Alien trilogy coming to blu-ray?!... - Page 10

Hi Oscar.  Thanks, but unfortunately, I don't have a copy of that article, so I can't really comment.  I don't even remember doing an interview for Alien Anthology.  There was a Fox international press day I was invited to a year ago, and I did a little sneak peek of MU-TH-UR Mode for those in attendance, and was allowed to spill the beans on some things, but I don't recall any specifics.  Seems like a thousand centuries ago.

However, I will say that "if only I could just do one more little..." would apply to any project I've ever worked on.  I have never walked away (or been torn away) from a project fully satisfied.

Can't wait to "explore" the set... only a few more weeks to go.

Controversial question..... were you ever asked, or ever been interested in going through the archives of the 2 AVP films Charlie? I'm sure there is quite a bit of extra material threre, and even though they are not particuarly popular, I wouldn't mind seeing expanded releases of these.

I hope you're not overly dissatisfied because a lot of what didn't make it into the set that you tried to include is finally here. The "Wreckage and Rage" documentary in it's uncut (Plus extra!) form, the isolated score to Alien and all the other movies and the Burke Cocoon sequence. I'm dying to find out how James Cameron let you get away with putting that on the set. Cause as you stated in the digital bits book "I tried!".

I'm just worried if you deem me worthy of this set.

Hi

It was from a Fox event that was held last year.

I could always scan the article for you.

Just bought and read the article... seems like they cobbled together snippets Charlie said at that Fox event, the DigitalBits book, this year's ComicCon panel and even coments made here! Still, it's an interesting insight into the behind the scenes of the set. Can't wait to see the Alien3 menus.... smiley_wink.gif

As we know, the Alien3 Special Edition had a new mix, including bringing back certain actors to re-loop their dialogue, and in the magazine Charlie mentions both Lance Henriksen and Charles Dance participating... but what about Sigourney Weaver? I'm pretty sure there's quite a few of her lines that needed fixing too. It's a real shame she couldn't do the commentaries for all 4 films... I think that would have rounded the set off nicely.

Have no fear.  Sigourney returned to loop her lines too.  I conducted her session by phone while she was in New York and I was in Detroit prepping "Crave."  It was a lot of fun.  The new "Alien 3" SE mix is a massive improvement.  In my opinion, of course.

And to clarify, we didn't actually record her ADR off the phone.  I merely monitored her performance and talked with her by phone.  Her lines were recorded in a proper studio in New York and sent back to L.A. to be mixed at Fox.

I must admit, I was quite disappointed that the article was mostly cobbled together from various quotes Charles has made over the years.  As Daz says, I was quite surprised they had quoted, word-for-word, parts of Charles' posts from this very forum and the DigitalBits book. Cheeky devils.

Speaking of the DigitalBits, whatever happened to their inside look at the making of the Anthology?  Seems to have disappeared off the radar.

Great news Charlie, you always deliver! Was it just those 3 that did the re-recordings? Off the top of my head, those were the actors that were required. Is is the same video cut from 2003?

Just out of interest, what were the actors reactions when asked to work on the film nearly 20 years after the fact? Fantastic effort on everyone's behalf though.

Jim C... I asked Bill Hunt about that a week ago, and he reassured me it's definitely on it's way! I'm really looking forward to it too.

Cheers for the info Daz - great stuff

Too bad you couldn't reinsert Charles Dance into the second half of Alien 3! tongue.gif

Can't wait! I'm even flying down to Florida the last weekend of this month just so I can revel in this set with a film school friend of mine who lives there (I moved up here six months ago).

I'm sure we'll find out soon but did you manage to interview anyone (cast or crew) who you missed the first time around?

I've heard that James Cameron fixed a couple of visual goofs on Aliens for the blu, notably the hole in which Bishop's body is in when he catches Newt.

I highly doubt it. Screen captures for the film have been pouring through from no doubt the BluRays themselves and if anyone were to spot those mistakes, they'd certainly make note of it.

If it was the case, well, that would be interesting. Where did you hear about this?

Charlie is there any reason Alien Res. and Alien 3 did not get new transfers? was it purely a cost concern?

Alien Res. would have looked great with a new digital ENR transfer, the colour would have been correct for one!

Indeed the Bishop hole goof is now fixed. I like this. Check it out EDIT in the post below.

Rightly or wrongly, Norton Security identified 4 computer threats on that web page.

DVDVision is the man. I wonder what else has been fixed? I know the Bishop hole has been a stickler for Cameron for years.

Yeah I was wondering what happened as well.

Very good news indeed

Fox had another hypersleep chamber set up at the New York Comic-Con but I didn't get to try it out - there was a constantly long line throughout the day and I didn't feel like waiting 30 minutes! I did get to see the egg package up close - it's smaller in person. They were also promoting Dollhouse, Avatar: Extended Edition, Predators, the next Family Guy Star Wars parody, and MGM's RoboCop set (which I would've picked up in a heartbeat if they remastered the first film and included the extras).

The Warner Archive people were also there and I got my hands on a free copy of Gene Roddenberry's Genesis II for proving myself a fan.

Charles Dance FTW! smiley_wink.gif

Did you get to see Adrien Brody there? Apparently he was due to sign Predators merch.

No I didn't, though I was thumbing through some Flickr photos earlier (not mine; other folks' photos) and I saw a pic of Brody. My first thought was, "He was here??"

And as a fan of Alien 3 (the assembly cut, anyway), it was nice to have taken the photo while they showed that clip. They showed three-minute clips of all four films and in between, they showed two different promos for the boxset itself - nothing new, just the same footage we've seen online.

As for Charles Dance, when are we gonna get a special edition of Last Action Hero?

Charles Fucking Dance.

Awesome pic, dude.

Home Cinema Choice has a review of the set.  They didn't get to review the 6th disc though.

Just going back to what someone said about Alien possibly being geometrically "squished" in picture.... judging by this comparison site, it's hard to tell which version is "correct" here. The D-Theatre has more picture to the left and right side, but the new Blu-ray has more image at the top and bottom!

Any clarification Charlie?

I wouldn't put any opinion on frame comparisons, typically, two different masters dont match pixel to pixel regarding the frame. One have to assume the poster just "fitted" one frame into the other one for them both to display, thus resulting in change of geometry on one of them. It's hard to miss the correct ratio on a HD transfert, as long as competent people (plus the director) are behind the wheel.

Hi - I registered specifically to ask this question.

Forgive me if this has been covered before, I went back through the thread but didn't see it, but does anyone know what the aspect ratio of the documentaries on "Disc 5" is supposed to be? My local Best Buy broke street date and I picked it up two days ago, and its fantastic, but I got to the documentaries today and they all appear to be slightly horizontally squeezed into a 4:3 frame. I think they were that way on the old Quadrilogy set, but I can't really remember and I don't have those discs anymore to check. Everyone just looks slightly taller and thinner than they should be.

Am I insane, or is the aspect ratio of the documentaries actually 4:3?

EDIT: I should clarify that I know that it isn't the settings on my TV or Blu-ray player, as everything else in the set plays absolutely normally. Even the menus on those discs appear normal. Its literally just the documentaries themselves.

I watched a bunch of those yesterday night, and they are now reframed in 1.77. You should switch on the 16/9 option on your TV to see them correctly I guess.

Do anyone know where the James Remar as Hicks bonus have gone ? It seems to have vanished from the set.

The set produces scaling errors on certain Bluray players, most signifcantly the Oppo Blu-Ray player.  I'm guessing that's what is causing it to be squished.  I guess you have to wait for firmware updates to be produced or something.
