If the team had stacked the wood properly the first time, they would not have lost an hour or so and thus would not have come in last, even with the U-Turn.

I think I need to rephrase: It's poor planning to reveal the first blind U-Turn on an elimination leg.

What do you mean? If it's a non-elimination leg, the U-Turn doesn't matter nearly as much.

Re: The Amazing Race season 14

Well, that's a first. I never expected Phil to appear on this show without a shirt. It's funny how he can do that so deadpan.

With Mike White on this season, I wonder if a celebrity race is in the works. That could be interesting. Of course, it would all depend on the availability of Rob and Amber.

Re: The Amazing Race season 14

Speaking of without shirts, did the preview for this week not show the flight attendant running unblurred? I suppose I should have expected as much given that this is a prime time network show but I could have sworn the preview showed otherwise. Or maybe it was just wishful thinking on my part. =)

It was blurred in the previews, as well.

I really wanted Jaime to do that last task.

Hey, the people that actually got U-Turned agree with me:

Exclusive: Amanda Blackledge and Kris Klicka talk 'The Amazing Race' - Reality TV World - News, information, episode summaries, message boards, chat and games for unscripted television programs

Quote:
Reality TV World: You both seemed pretty certain that, save for a non-elimination leg, you were going home, is that accurate?

Amanda: Yeah, well we knew we were the last [team] left in the village, we knew we were in last place when we were finishing that wood stack pile. However we were hoping and praying that it was a non-elimination. We did not know if it was or not, and to be honest we really kinda thought it was going to be a non-elimination leg just because there had already been a few episodes and they hadn't had one yet. So we kinda thought they were due.

Plus with the U-Turn, we figured it would make sense for them to do a non-elimination with that kind of thing thrown into the game. So that's why when we came in and talk to [The Amazing Race host Phil Keoghan] we expected to be last but we were kinda still waiting for him to say "You're eliminated" until we believed it because we thought it was gonna be a non-elimination.

Re: The Amazing Race season 14

Their thinking is flawed- a U-Turn on a non-elimination leg makes little sense.

If they were good racers, they would treat every leg as an elimination leg.

Only one season has included a NEL within the first four episodes (season 6--although season 9 included an early "To Be Continued" leg).

Re: The Amazing Race season 14

I was very nervous watching Mel do that challenge, that could have been bad.

Did you see what one of challenges is for next week?...

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
They will allow an elephant to walk over them! Um, isn't that a tad too dangerous even for this show? Not to mention the tiger.

Tammy and Victor, while I still like them, dropped a notch or two on my respectability meter, they should have had more respect while driving through that poverty stricken area instead of giggling like they were at Disney land.

Sucks, I didn't see any of this show. I had a full 60 minutes of "60 minutes"

Tammy seems okay. Victor seems to be a class-A jerk. And an annoying one, to boot.

That challenge is one I would definitely take a pass on. They do plenty of risky things on this show that look fun and have lots of safety backups (although I'm surprised we've never seen a major car wreck) but that is a challenge I'd refuse to do. Tiny litle slip and you could be dead.

Re: The Amazing Race season 14

Noooo, not Mel and Mike! At least they got the coolest tiger picture, it's mouth was open.

As hot as Jaime and Kara are they should just, I don't know, stay away from other people lol. They are the most intolerant people that i've ever seen. They may be hot but the behaviour they display on the show is a huge turn off for me.

I might quote George Costanza in regards to them..."Ya know we're living in a SOCIETY!!"

My heart broke hearing Luke saying "Mom! No, mom!" when she collapsed.

Lastly, the girl waiting with Phil to greet the racers at the pitstop was yummy!

Re: The Amazing Race season 14

Ladies and gentlemen, the role of the ugly American tourists will now be played by Jamie and Kara!

Too bad for Mel and Mike. They got royally hosed by their first cab driver in Phuket. Mel should have realized that if you see every other team take off in a completely different direction than you, chances are you're the one going the wrong way.

I had to laugh at the two short guys. Shouldn't have messed with the props. If they left the tire pumps alone, they would still have come in first even with the 30 minute penalty for hiring the taxi to guide them.

Re: The Amazing Race season 14

Christy last season, Jaime this season...I really know how to pick 'em, eh?

Mel and Mike were my favorites though--really bummed to see them go.

You mean the "Tweedles"? I believe that Jamie and Kara have dubbed them so. After their performance maybe Tweedle dumb and Tweedle dumber? I smelled trouble when he started putting the pumps away. And not reading the clue? Shouldn't happen this far into the race. They would have had an hour lead except for the dumbness.

Jamie and Kara are defineitely hard to listen to.

Re: The Amazing Race season 14

Was quite relieved at the outcome of the last show.

I am consistently stunned by how reasonable Mark & Michael continue to be. They don't blame others for their mistakes (and they've made some beauts in recent weeks). They don't bitch at each other too much (a little bit this week about going back after their bags). They continue--in the face of adversity--to put their best foot forward and remain optimistic and have fun. How refreshing!

We were wondering at my house if Phil would have been able to check them in without their backpacks. Unlike Kisha & Jen, Mark & Mike had their travel papers with them--just not their backpacks with clothes, etc. Could they have checked in and then gone off to rescue their stuff? Or, would they have had to forfeit the contents of the backpacks once they reached the pitstop?

It's just that so many teams would have been at each others throats after some of the mistakes those two fellas have made--along with the penalties they have received along the way. They just don't seem to think that way.

================================

Funny moment of the week -- Tammy: "Oh! It's the Mai Tai Trannies!"

2nds most funny moment -- Mark & Michael never catching on that they were men.

The official title of the episode: Of Teeth and Trannies.

Yeah, it's so refreshing to see which rules they will break this time.

They have to be the most-penalized team ever.

I guess you missed the parts where they were arguing with each other about whether it made sense to go get the backpacks before going to the pit stop.

Disagree all you want, Chris. But don't get snarky about how I "must've missed something" and edit my quote which had actually made it clear that I was very much aware of the disagreement and had qualified my remarks. C'mon.

It HAS been determined (by those people who keep track of these things) that they are, indeed, the most-penalized team-ever in the history of TAR. I don't deny that. I'm just celebrating that they aren't disagreeable personalities who snipe and carp every time something doesn't go their way. They accept responsibility for their actions and enjoy the race.

They have received penalties for hiding the air pumps from the other racers, having the taxi driver lead them during the rickshaw challenge, and selling personal property to pay for the extra taxi ride needed to get their backpacks. It hasn't been clear to me if they knew they were breaking the rules on any of the three occasions, but at least they haven't made excuses to explain their behavior (that we've seen). I know that as a viewer I was not sure any of those actions would cause them to incur penalties...but I would think the players would have a much better idea of what they can/can't do on the race.

Here is what Victoria (Brad and Victoria) had to say on another forum:

Quote:
The rules were made very clear to us. I honestly was shocked to see them break that many rules.

A) You can not barter with items you take with you at the start of the race (but you can barter with any new items you obtain after the start of the race).

B) You can not follow someone in a vehicle. You can have someone physically ride with you in a cab, for example, to show you the way, but you can't have them drive and you follow behind.

The penalties vary based on the nature of the crime.

Re: The Amazing Race season 14

When the 2 cheerleaders named Mark and Michael the Tweedles, it has too be the one of the most spot on nicknames I have heard.

I still can't believe that 2 groups actually thought they were going to go back at the docking point to retrieve their bags as part of the race. Has this show ever gone backwards at any stage of the race?

Re: The Amazing Race season 14

I love finding out those types of rules. I often wish the producers/editors made those things more clear. You'd think they'd feel the need to explain those sorts of things when they pop up.

In the case of Rule B, viewers have seen contestants in the race in prior seasons do that any number of times without penalty, haven't we? Maybe I'm mistaken.

So while the racers may have been briefed, I feel that it would be nice for us viewers to know, at least, that what we're seeing unfold is a conscious decision to break the rules and that there will be consequences later on. But, again, maybe I'm just not picking up on some clues that are laid out during the telecast.
