I think it's important to remind people that if it wasn't for both a public and media artist groundswell of support against pan & scan home videos over 20 years ago, we would never have gotten to the point we have now. To continually strive, or at least hope, for increased attention and vigilance in properly preserving film as history and art for the public market should always be a work-in-progress and never just rest on its laurels. Such careful scrutiny should always be welcome, even if it at times it does appear to be bordering or crossing over into the extreme. I would rather run that risk than blindly trust the manufacturers to do the right thing on their own or provide the careful and calculated oversight often necessary in serving this media the way it should be. Time and again it has been consistently proven that the studios need the input of their potential customers to establish and further refine their product. To just say we've come a long way and now it's time to stop or to recede from the debate and label anyone else who doesn't as a "fanatic," is a very short sighted perspective.Having said all that, I do agree that one should always reach a level of personal satisfaction within themselves and their passions, lest they NEVER find any contentment whatsoever and instead choose to always focus on their disappointment, whether justified or not. But at the same time it's important to remember that not everyone finds that level simultaneously or from the same catalyst.
