Question on HDMI & Optical Audio Out

Ok, I'm making a bedroom setup. I have a LN32A450 LCD tv, with a PS3 and a digital box for now. Since I currently won't have my surround I can run the PS3 and the digital box straight to the TV with HDMI's for video AND audio correct?

Secondly, when I get my surround I'll be using an Onkyo 606 as my receiver. Since it has 4 HDMI ins, is this how I would want to run it?

PS3>606-HDMI
Digital Box>606-HDMI
606>TV-HDMI
TV>606-Optical Audio Out

Am I right in assuming that I can only get 2 channel sound if I run PS3 and Digital box straight into tv?

Do I have both of these correct?

Thanks alot!

Re: Question on HDMI & Optical Audio Out

There is no particular reason to run any connection from the TV to your receiver unless you are receiving some OTA telecasts in addition to the STB (digital box).

Yes, since your TV has no internal DD or DTS decoder and no external speakers. If you're asking about the sound passed through your TV-to-Receiver HDMI connection, yes, chances are you will get only stereo. As Lew noted, the HDMI output on virtually every TV is there for the TV's internal tuner, so that it can output digital sound for OTA broadcasts to a surround receiver. Some TVs don't pass anything at all the comes in on their HDMI inputs, others downmix those inputs to stereo. I have heard that there is one model or line of TV out there somewhere that actually passes digital sound via the HDMI output, but I've never seen confirmation and have no idea what TV this is supposed to be.

So, again to agree with Lew, there's really no reason to use the HDMI output on the TV since you have a digital cable box - unless you want to be able to get surround sound while watching OTA material. (This may also work for the TV's internal QAM tuner, if you split the cable from the wall and send one line to the QAM and the other to the cable box. Never tried that myself, so I'm not sure.)

Joe

Re: Question on HDMI & Optical Audio Out

It does seem in the world of HDMI receivers, cable box's, and DVD players the TV tends to be turned to to nothing much more than a large computer type monitor.

I wonder why TV manufactures don't offer sets that have premium video displays but skip the speakers, tuners, and outputs and pass the savings on to those consumers who don't need them.

Economy of scale. It's cheaper to just put in the $4 speakers than it is to retool the factory for a "less expensive" model without speakers, which only appeals to a small market.

Re: Question on HDMI & Optical Audio Out

Ok, so do i have it right then? I was never running an HDMI out from the tv, just an HDMI in from the receiver and a fiber optical out from tv to receiver.

So would this be right?

The only thing the optical out is good for is to output Dolby Digital from the TV's internal HD tuner. Since you have a cable box, you are probably never going to use the internal HD tuner, and thus the optical out from the TV to the receiver is useless. Skip it.

Ohhhhh ok, I see. So the fiber optical is useless as I'll be getting the sound via HDMI when it goes into my receiver. Sounds good. Thanks for all the help guys.

As I recall, when flat panels first came out there were some that didn't have speakers or tuners and were marketed as monitors. But it's been a while so maybe I'm mistaken.
