Should I Continue to Wait for These...

Thread Starter
Should I continue to wait for Blu-rays that have been released on HD DVD but have not been announced for BD? Over the last few months, I have seen titles like Children of Men, Hollywoodland, Stardust, Atonement, Hot Fuzz, and others at ridiculous prices...some as low as $4.00. I want these on BD, but how likely are these to be released in the near future?

If you actually still have a player for them (and some collection of favorite titles to boot), why not just spring for them at $4 each?? Why should it matter all that much if their catch-up BD releases will come out anytime soon?

Certainly, I'd pick up the ones I really want for that kind of price, if I were in your position. Heck, I still occasionally buy DVDs for that kind of bargain bin pricing. It's one thing if certain titles have already been announced, but if there are no announcements for near future release, I'd say just go fer it.

Because he'll have to rebuy them once his current HD-DVD player bites the dust?

That's why you you keep a back up machine in the closet. It's not like the players are hard to come by.

.... which might be as soon as 10 or 15 years from now.

My first Toshiba SDVD player, the one I bought back in 1997, is still in excellent working order. I admit keeping it for sentimental reasons, but that's beside the point. I serves in my guest's bedroom.

The HD DVD A1 was built like a tank. Typically, it will survive 10 - 15 years with ease.
(Personally, I decided to buy a second one, an A35, and also an XBox360-add-on-without-an-XBox360 to protect my little library even further.)

A few of my DVDs went dead after approx. 5 years (an estimate, I don't know when exactly). E.g. the first Spartacus - I now own the HD DVD. I don't know how many of those $15-$22 SDVD discs in my possession will not live another 5 years, or are dead already without me knowing it.

Bottom line: if you see an attractive HD DVD below $10 and it's not out (yet?) on BD, why not buy it?

I agree, if you already own a HD DVD player, why not pick up those titles you want at $4 a shot.

On the flip side if I were in your position and did not have a player I wouldn't invest (buying a HD DVD player) that much into a dead format just to get a few titles that will probably make it out on BD in the next 6 to 24 months.

Re: Should I Continue to Wait for These...

I originally capped my HD DVD collection at around 50 titles or so, until they became really cheap (6$ and under for the most part). I then added another 70 titles or so--everything I would have ever bought from the list of titles in HD DVD.

I have two players, so it will be some time before they are unusable (if at all--I have a CD player from 1986 that is still in good working order and it wasn't especially "overbuilt"). Oh, and I would not leave a spare "in the closet" for too long. The moving parts (particularly those made of rubber or plastic) may become brittle with disuse. It's why I still fire up my VHS deck every once in a while AND why I've attached my second HD DVD player to my SD TV in the living room (it's the all purpose player for the TV).
