*** Official CORALINE Review Thread

Made a special day of it yesterday and took a friend to see Coraline.
You really must see this stop motion animation film and you MUST see it in 3D!
I had read numerous reviews before hand and was aware of changes from the book. I think all those aspects are truly beside the point that this is a feast for the eyes and that much of the tale is wonderfully subversive.
There were many things in the film that went right over my head, and many that did not. The tequila we were drinking may have had a part in this.
I felt sure that an early view of a house was a direct nod to The Brave Little Toaster.
As has been mentioned often, this would be too much scary for the youngest children.
There were no children in my matinee viewing, how lucky could I get?
As much as I enjoyed this experience, I was sadly aware that any viewings at home were not going to compare due to the loss of the 3D magic.
I'll just have to settle for another trip or two to the theater.

I can't say that I've seen any 3D since the very early 50s. This is miles beyond that technology. The glasses were not even of the green/red variety so it is new science for me.

Re: *** Official CORALINE Review Thread

This was by far the best 3D viewing experience I've ever had. Forget Polar Express, and other recent attempts at 3D. This is the first time where it wasn't blurry!! Usually, the action pops up and it gets all blurry and frustrating--but this was a pure visual delight.
Although it's a little slow, and not completely satisfying, it could probably stand for multiple viewings. Having said that, it's also very imaginative, beautiful, with a better than average story. It's great to see some imagination again--something which I've seen too little of lately.
Also, I thought this was a Tim Burton directed movie, but it's not--which is a good thing. I've always thought he should be limited to the visual art department, and maybe toss in a couple of original ideas here and there for the story.
I agree with Henry that this is a must see and YOU MUST WATCH THIS IN 3D!!! This has to be seen in the theater, as the effect will be lost at home. And don't forget to stay through the end credits!

I wear glasses and can't also wear the 3D glasses. No 3D for me.

Having said that, though: The movie was imaginative enough that I could enjoy it immensely. I felt like a kid and enjoyed every second of it.

Re: *** Official CORALINE Review Thread

I went and saw this the other day, and had a great time. It took the theater about 20 minutes to get it going (they were having some technical difficulty.) What I enjoyed most was that the movie was 3D without being "amusement park" 3D - constantly throwing things at you and trying to make you jump. It was well done, and should be enjoyed in 3D if you can. There were a few children there, and one was quoted as saying, "Daddy, this keeps getting scarier and scarier. I don't think I like this!"

Was pretty good. Definately tons of imagination and visual spledor. But yeah it does seem to get scary at parts for a young child. This 3-D resurgence really does seem to be the future of movie going, because between this and My Bloody Valentine they're getting my money.

Re: *** Official CORALINE Review Thread

Coraline is a marvelous film. It is one of those rare experiences where I am captivated from start to finish in a beautiful, fanciful, intriguing world. The 3D only enhances it. It adds depth, visual and cinematic, and is only showy for the sake of 3D showiness once or twice. I'm now hooked on 3D animated movies and will seek them out.

It is also a strange, trippy movie with frightening -- Gene Wilder's "Willy Wonka" frightening -- imagery. It's a paced movie, more sophisticated than a typical "kids" movie, and perhaps not suitable for the younger grade school set.

But for an adult, such a wonderful escape, with incredible animation, haunting music, and captivating story.

Very special film. Enjoyed it in 3-D with my wife and 5 year old son. I wear glasses, and I hate wearing two pairs, but it was very worth it.

The visuals here are spectacular, and the quirky sense of humor and character is a treat. Bummed it won't be the same at home, but it's a day one purchase.

There were certainly some scary moments (for son and wife), but there were also moments of incredible wonder.

Loved it. Great experience.

Re: *** Official CORALINE Review Thread

I found it to be a nice, quirky little fantasy film, but I was somewhat underwhelmed by the 3D. I don't recall a single "project into the audience" moment. Everything was behind the plane of the screen. Oftentimes, I was barely aware that I was watching 3D, and I didn't see anything that made me think superior 3D technology was being used.

My wife and I just saw this Sunday and we loved it. Wonderful stop motion animation and the 3D is excellent. The sophistication of the animation was just amazing. I hope Ray Harryhausen sees it. He can say he helped get to that point.

As for the closing credits, we didn't stay for all of them. We did see some of the characters in the credits, but nothing special. Does something big happen in the closing credits?

I also agree very small children would be frightened by this movie. And the nudity might not be appropriate for all ages.

Re: *** Official CORALINE Review Thread

Just saw it today. And I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The 3D was fun but even this movie hasn't sold me on the 3D concept. I would agree that it's not targeted toward small children but their was still a lot of them at the theater. I'd say it's fine for ages 5 and up. Also, I loved the fact that it took place in Oregon.
