The Disclaimer
Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed Sunday advertisements. All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price.

I, obviously, cannot include EVERY title released in a given week in the RoundUp. The titles included are those that I am interested in...as well as those which I consider will be of interest to a majority of consumers (and sometimes I’ll miss one!). I don't get paid for this, and I don't have the time to list every DVD. So, please don't complain! If there is a title not included in the RoundUp that you want to see, PLEASE just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone!

Note that I cannot include Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club prices in the RoundUp. They set prices at individual stores based on nearby competition, so there is no way I can say here what price you'll find at YOUR local Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club location. And, Circuit City is still out of business...even in Hawaii (where they NEVER guaranteed their prices anyway).

Re: Weekly RoundUp 2-24-2009

Thanks for the Roundup!

A fair warning for those, like me, who are looking to pick up the Akira BD, it has sold out from the manufacturers and the second pressing (without all the first pressings limited bells & whistles) won't be in stores until 3/10.

chris maybe i'm misunderstanding you.
what do you mean by sold out from manufacturers?

Akira on shelves this tuesday will be a first printing and this
first print is what is sold out?
the second printing will be missing special features?
The one being offered on amazon shipping on the 24th
should be the one with the "bells and whistles"?

are you aware of a printing number, how many?

well?
huh?
huh?

So many questions...so little time...

...another week to catch up on some previously purchased titles. Were any of these movies actually released to theaters?

Re: Weekly RoundUp 2-24-2009

Tony, i am sure you can find Akira on release day. Plenty are in distribution. Its just like the MST3K 20th Ann. tin, once its gone from store shelves, you wont be able to get the little book, and whatever, that comes with it, when the next pressing comes out.

Good to see an anime title sell so well...on the distribution level, anyway!

Thanks for the roundup. Nothing for me this week.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 2-24-2009

I'll be picking up Futurama: Into The Wild Green Yonder and The Bird With The Crystal Plummage Blu-rays. I doubt the new special features are enough to get me to pick up The Last House On The Left again but I'll see if I can find some reviews and then decide.

Thanks for the prices, guys!

Basically it means that stores (Best Buy, Amazon, etc) won't get another order in (provided they sell out) until 3/10. I'm not sure what the actual pressing numbers were this go-around but I don't imagine they're too high seeing as this is somewhat of a niche release. Therefore I worry that it may be difficult to come across by later in the week and thus the warning.

The one coming out on Tuesday contains a 20 page booklet and slipcover that won't be available on the later version. All of the on-disc extras (i.e. the really important stuff) will remain the same.

Pic

The booklet and slipcover probably aren't deal breakers for most but an additional 2 week wait for the non-limited release might be for some.

There were, just not any worth leaving your house for.

As for this week's releases, my local BB was nice enough to have the Fox BDs out last Thursday so I nabbed French Connection. Maybe Vanishing Point somewhere down the road...

John Frankenheimer's "Ronin" is scheduled to be released on Blu-Ray. Not sure why it's not in Best Buy's online catalog.

Amazon: 31.49

Interesting, Cameron.

I had Ronin on my "New Release" list. But when it didn't show up on Best Buy's site I figured it must be an import (Amazon carries a lot of those from 101 Distribution). I would have sworn I checked amazon.com and that was the case...but I just checked and it seems to be an MGM release slated for 2-24. Don't know what's up with that $31.49 price tag, though.

Do you have a review copy?

Re: Weekly RoundUp 2-24-2009

There is an independent film being released this week that many might not have heard of, and one that I've been spreading the word about. Also, I thought RoundUppers might be interested in checking out. It's called "Broken Windows" and is from first-time writer and director Tony Hickman. The indie stars Larisa Oleynik, Sarah Thompson, Jennifer Hall, Sara Jane Nash, Corri English, Jonathan Murphy ("October Road", "Life on Mars"), Jason George, Devon Gummersall ("My So-Called Life", "Roswell"), Kyle Brandt, Hayley Marie Norman, and Michael Gross. It also features music from Majandra Delfino ("Maria DeLuca" on "Roswell").

While I didn't work on this production or know anyone personally from it, I'm a fan whose background includes involvement on Fan Forum years ago for "Roswell" and now on the official ABC.com message boards for "October Road" and "Life on Mars".

The film was screened last year at the San Diego Film Festival. I'm on the East Coast, and there wasn't a way for me to attend myself.

It will be available to purchase and rent on the 24th.

I just wanted to give you the heads up. Thanks for the Roundup and the encouragement to post this, Mike.

Thanks, Chris! It's great to have someone on the "inside" to let us know about releases such as this one...that definitely got-by me...and might have gotten-by some others here.

Broken Windows is listing @ $17.99 at amazon.com and $14.99 at Best Buy.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 2-24-2009

That "Broken Windows" seems like a made for tv effort that doesn't try to excel above the same old stuff I've seen done countless times on the OC, Smallville, Gilmore Girls, etc. It's very hard in this day and age to have stand out pieces that don't resemble other efforts. I will say, Thank You Chris for bringing this to my attention for I did not know about it. There's a possibility my girlfriend will love this and I'll show her the trailer you provided. So, that means this will be sitting on our dvd shelf tuesday.

Yeah, that price is nuts for what is on the disc.

I haven't received a review copy yet.

I stopped by Best Buy today and had them refund me $5 under their Price Guarantee.

Don't forget the $10 off coupon for HSM3 on Blu-ray:

High School Musical 3 - Save $10 On Blu-ray Or $5 On DVD
Note: When you click on the coupon "buttons" in the above link, you will be redirected from Disney's site to Coupons.com to print the coupons. If you have not printed coupons from them before you will be prompted to install a small coupon printer app. These coupons will print directly to your printer (no display on screen and no print to file/PDF). Note also that you will only be able to print each coupon twice.
Also, there is a $5 rebate available when you purchase HSM3 (on SD-DVD or Blu-ray) and Sara Lee® Soft & Smooth™ Bread, Buns or Hillshire Farm® Deli Select™ Lunch Meats. (How in the world do they come up with some of these linked product promotions?) See the complete details on the 2 page PDF here:

http://www.gomeat.com/offers/hsm3_rebate.pdf

The amazing thing about this promo (at least for me) is that my wife went to the store yesterday and just happened to pick up 2 loaves of Sara Lee Soft & Smooth Bread, and then I discovered the rebate today. Whoo-hoo . . . free bread (after MIR)!

BTW - no new releases for me this week. But I did pick-up The Bucket List when I was at Best Buy today for $6.99.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 2-24-2009

A few Blu-rays being released this week that I'll be getting (not necessarily this week, though): Futurama, Sex Drive and probably Super Speedway. If Breaking Bad was getting a BD release, I'd probably get that, too, but I'll pass on the SD until/unless it eventually falls to the $15-20 range.

If you have Comcast, all the episodes are on On Demand in HD and SD until the S2 premiere.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 2-24-2009

I've been saying a lot of "maybe" titles in the last couple of weeks and haven't picked a single thing up in the name of being financially responsible. Maybe French Connection sometime down the line. Gotta save those pennies for May...

Re: Weekly RoundUp 2-24-2009

What?!?!?!?! That is outrageous! Of all the titles this week...that is one I was looking forward to. Ironweed was written by Albany-area author William Kennedy. The book/movie takes place in Albany and was shot (partially) in Albany.

What the heck were they thinking???

Sorry I let you down on that one, John...but it's a complete surprise to me.
