Hooking TV to computer

I'm wanting to hook my TV up as a monitor to my computer and I thought I'd ask the experts before I get started to see if my plan will work.

I am sick and tired of commercials and had the thought of running a VGA cable from my computer to my TV (LG 26LG30-UD) and watching shows on hulu or some other such site. (I know they still have commercials, but I've read that there aren't as many)

Here are my questions:
1. Is there a recommendation for cable? It has to be D-Sub 15 pin and I found what appears to be the right type made by Tripp Lite. There appears to be a wide price range and a lot of manufacturers. This one is only about $15.

2. Is there a limit to the length of cable I can use? I can stretch it across the room each time I want to watch TV from the internet and use a 10' cable or I can pull it up through a wall and across the ceiling and down through the other wall with a 30' cable.

3. If I can't find a 30' cable, can I use two 15' cables and hook them together with a female/female connection? (like a pass thru...)

4. I will have to pull an audio wire too. Will the vido and audio be out of synch at the distance of 30'?

Thanks in advance,
Brad

Re: Hooking TV to computer

It is hard to answer all your questions because I don't know the layout of your home. In my case I used a 6' VGA cable, purchased at OfficeMax, to hook-up my desktop computer to my LCD along with an audio cable. I then used HDMI to hook-up DirecTV. Everything works perfect.

The length of a cable can reduce the video signal and it is always advisable to keep the it no longer than needed. If possible, I would try to keep the distance less than 15' and not try to couple two cables together.

i am wondering about the same thing as well. I wanted to know if it is better to use a dvi to hdmi converter or the "pc plug" on the tv? my vid card has dual dvi out.

Re: Hooking TV to computer

The room I'm wanting to do this in has the computer on one side and the TV on the other and it won't work to put them both on the same side of the room. It's not a big room though so a 30' cable will reach by going up thru the wall on one side, across in the attic and down thru the wall on the other.

If this cable would be too long, I may just wait and get a dish.

Re: Hooking TV to computer

easiest way to access a computer on a tv is if you have xbox or PS3 and a wireless router and NAS (networked attached storage). I can put stuff on my hard drives and access on tv through PS3 next way is to run a wire and treat as dual display. Good thing about PS3 is lack of wires from computer to TV.

Re: Hooking TV to computer

would really like to know about the connect situation i mentioned above. I get the tv tomorrow and need to know if dvi to hdmi is better than dvi to pc plug.

thanks
