Receiver + HTiB Speakers

Okay, so i have a HTiB. Through this forum i've been realizing that i obviously need to upgrade, and i've found a couple receivers that would do the job well. Anyway, here's my problem. I'm wondering if i could upgrade my receiver and keep my HTiB speakers temporarily. Right now i just need a receiver that i can use my Creston system to control, and one that switches video, not so much that i need anything to sound better. I'm just wondering if there's any way it would sound worse if i didn't upgrade my speakers at the same time?

Re: Receiver + HTiB Speakers

What brand htib do you have? Some come with proprietary wiring that would make hookup a challenge if not impossible. Also, many come with speakers that are 4 ohm, or even 3 and 2 ohm. Not sure what would happen if you powered them with an 8 ohm receiver.

Re: Receiver + HTiB Speakers

it's an old Philips one. cheapest HTiB out there. But surprisingly enough it has quite a bit of power and sounds decent. The wiring would work on a regular receiver but i must check about the ohms. thanks for the help!

A lot of receivers allow you to select impedence between 4 and 8 ohms. Most that do have a switch on the back near the AC in and voltage selector.

But will it even be worth it for the sound quality or do i simply need to spring for new speakers and receiver at the same time?

Re: Receiver + HTiB Speakers

When I upgraded from my Sony HTiB setup, to my Yamaha receiver, I noticed a huge difference in the volume of special effect and huge separation in the speakers. It actually SOUNDED like surround sound.

Then when I finished building my new speakers, I was absolutely blown away. So yeah, getting just the receiver (depending on the quality between your old and new) will make a difference, at least that's the route I took. I'm glad I took my time and bought a receiver to work well with my planned speakers. Turned out great!

Good luck,
Chad

Alright sweet it looks like i'm going to upgrade the receiver first and then i'll go with the speakers. Thanks everyone!

Re: Receiver + HTiB Speakers

If you are on a budget then you made the right decision to upgrade your receiver now and save for your speaker upgrade in the future. Just keep in mind that you want to make sure that the receiver you purchase today will be able to handle the speakers that you plan to purchase in the future.
