexpensive.

It's a little more difficult getting audio from the receiver to the TV. Some receivers allow you to switch to "pass-thru audio" mode on HDMI, but not all feature this, and it's usually buried deep in the setup menu.

If I were setting it up, I'd go HDMI from the cable box to the receiver, then run a separate analog R/L RCA analog and component video from the cable box to the TV and use that when you want just the TV speakers on. A Harmony remote would simplify the switching; you could have one button assigned to "Watch TV w/ Surround" using HDMI, and another assigned to "Watch TV - No Surround" using component and analog audio.

I don't think he mentioned having a cable box or wanting to listen via the TV speakers. One generally doesn't need to get audio from the receiver to the TV, if you always listen with your external speakers, you just need to get audio from the TV to the receiver (if using TV's tuner instead of cable box/satellite receiver/DVR).

Now that I look at it, I may have mistaken "listen to regular TV in stereo for football games and such" as listening through the TV speakers. If this is not the case, then a simple optical/coax cable from the cable box (if he is using one without HDMI) or the TV (if using the internal tuner) to the receiver will do.
