New Mattress

My wife and I have decided to finally upgrade to a king size bed. We are currently looking looking at getting a Durango mattress from Denver Mattress. We tried it out in the store and both really liked it. At $800 it isn't the most expensive mattress by any stretch but it isn't the cheapest either.

Does anyone have a Durango and what are your likes and dislikes about it?

Re: New Mattress

My girlfriend and I are doing the same thing. We won't be getting a king size as we feel it would be too big. I will say finding something really good isn't easy. We've looked at all the name brands and delux variations. I never thought buying a good mattress would be such a PITA. What brands did you try that lead you to Durango?

Re: New Mattress

We tried several Serta, Dr's Choice, Tempur Pedic (too hot) Denver Pedic (cooler but not worth $2000) and Sealy.

The Durango is a coil-spring model but doesn't have a lot of motion transfer. It has side supports so you don't feel like you're going to roll off the edge of the bed. It's a little more firm than some of the other models but we can add a mattress topper if we decide we want a little extra cushion.

We currently have a queen size but I tend to roll over a lot in my sleep and my wife sais she's tired of sleeping on the edge of the bed. We have the room for a king size so we decided to go that route.

Re: New Mattress

At Ikea.

Sultan Hassleback king size mattress: $449.
Sultan Tuvebo king size pillowtop: $249.
Total: $698.

I purchased the Queen size equivalent along with the Hopen bed frame. Very firm and comfortable, but it did take a few days to get used to the new bed. My body wasn't used to being laid flat instead of in a curve.

Re: New Mattress

My wife and I recently bought an extra firm "Princess" model by Englander (king size), for less than $700 (Mattress only). It has been wonderful. We wake up feeling better now. It's not a pillowtop. We didn't like those.

Re: New Mattress

Don't have experience with Durango, but judging from it's price, that should be a nice choice.

Re: New Mattress

I ended up, for the first time, buying a Serta or Sealy foam
mattress a few years back. Found it to be much firmer than
a coil mattress but with the side effects of it retaining a lot of
body heat to the point where you really sweat with a heavy blanket
across your body.

Years later, the foam mattress has held up very well but I find
that I am tossing and turning often due to the fact that the mattress
may be a little too firm for my body.

Re: New Mattress

My wife and I bought a mattress from Denver Mattress a few years back. I don't know if it's exactly the same, but it sounds similar based on the price and description.

My wife loves it, but I wish that I had tried it for a little longer. I tend to sleep on my side, so I need a mattress that is not as firm as what she needs. I would suggest laying on the mattress for a full 15-20 minutes in your normal sleeping position no matter how stupid that makes you feel.

Anyway, we wound up getting a good mattress pad, followed by a feather bed (ie: 3 inch thick feather mattress pad). Now we both love it, but I still could have gone with a less firm bed for a little less money. All nit-picking aside it's the best bed I've ever had - (but I do need to buy fitted sheets with really deep pockets to fit).

To sum it up:
1) Try it out for at least 15-20 minutes.
2) Get as firm as you need.
3) Buy whatever mattress topper you need for padding separately - it's a lot cheaper that paying extra for "pillow top".

Re: New Mattress

My wife is a back sleeper and I am a stomach sleeper so it's a good firmness for us both. Thanks for all the input so far.

Re: New Mattress

I know a lot of places around here let you take the mattress home for 30 or some up to 60 days to try out. If you want a firmer or softer one, you just swap it out. I really recommend that since it may take a few weeks of sleeping on a new bed to really tell if it is working well for you.

We are in the market for a new mattress since our old one is giving us back aches.  It will be used without a box spring.  Any recommendations?  We live in the Little Rock, AR area so we don't have all the options of a bigger metropolitan area.

I know you're asking about a specific mattress, but I just wanted to chime in with a different suggestion. I have a select comfort mattress and it's one of the best purchases I've made. My wants (in mattress terms) change from time to time. Sometimes I want it firmer, sometimes softer. The select comfort gives me this option, at the touch of a button.

Is that the air mattress thing?  We have cats and I'd worry about claws puncturing it.  Can you give me an idea of what they cost.

I have a couple of cats as well (with all claws in place.) Have had this mattress for 4 years now and have had no problems w/ the cats -- and they really like to spend time on it. The top part is pretty thick and there are supports on the sides. Definitely worth checking out if you have a select comfort store close to you.

I can't remember exactly what I spent, but I remember it was cheaper than other mattresses I was looking at.

Will this kind of thing fit into an existing bed frame.  What we have is basically a water bed frame in which our mattress sits.  Will the air bed do that?

Can you describe the feeling of an air mattress.  Do you know you're on air as opposed to a regular mattress?  How would we feel it different, besides being better.

I second the Select Comfort Sleep Number beds. My wife and I have entirely different needs when it comes to sleeping, and it was the only bed we could both agree on. after visiting numerous mattress stores.

Select Comfort has numerous models, but the air chambers themselves are the same for each model. The difference is what the air chambers are encased in. Anything from a simple pad to deluxe pillow top (and they also have those adjustable reclining models).

Rather than going to a regular mattress store where they usually only have the single show model, try to go to one of the Select Comfort retail stores so you can actually try the different types of padding they have. We ended up choosing the mid-range model after trying them all out.

The beds come with a plastic box frame (like a box spring but hollow) for mattress support. A waterbed frame would probably be able to support the mattress without it.

As a side note, the bed has become even more practical now that my wife is pregnant with our second child (due on the 30th, expect an announcement next week ). Rather than having to buy one of those expensive body pillows to support the weight of the belly, she has let air out of the chamber to the point that her side is concave like a hammock. As a side sleeper, the curve matches the contour of her belly perfectly.

I found an online store that sells essentially the same thing as the Select Comfort mattress (actually the construction looks better) for less money.  I've been very happy with it.  If I have a bad night's sleep, I just make a minor adjustment and it's fixed.  To answer Johnny's question, it doesn't feel the least bit like the sort of air mattress you might sleep on when, say, camping.  It simply feels like a mattress that you can make firmer or softer.

Johnny,

I'd suggest just going in to one of the select comfort stores and trying it out for yourself.

A quick search said that there is a select comfort store in the mccain mall.

Take care,

Brett

What store?  Links please.  How long have you had it?  You've got me interested.
